Well, I guess it's time I start an official thread about Extra_POI_Editor at POI Factory.
It does too many things for me to explain in a short post, so let's say it will allow you to view, edit and convert (new!) any GPX/CSV/OV2/JPG/KML/MGLN POI file to GPX/CSV/OV2/KML. Yes! Geocoded JPG can be imported too!
* There are preview windows specially designed to simulate a 4.3" widescreen GPS like a nuvi 760, but the program will work for other GPS; the display in the program will not match exactly the non-widescreen GPS.
* The tool will allow you to see the POIs on a map. You can drag also the marker on the map and update the new coordinate. This is very cool to fine tune the POI location.
* You can also preview linked images and sound files used in TourGuides.
* EPE can do batch geocoding and reverse geocoding. It has special filters to extract State, Postcode, Phone and more. You can create custom column formats for your CSV files input and output, ...
* You can open POI Loader, MapSource or GoogleEarth directly from EPE to see all POIs on the map.
This is it for now. It does more than that and will probably do more later. Please post your comments and suggestions here.
Oh yeah! For those who do not know, the download link is here:
If you find something missing, just post your requests. I will see what I can do.
Yes, that was the problem - the missing "
Funny thing is that POI Loader has never complained about it. I fixed the missing " and it now opens quite nicely.
Thanks for an amazing program. Your programing skills are greatly appreciated by the GPS community.
I just signed on to try to catch up on everything that is happening at POI-Factory. I have been working many hours on compiling Shell Service Stations. The original file was poor at best. I have basically completed Alaska, Alabama and most of Florida. Holy cow, what a time consuming job. I have been using Shell Station search and Google Earth. I have many listings that I can't locate. I am always looking for easier ways to do things, so I read this thread with great interest. I just downloaded the latest version and will try it out with my Garmin 750. Will let you know how it works with what I am doing after playing around with it for a while.
Not sure if I did something wrong, but I made a file and used the Symbol file (Scenic Area..Camera)and selected Symbol&Name and uploaded via POI Loader but when the POI appeared on the map (I chose 300') it was just a grey sphere (the rest worked, mp3 & proximity).
As far as I know, POI Loader actually ignores the Symbol specification from gpx files.
When I need to associate a specific icon to one particular entry I use the href reference and it works fine.
I need to check this.
BTW, i thought href link was to load pictures or MP3s, not symbols...
Ok didn't know that...
You can also do .bmp icons, or if you actually specify a folder name, then it can be a combination of jpg, bmp and/or mp3.
I geocoded some recent photos using GPicSync. When attempting to import these photos into Extra POI Editor, I get the follow message: "Runtime error '11': Division by zero".
Do you have any idea what is going on?
As an example, when using GPicSync, I didn't have a synchronized track, so I inserted the geocode for the location into the photo instead. When I look at the EFIX information on the photo (using Corel Paintshop Pro), it appears to be ok, with the exception that the longitude is preceded by a zero. (What shows up in EFIX data is Latitude: 43 48'06"; Longitude 011 12'03" - its the Florence, Italy airport). I did not include the zero when encoding the longitude.
Might it be the zero preceding the eleven?
By the way, thank you very much for your wonderful program.
Try to geocode in Picasa
When I try to run the software I get an error message. It asks if I want to continue to run the scripts. Error line 1 Ch 26. Do I need to install something else?
OK, for some reason geocoding in Picasa does permit me to import the photo. However recoding in Picasa from that picture originally coded with GPicSync does not correct the situiation.
Now, another anomoly has croped up. The location on the map shows it to be in the wrong quadrants of the earth. My location is approx N42° W71°. The map shows a location estimated to be S42° E71°. The location shown as text is correct. I'm in New Hampshire, USA and the map shows somewhere south of South Africa. Google Earth shows the proper location for the photo.
All of this is not intended to be a critism, just an observation. I was playing around with the capabilities of the program and would probably not be importing photos anyway. I do think the ExtraPOI Editor does a great job. Thank you.
Did the coordintes get swapped?
It sure looks that way. The two screen shots on the right clearly read N and W. Meanwile the map shows a location that is S and E.
When loading a POI file or GPX file everything is normal. North is north and west is west. The pointer shows the true location.
Just a couple of observations, they're not insuperable but might be worth looking at:
- when the edit screen is not maximized the scroll bar is there, but it doesn't scroll using a scroll wheel on my mouse (Logitech MX 1 Optical Wireless), the scroll wheel does seem to work with all my other programs.
- I have my taskbar permanently on top. When the edit screen is maximized the "Delete", "Cancel", "OK" buttons are hidden behind the taskbar, so I have to "Restore Down" the screen to be able to click them. Even then the default non-maximized size leaves the buttons partially obscured by the task bar.
