You never know what you a sattelite photo will show

While scanning the Outer Banks of North Carolina, using Google Earth, I found two interesting objects.

This will give you something to do!

-75.495969,35.738305
-75.488737,35.737420

2 needles in a haystack - I mean ocean.

Edit:
I put the l/l like Garmin POI. For Google Earth it's really:

35.738305,-75.495969
35.737420,-75.488737

Sorry about that.

Looks like it is headed to DFW. Curious what the coloring is. I am not in 3D mode.

Reflection of sunlight off

Reflection of sunlight off the aluminum shell of the plane. The satellite's lenses are apparently sensitive enough to capture the light spectrum from the reflection.

Sats don't use color sensors. They have a monochrome sensor that is exposed through several filters (typically RGB) sequentially. These images are later combined into a color image. This works fine if the object you are imaging is stationary (the ground) or moving slowly. However, if the object is moving quickly with respect to the "reference frame" of the image (like the airplane in the image above), the different color images are slightly de-registered, hence the color spectrum along the direction of travel of the object.

Note that a newer image has replaced the image above. To see the plane at this location now, you need to go into Google Earth, click on the "Display Historical Imagery" button, and go back one (as of 11/17/11) image in time.

No you can't paste or upload a photo to POI-Factory however you can upload the photo to a hosting site like photobucket.com and paste the link to the photo here as I did with this link http://bit.ly/ngjhr2

The collection of bizarre stuff in that house is hard to believe. Their photo gallery:

No, I don't think it is

I checked on my GPS to see if this comes up as one of the Offbeat Attractions, but I don't see it listed on there. You really can't tell it's a frog unless you see it from above. Here is a link to the local news coverage of the story, if anyone is interested. http://www.wwnytv.com/news/local/Must-See-The-Frog-Pond-That...

Interesting find

I was browsing a recent National Geographic magazine and was fascinated to find a picture of a huge concrete "arrow" embedded in the ground at various intervals back in the 1920s. This was the era of transcontinental air flights way before radar and air traffic control.

I googled concrete arrows and sure enough there are still come around. The pilots would use the arrows to stay on the path across the country! Whatever works, huh grin

Here are the google earth coordinates for one near Zion National park:

37.395884,-113.257308

You have to zoom in a bit to see the arrow

What...?

Checked out both but was unable to see what was so exciting.

The first set of numbers showed waves crashing on the shore... and the second showed the ocean a few hundred yards off shore.

I can see the ocean and seashore in person just by walking out my door and driving a few minutes from home.

A few years ago, a commercial jet was over a neighbor's house while on approach to O'Hare, but updated satellite images have shown it's no longer there. I suppose it finally landed.

On the previous update to the satellite views for Long Island, I saw my car parked at the office and at my sisters a few miles away. Apparently in the time between when they took the shot over my office and the shot over my sisters house I had driven to her location.

If you're talking about the very first post I thought the same thing, then I realized the first post was in March of 2009 and surely the satellite image at those coordinates has changed since then.

Reading some of the comments from back then I'm guessing a few birds in flight were caught by the camera.

On the bottom left under the scale there is a small clock with an green arrow with 1993 beside it. Click on 1993 and a slide scale will show up on the top left. Move the slide until you get to 7 2006.

Fighter jets common here

Yeah, here on the Outer Banks, military jets particularly patrolling the coast and conducting training missions from the Norfolk Virginia area, are a much more common sight (and sound) than commercial jets.

/and if you're reading this thread, searching the coordinates on Google Earth in the original post, and not seeing what the discussion is all about, first, if you haven't already, reverse the two coordinates to 35.737420,-75.488737 to see the Outer Banks and then zoom in, and second, slide the time slider to 7/2006 (because the more current Google Earth image doesn't show the fighter jet).

Also, I looked to see if Google maps ever made a drive down Duke of Gloucester (commonly known as DOG street).

Old Images

I did a search for neighborhood where I used to live, and saw my old car parked in the driveway. The satellite images must be from at least 3 years ago.
