Extra_POI_Editor - A tool to View/Edit/Convert POI/TourGuides (Part 1)

Well, I guess it's time I start an official thread about Extra_POI_Editor at POI Factory.

It does too many things for me to explain in a short post, so let's say it will allow you to view, edit and convert (new!) any GPX/CSV/OV2/JPG/KML/MGLN POI file to GPX/CSV/OV2/KML. Yes! Geocoded JPG can be imported too!

* There are preview windows specially designed to simulate a 4.3" widescreen GPS like a nuvi 760, but the program will work for other GPS; the display in the program will not match exactly the non-widescreen GPS.

* The tool will allow you to see the POIs on a map. You can drag also the marker on the map and update the new coordinate. This is very cool to fine tune the POI location.

* You can also preview linked images and sound files used in TourGuides.

* EPE can do batch geocoding and reverse geocoding. It has special filters to extract State, Postcode, Phone and more. You can create custom column formats for your CSV files input and output, ...

* You can open POI Loader, MapSource or GoogleEarth directly from EPE to see all POIs on the map.

This is it for now. It does more than that and will probably do more later. Please post your comments and suggestions here.

I thing it would be nice to start a new one but keep the old one for reference for new people or us old ones that forget things. Maybe change the name of the thread just enough so people will know it is still the same topic. (Turboo's Program) smile

Yes

Yes, I was going that way too. First, I would add a ponter here to the new thread and also a pointer from the new thread to this thread. I would put it in the first post so everyone could find it easily.

The thread name would be very similar to the current one with probably a (Part 2) mention.

Sounds good

Part 2 is like keeping this and adding to it. Sounds good to me.

When is the next update?

My suggestion is to start a new thread at the same time as the next update and have the release number in the title. This will separate the discussions between the "old" and the new and it allow to leave the old thread open for awhile for people who want to talk about the previous release.

Awsome

Great job with the editor. My Nuvi is getting better every day thanks to you.

Could you add a data limit...it appears Reverse Geocoding has a limit of 5,000 requests/hour.

Reverse Geocoding

I am not in control of this limit. I could probably call a different reverse geocoder when the limit is reached. This would allow more flexibility.

I think 5000 per hour is not so bad, but since I am doing a lot of tests, I am often reverse geocoding the same POIs files often. If you have a 1000's POI, it does not take long to reach the limit.

V449

Turbo, Here are a few problems with the latest release....

1) Do a mass batch update and if there are address where the location can not be determine then a pop up box ask to display error in notepad. The problem is it can't find it.

2) If I try to save a file that has been opened by another program EPE will crash losing all of your changes.

New features to think about (if you have time):

A) Add a button to undo the last change.
B) Add a button to move to the next entry which needs attention.

Sometime I mix an old file with new records that have not been geocoded. I would like to jump to the next record that needs corr. (assume the new records are not group together).

Frisbee Golf File

First off I have to say it has been a pleasure to work with the tool - The learning curve has been a little steep but not too difficult.

The one comment/feedback I have right now...is when you are in the actual POI editing window and adjusting (grab) the marker and moving it - up pops up a box with coordinates - What is this boxs' purpose? When I click on the X to close it to get it out of the way it dose not adjust the coordinates in the POI - but yet when I click on the grab button it tells me I have to move the marker again...it seems to me this dual funcionality in which this is canceling out each other or you could just get rid of the pop up all together by having a reminder that you moved the markert and do you want to update the coordiantes..

Sorry if this is not clear...I'd be happy to explain it further...Again so far the tool is working well!

1- What OS are you using? Can you tell me the exact path to Notepad on your system?

2- Added in my ToDo. Simple to handle.

A) What "last change" are we taking about? Sort? save? Geocoding?, ... or simply a Ctrl-Z after changing a POI field?

B) How should I know a record needs attention? I can find POI without coordinates, without phone, ... Then I can build a list and display all records missing the user specified information. Let me know more about what you are looking for.

So why both is my question? What I am getting at is if you’re in here moving it around and decide to update – hit grab if not why do I need a pop up to display the coordinates? I find myself adjusting the marker twice just to do he one function..Again love the tool – I am just not sure why the pop up is needed at all?

