260w Custom POI Question

I am new to the GPS world, so sorry for being such a newb. I have read a lot of discussions around the custom POI topic. I have been able to get some custom POIs to work on my 260w, in that I have received the "ding" and "pop up", telling me there is a Starbucks about 300 ft away, and only on the route/street I am on (saw it before the GPS). I have downloaded .csv file for the locations, the .bmp file for the icon and .wav file for a voice, telling me I am approaching a Starbucks. I have set up the files in the the following way in order to try and give me a "proximity bubble" ,so, while we are taking trips we can try and locate stuff off freeways, etc:

Starbucks Tourguide.csv
Starbucks Tourguide.bmp
Starbucks Tourguide.sox.exe (wave file)

(could it be I should not have a space between Starbucks and Tourguide?)

Evidently my "proximity bubble" isn't working, even though I loaded the .csv file manually with POI loader and set the proximity to 2 miles (10,560 ft.)

So, can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Don't necessarily care about the icon, or even the voice, but would really like to get the "ding" and "pop up" when I am traveling down the freeway and need a SB fix.

Know this topic is beat to death, but would appreciate and insight and help anyone has.

Thanks

Your voice filename is suspect

If you have a recent 260W, then all you need to provide is something called Starbucks Tourguide.wav (get rid of the sox.exe part - it is not relavent if you have the same 260W I have ....)

Go to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php to produce a .wav file and name it the exact same thing as your .csv and.bmp filenames for Starbucks Tourguide but with the .wav extension.

The sox.exe should not apply to your 260W - the link I included above produces the exact format the Garmin needs for audio.

Radius Proximity for 260w

Thanks very much, I will do just that. Any suggestion on getting my proximity set, so I can see Starbucks that are not on the road I am on? Would like to be able to see them, at least at a mile radius (full 360).

Thanks again

Some suggestions

The SOX.EXE file need only be resident in the same folder as the POILoader.exe file. While the tourguide bubble may be nice, it isn't always needed. If you are traveling, a normal CSV can be set to alert and it is searchable. I normally only set alerts for my route of travel and then only for a select few items. Driving around and having the unit tell me everytime I pass (or get near) a POI is distracting and can cause me to miss a more important alert such as a camera.

As far as the Starbucks example, try just Starbucks.CSV, Starbucks.BMP, and Starbucks.WAV with the SOX.EXE file in the POILoader folder. It should work just fine. You can manually set a distance running POILoader in manual mode.

POI for 255W

Can I do the same thing with my 255W? I renamed the sound file like the csv and the bmp files but with an wav extension.
I downloaded everything in to the GPS and see the icon but there is no sound when I use the simulator.
Thanks for any help.

Did you put the sox.exe in the same directory as the poiloader? You would need that for the 255w. I have a 255w and it works great with TourGuide files.

You will have to play with the distance. I would recommend you start with 1200 feet and adjust from there. Don't make rest stops TourGuide, they are supposed to use the entry and it shouldn't be needed. I am getting ready for a short road trip and I will test it out.

From your statement, it almost sounds like you took a working mp3 file and just renamed it with a wav extension (rename Starbucks.mp3 to Starbucks.wav). If that's what you did, that won't work. You have to use a converter program (Google convert mp3 wav to find programs, some free) to actually convert the audio format.

Here is a good discussion topic:

Finnicky finnicky, too.

Also, it has to be TourGuide, not Tourguide. The G has to be capitalized otherwise it isn't recognized. No space allowed between Tour and Guide, no underscore to link them, i.e. not Tour_Guide.
TourGuide is the only way it'll work.