Screen Res: 1024 x 768 WinXP SP2
Is it just me, or is this reproducible?
Thank you for all your comments. I appreciate all of them and I will try to handle them ASAP. I am not annoyed by bug reports or feature requests. Bring them on...
So far, there are issues with
1- Geocoded JPG with crash or coordinates invertion. Inversion is very easy to fix. The divide by zero cannot be fixed unless I have a link to the file causing it. I had a hard time to extract the lon/lat from a JPG. I will see what I can do.
2- Scrolling using the mouse. I will check. 1024x768 with partially obscured buttons: how big is your permanent task bar (nbr of lines)?
... and so on...
I am getting many requests for new features from everywhere too. Let me a couple of days to check everything. I will post back. Thanks.
Usual prompt service. Sure you're not telepathic?, you seem to answer as soon as the post button is hit!
- Number of lines in the taskbar for me = One
OK, I've uploaded 3 photos to Mediafire http://tinyurl.com/dlmbqd
All 3 come up ok in Picasa.
DCP_0805.jpg: Map shows wrong location. Coordinates are shown correctly.
Exterior01.jpg: Error message - Photo not geocoded
IMG_0230.jpg: Error message - Run-time error '11'
Perhaps if you look at the EXIF data you can see what I'm doing wrong.
One feature I would appreciate is a warning upon closing if data has not been saved. Another is when opening a file to have it remember the folder that contained the file last opened.
Can you check the link? I get a map only when clicking on it. How do I get the files?
I will try to analyze your files as soon as I can get them. Very hard to do by the way. Hopefully, it is not a major issue. Maybe a different Exif format...
Edit: I corrected the log/lat invertion and sign. It will be released in v2.98+ when I checked your files.
Turboccc, I am really getting into this piece of software, love the way it works!!
Here are a couple observations, which are by no means complaints!!!
- When I "Tab" from the city entry it goes down to Post code, not state.
- Is there a way to keep the zoom level and display choice from entry to entry with the map preview?
And this one may be important...
- When you close out the program without saving, it doesn't warn you or ask if you would like to save your changes.
No real big major deals, just though you would like to know.
Thanks again for creating this valuable tool!!
1- Tab thing. Already corrected in v2.98. Just wait for the release.
2- Zoom level in map. I do not know. This is bugging me too.
Would you accept to set a default zoom level in the Preferences? For example, you could set the zoom level to 10 and it will always revert to 10 instead of 15. It just depends if you want always the same zoom level. It may be better than letting me choose the default zoom level for you.
3- Save warning. You are not the first one to ask. I will try to find an easy (and lazy) way to do that.
Thanks in advance
v2.98 released. Sorry, I still have some of your requests to process.
- Better handle spaces in file path & name in command-line. Quotes must be used.
- Corrected a CSV field profile issue where fields assignment could be lost.
- Added progress bar in Find Duplicates when long processing is expected.
- Added the @speed info in POI Name when saving a CSV...
- Added KML file open and file merge (experimental)
- Added a warning when exiting the program and the current file is not saved.
- Improved phone detection again - more to come.
- Corrected (lon, lat) invertion when opening geocoded JPG.
- Corrected tab stop (once more!) in the POI Edit window.
Is there an open and closed treasure chest in the icon symbols? The current symbol is an airplane. Very cool program!
If this feature is ignored when I upload the POI through POI Loader to the 760, what is it used for?
I think the symbol issue is on Turbo's to-do list but he's probably concentrating on user functionality.
As I recall the names don't match up correctly to his symbols, but POI Loader and my nuvi's go by the symbol name, nothing else, when determining which to display.
Somewhere I have a csv and a gpx file of the 85 valid symbol names for my nuvi 200W and 765 and I'll try to find it and upload it if anyone wants.
If you go only by Name you will get the right symbol.
Edit- By the way the treasure chest is called Geocache and the open treasure chest is Geocache Found. I bet you probably already figured that one out though
I just tried to open a master excel file I have been using and now the address line includes city state and zip ad well as the street address.
Just a guess but it sounds like you either have a CSV format issue or are using the wrong import profile for the file.
I break up my address info into one column for each address item in Excel before I import it into GeePeeEx or Extra POI editor. That way if you have a field with a comma or something that you want to keep together Excel will put quotes around that bit in the saved csv file.
TurboCCC, you continue to do a fantastic job. I downloaded 2.98 and played around with it. You have improved this software dramatically. The phone number detection works much better in this new version.
One little annoyance is the delay in downloading the map after scrolling through many POI. I suggest that a delay before requesting the map would improve the overall speed and maybe decrease the unnecessary hit on the google site (if that is the root of the problem).
