Where did it go?

Hello, all you people who know what you're doing. We bought the 880 a few months ago (turns our we adopted an orphan, but that's the way it goes.) Up until a week ago, the nice lady would tell us the name of the street we were to turn on. Now that has changed and she just says things like turn left in 300 feet. I'm sure it's just that I'm too dumb to know where to look, so can anybody tell me how to put it back like it was? My wife needs to hear it out loud; if we rely on her looking at the screen for the name of the street we won't have the car for long. Thanks!

Voice

Sounds like you changed the voice from a TTS voice to a standard one. You need to go in to your settings and chose a voice that is TTS. In the older nuvis it's click on the wrench, then Locale, then click on the lips, then choose a voice, Look for TTS after the name

where did it go

Try looking in tools-settings-language the voice should read american english jill (tts) not just american english if not click on voice and change to (tts)
Hope this works for you

Speechless

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of months ago on my 750. Sure don't remember changing from Jack to simple American English (non-TTS), but that's what was selected. Once I picked Jack, the street names were announced with the turns once again.

Then just this past weekend, my nüvi went silent, no announcements at all and Jack was still selected and pushing the volume up and muting and unmuting made no difference... I tried Jill but it sounded like someone was talking in a barrel of water where the sound only came out in the bubbles. I then reselected Jack and all is back to normal. And Jill is just fine also.

I've learned to expect anything weird from technology. Remember the HAL 9000?

This works!

Thanks, folks, I think that's got it. I guess my only other question is why I had to go to a non-Garmin site to get this help. Some things are technology, some things are poor customer service.

The answer to your problem was also available on the Garmin FAQ support website (See Below for the exact answer that I received when I input "tts voice" in the search inquiry input):

"Question: My nuvi is supposed to speak street names when giving voice prompts but it doesn't. How can I fix this?

Answer:
All of the Garmin automotive GPS units that speak street names are also loaded with basic voice prompts (i.e. 'Turn Right in 500 feet') as well as 'text-to-speech' voices that speak street names. If one of the basic types of voice prompts has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names.

In order to change this setting on the nüvi line of products, please follow these steps:

1. In the Main Menu, tap on the Settings icon.

2. Tap on "Locale"

3. The second line on this screen has a picture of a mouth. To the right, the current voice for the GPS device is listed. Tap it to change the voice.

4. Select a voice that is labeled with (TTS) at the end. These voices will speak street names.

5. Select "OK". The voice has now been changed.

The device should now speak street names.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Poor Garmin service

I had the same problem with the TTS voice about a month ago and Garmin walked me through the change in about 5 minutes. I thought it was great customer service.

My Uncle told me how happy

My Uncle told me how happy he was getting that answer online from the Garmin site after doing a recent update. Happy because he didn't have to bother me! Sometimes the answers are indeed there....

Never mind Jack or Jill--I think you will really be pleased with Australian Karen.

I'll give her a listen