Extra POI Editor and Locked Files in Windows7

Hi turbo:

I've recently started using Win7 and found that any file I create for custom poi's using "Extra POI Editor, always seems to be locked. Of course this is a pain because when you update the particular gpx file and try to save it, the locked file refuses to update. Consequently, when you use POI Loader to update the Nuvi, it will not show any updated file where the origianl was locked.
Is this a feature of Extra POI Editor, that those files are created as Read Only, or is it Windows 7 that's the culprit here? Must I take ownership of all these files in order to circumvent the situation?
Thanks for all your hard work in producing such a great product.

--
Nuvi 2595LMT Oregon 450 - Always drink upstream from the herd.

Read-only file?

Right click on the POI file and select properties.

Is the file read-only?

It could be effectively a "owner rights" issue. You and EPE may not be running in the same mode.

I hope other users here can help.

Installation Problems with Windows 7

I just installed EPE on a Windows 7 computer. Although the program seems to work, I encountered all sorts of different errors. Are there any fixes planned?

I did not write down all of the errors, but basically they fell into a couple of different categories. Some of the errors were the result of the install program trying to replace a file with a newer version, while I guess others were permissions issues?

Win7

Maybe I could install VB6 on my Win7 computer and make the installation package from there. This will provide the latest ocx\lib files.

To all: do not forget to use the new thread...

poi's missing lat/long data

Does this program "fix" poi's that do not have a lat/long in the file?

The reason I ask is I'm taking a "route" of addresses and trying to create a custom POI file and obiviously need the lat/long based on the address for the poi to work correctly.

Geocoding

EPE will translate an address to lat/long. Edit the POI, click the Geocoding button, then the Grab button and OK to save.

On Extra Poi Editor if you

On Extra Poi Editor if you click on Tools and scroll to Batch Reverce Geocoding it will run thru each custom poi and put in the coordinates.

I still would suggest you check them against the map to verify the coordinates.

GPS Visualizer will also batch code from an input file. You have your choice of Google with no accuracy report or Yahoo with a limit of 100 or so addresses at a time with an accuracy report. A lot of errors in POI files are due to addresses referencing a different street name, city, county, or zip code than what is in the database. This will lead to a set of coordinates that can be many miles off. A resolution report will show if your coordinates are for the address, street, or some other point than the actual location.

I LOVE IT.... and next version suggestion

Extra_POI_Editor is GREAT!!!

Best tool I have seen yet...

I do have an upgrade suggestion.

is there a way you can put in a BATCH ADD/INSERT/UPDATE??

like...

I have a CSV file that I want to convert to a GPX file or a GPX file that does not have any or has a few proximity alerts...

I would like to ADD the alerts in one full sweep.

right now as you know, you have to do it one by one and if I have a file with over 6000 POIs it can get be a long process

Thank you.

Current.gpx

I have been using your editor for some time and it has performed very well. I was working on cleaning up my names and other issues within my CURRENT.GPX file. For some reason it will not save any changes or new POI's. I was using the newest version and went back a few with the same result. I can open The FAVS from the menu and the changes are there until I disconnect the 755T and it reboots. I then do not see any of the changes, duplicates or new items. I also tried delete all Favs using the 755T and then open the FAVS folder and used OPEN MERGE to bring them back into the CURRECT.GPX now it reads NO DATA. Any Ideas?

Once you get them like you want in EPE save them as a Garmin gpx file.Rename the file to temp.gpx and paste it where the current.gpx file is and re-boot.

Save Favorites

EPE saves the Favorites as "EPE.gpx". Any .gpx in the folder will be merged with the existing Favorites. Not just temp.gpx. On my 760 anyways.

I think it is the first time I hear it does not work. I will retest.

N.B. Effectively, I cannot close the thread myself. Only Miss POI can.

Can't designate Editor.exe as the program to open GPX Files

I just upgraded from version 4.2 to 4.7. When I click on a file with the GPX extension windows asks for the program to open the file. After browsing to the Extra_POI_Editor.exe file, I click on it and get an error message. In experimenting it appears that I am unable to assign the editor.exe program as the default program to open the GPX file.

I did not have this issue with version 4.2. When I click on the Extra_POI_Editor.exe program file itself it opens as expected. I can then open the GPX file as expected.

Under the GPX files property sheet you can designate what program will open the file. However, I can't seem to get Windows to accept Editor.exe as the default program.

Does Extra_POI_Editor.exe need to be "registered" with Windows to be recognized as a default program to open GPX files?
