I think I ruined my NUVI 350

Just got back from a two week cruise. While on the cruise I liked to check the ship's location with my NUVI 350.

On the second day out I accidentally dropped the NUVI on the deck. When I first tried to turn it on all I got was a white screen.

After repeated on/off cycles, it finally booted up but the screen looks horrible. Kinda like an old TV with rabbit ears. Lot's of smears / ghosts / badly formed (unreadable) text.

Any Ideas?

Any hope to fix it?

Sounds like the LCD is toast

Not much you can do with a toasted LCD but replace it - and repairing the 350 would not be cost effective with some of the prices out there now for 750s - it would be good to upgrade.

Thanks

You confirmed my worst fears.

When I take a screenshot and view it on my computer it looks perfect!

I guess all the LCD pixils got scrambled when I dropped it.

Call customer support

I'd suggest you call customer support, and be extremely nice. Explain that the screen started acting weird, and what happened. One of three things will happen. They will either fix it under warranty (actually replace it with a refurbished unit), discount the repairs (up to 75% discount) or tell you that you are jammed and nothing can be done except to pay the whole repair price.

I do caution you to be EXTREMELY nice when you call, you will catch more flies with honey than vinegar. If you don't get the answer you want, politely advise them you'll consider it, and call back. Often times the reps have a lot of leeway, or they used to prior to the layoff, and we could do what we felt was right. Many times reps would fix things outside of warranty, or replace units that should not be covered.

The worst that could happen is that they will say no, and they have lost their ability to wheel and deal, but I can not emphasize enough, BE VERY POLITE AND NICE...

Good Advice

On Vacation

If I was on a 2 week cruise, the last thing I want to know is "Where am I". lol

Hope you could get it fixed by Garmin.

Ruined it

I did the same thing with a smart phone except I sat on it. The screen had this weird black spot on it they grew by the day. I went to a Att repair shop and asked VERY nice if they could do anything. The tech knew it was from a drop or impact but they still replaced it.. no charge!

Pays to ask nice!

Jim This doesn't sound like

Jim
This doesn't sound like a classic LCD failure, more like a lose ribbon cable due to the fall. I have run across this a few times in the past. Also you might want if you haven't already push the reset under the flip up.

You will need plastic pry tools to open the unit to even see if that is the problem to start with.

How does "reset" differ from "restore factory defaults"?

And to JACKJ what's with the name calling?
Are you 12?

According to the manual, "Reset" deletes all user data. Any other "negatives" you know about?

Lets try this first!

1) open the GPSr antenna
2) press the bottom left screen while holding the power button to turn the unit on
3) enter maintenace mode
4) select diagnostics
5) run LCD diagnostics
6) clear error report, "NOT User Data"
7) restart GPSr

Are these instructions valid for NUVI 350?

I got as far as 2) then got a "pre boot message" and then a "booting" message but never got to the "maintenance" mode.....

I had that happen to my gf's

I had that happen to my gf's Nuvi 350...she tossed it into the backseat one night when she was pissed off...the screen went corrupt and had a 'S' line through it.

Called Garmin and they told me to send it in since it was still under warrenty...a week later I got a 'overhauled' unit.