With a long file, there is a scroll bar on the list window. When clicking and holding in the scroll bar below the cursor, the list scrolls down repeatedly as it should (and by the way at the proper speed). The problem is that when you release the click, the map of the POI now on thop of the window will not appear for a long while. I wonder if the program is trying to get the map of every POI that were very briefly on top of that window before getting to the one there now. I recommend that you suspend the map downloading attempts until the list is stable for some time (longer than the automatic scroll speed).
I need some help.
I can't seem to get the program to work.
I downloaded the original file and then the current file.
When I open it - i get the error message --
"Component 'rich32.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid"
I am not nearly as knowedgeble as most of you snd am in need of "dummy" help
Go back to the download page and near the bottom look for Extra_POI_Editor_Installer+v250.zip and install it.Listed under troubeshooting.
Yes, the symbol name and icon do not all match. JD4x4 told me that a couple days/weeks ago and I forgot about it.
Edit: OK. Symbol problem found! I made a lookup using a newer symbol list from JD4x4.
N.B. Yes, I knew about the map request. I am not sure this is what is happening with the scroll bar (it could be a coincidence), but you are right I should not ask right away for the map when clicking on the scroll bar or using the arrows). I will try to add a timer for that.
Just wanted to say thanks for a wonderful program, it has made creating my own custom poi much easier.
JD4x4, I just had a look at the latest csv you sent me. You have a list of MapSource symbols that are not used by your 2 GPS. I used that new list and removed the unused Mapsource symbols. I should be more compliant now. I will post v2.99 tonight.
Kraken, you are welcomed.
Ok, so I'm new to the GPS world and got a Magellan Maestro 4040 as a gift. The poi editor that came with it won't let me specify address info. So I started searching for a new editor and found this one. Does it only work for Garmins, or can I use it on my model?
i did that originaly - then d/l the latest version -- same error
I can open Magellan files (or should be able to, if not, post me a file and I will make it work.), but I cannot save to Magellan yet. Their file format is giving me a headache.
Edit: IAHMALE, are you getting an error trying to open a Magellan file? If so, post me a link to the file and I will have a look at it.
i tried it again -- same error
I got the file from here. It was the KOA Campsites file. And I saved the CSV version which the magellan editor will read. I think it is just a downside to the Magellan. It will only let me differentiate between, lat/long, name, description. No address or phone breakdowns. Not the end of the world. Do you by any chance know how to delete a file from the maestro, I added it to my card inserted it started it and it read it fine but now I want to take it off and I thought I'd just take the card out and it would but it kept it even though I've taken the card out and deleted it from the card.
Sorry, I did not see your previous post. What is your OS? It is curius you are missing rich32.ocx and not richtx32.ocx. richtx32.ocx is part of the installation package and this should have solved the problem. I do not even have rich32.ocx on my computer (WinXP).
sorry, i hate to be a problem child
Changes from v2.98 to v2.99
- French version is included
- Removed some symbols from the list that were only used by MapSource.
- Reduce POI Edit window size to fit in 1024x768.
IAHMALE, Normally it works on Vista. Sorry, but only a Vista guy can help you.
Did you follow charlesd45's advice -- Go back to the download page and first install Extra_POI_Editor_Installer+v250.zip? (near the bottom of the page in the troubleshooting section)
Doing this will install files missing on Vista that the program needs. Afterwards, you can use whichever version (e.g. Extra_POI_Editor V299.zip) you want.
...both 2.50 and 2.99 worked on my Vista system
I don't have (or care to have) Vista, but I see that quite a few have issues like this when it comes to installing controls and/or progs. From what I've seen it all revolves around being in Administrator mode..
Maybe someone with Vista & knows about it can do an FAQ about how Joe Normal gets into Administrator mode, or runs this stuff with Administrator rights/priveleges, etc.??
Or find a nice link for a how-to??
You can disable administrator mode. It is meant as a block to certain programs opening on their own. Or, you can right click and open as administrator.
turboccc.Any chance that you could add downloading a gpi file then converting to a csv or gpx file?I know you have plenty to do and hate to ask because the program is doing a great job now.Sometimes it comes in handy to convert a gpi file.
I was just thinking of trying to tackle that for my Excel add-in. If turbo is busy with something else, maybe I'll give it a whirl. I'll wait & see what he says.
You have created a really great tool. I hope you don't let the I can't or it won't people get you down. You have done so much in such little time. I'm delighted with this FREE Tool that you have provided to the community. I can't say THANK YOU enough for the time you have spent.
If you want to continue, here are a couple of things you might put on your list.
One thing that I have found is if I'm not connected to the internet I'll get a script error as it's trying to find Google Maps. Maybe a switch to turn on/off internet access. Second, a variable distance to use when searching for doubles.
One again A Great Big THANK YOU for all of your work.
but didnt help.
I guess I will just live through you guys vicariously
