Extra_POI_Editor - A tool to View/Edit/Convert POI/TourGuides (Part 1)

Well, I guess it's time I start an official thread about Extra_POI_Editor at POI Factory.

It does too many things for me to explain in a short post, so let's say it will allow you to view, edit and convert (new!) any GPX/CSV/OV2/JPG/KML/MGLN POI file to GPX/CSV/OV2/KML. Yes! Geocoded JPG can be imported too!

* There are preview windows specially designed to simulate a 4.3" widescreen GPS like a nuvi 760, but the program will work for other GPS; the display in the program will not match exactly the non-widescreen GPS.

* The tool will allow you to see the POIs on a map. You can drag also the marker on the map and update the new coordinate. This is very cool to fine tune the POI location.

* You can also preview linked images and sound files used in TourGuides.

* EPE can do batch geocoding and reverse geocoding. It has special filters to extract State, Postcode, Phone and more. You can create custom column formats for your CSV files input and output, ...

* You can open POI Loader, MapSource or GoogleEarth directly from EPE to see all POIs on the map.

This is it for now. It does more than that and will probably do more later. Please post your comments and suggestions here.

Windows won't allow Extra_POI_Editor.exe to be used as a default

turboccc wrote:

Turbo

Correct. For some reason Windows will not let me assign Extra_POI_Editor.exe as the default program for GPX files. It allows other programs, such as Firefox (which doesn't do any good), to be set.

Otherwise the program seems to work as expected. I can open GPX files from the program.

Tried it

Turbocc,

I tried using the save to favs function and it did not appeat to work unless I did something wrong.

Tried Again today

Turbocc,

I decided to give this a try again today. I removed all *.gpx files except current.gpx. I then deleted all POI's using my 755T's function to clear MYDATA. I then use EPE to save to Favorites, rebooted and it worked with the EPE.gpx file the only one on the GPS except Current.

Thanks for your great work on this program.

Help with Extra POI Editor

I'm new at this gpx stuff, but I'm having quite the fund and, for the most part I'm successful at putting customer POI in my Garmin Nuvi 3760T. I did find, however when I load up a gpx file, such as the one for offbeat attractions US, I can't get the phone numbers to dial. My cell phone is paired with the nuvii, and it dials calls from the dial pad, and receives calls, but when I hit the dial button from a poi, it beeps, but doesn't dial.

I've tried preceeding the phone number with a +1, and I've tried it with speed and proximity numbers filled in and without, but nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions?

Off topic question...

Hi NJDrew1,

Please post your question outside this thread, but in the Garmin Talk forum. Somebody will be able to help you. This thread is reserved for Extra_POI_Editor questions.

Thanks.

Turbo

Excellent, turboccc!!

Part one has been so good. I am going to check out part 2. (Though I think I have greatest version of EPE, I will still check out part 2 thread).

Thanks, turboccc.

Great program and worth a donation

I downloaded and used your program for a few days and it is great. Still working through all the features but I hit the 'tip' jar with a donation based on what I have used so far.

Thanks.

Copying Single POIs from Files Containing Many

Hello Turbocc,

First, like others, I am VERY grateful for your software. I do not use PayPal, is there a place I can send a check or cash as a donation for those "couple hundred hours" you are sharing with us?

Second, on my Nuvi 760, I organize my POIs using the file-folder hierarchy it allows. In doing this, I sometimes want the same POI in multiple files (Like the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center is listed in the files Attractions, Rocky Coast, and Forest Hiking because all three exist there.) MapSource can make copies, but it also destroys my descriptions (overwriting them with whatever is in the comment field).

So what is the best way to "copy" a perfectly created POI from one file to another?

(Presently I open a copy of a multiple-POI file, delete all but one POI I want a copy of, save that one POI, and use Merge Open to bring it into one or more other multiple-POI file(s). That seem cumbersome for a piece of software so exquisitely written. I figure I am missing something obvious.)

Thanks for your help, respectfully and gratefully, Dave...

Right click

Right click on the POI you want to copy in the upper left screen, and select copy. Then you should be able to simply paste it into the other POI.

[EDIT: I thought this would work, but I was wrong. So I believe the only option available is to save the POI in question in its own file and do a merge with the existing files. While info from a particular POI can be copied to the clipboard, what is copied is limited compared to what's in a GPX file.]

There is No Simple Way

Thanks Strephon,

TurboCCC contacted me by e-mail sharing that there is at present no simpler way (than the one I shared in my original post) to extract a single POI from an aggregate file. S/he has been asked before, and has some ideas on how, but has been occupied with more pressing matters. I gently and respectfully suggested that perhaps the simplest method would be a Save-As option in the Right-Click context menu. All the elements are coded already, so in theory it should be much more simple than the drag-n-drop s/he is contemplating.

Also, I only occasionally use the process I shared. A GPX-file is a text file; it is easily edited with programs like NotePad, WordPad, PolyEdit, UltraEdit, etc. I use UltraEdit to ensure that no other format is accidentally applied to my work when I save AND with it I have way more editing capability than NotePad.

Thanks for replying, however, I always appreciate the supporting environment of POI-factory.

Dave...

Hi guys, please continue in the other thread. This one is too long and too old. Thanks.

Magellan Maestro

First off thank you, this is a wonderful program. So far I have used it to convert .mgln files to .gpx. I am new at this and this will probably be the dumbest question yet, but here goes. I would now like to use it to create some Magellan files but I do not see .mgln in the save as drop down. Can you tell me how this is done?

Magellan Maestro

OK, now I think I get it. Tell me if this is right. Make a .cvs, open it using the Magellan software and then save it so it becomes a .mgln

--

MGLN

Hi Moe iii,

Yes, saving to CSV is one way to do this. If you use the latest version (v4.85 or v.486), just do a "Save As" and you should find a ".MGLN" file type when saving. It is the last one at the bottom of the list.

A few months ago, I added the ability to save as MGLN after many months of head scratching.

Thank you. I have 4.7 I'll

I downloaded this morning with no problem. In fact it was so fast, I didn't even see it happen.

Maybe I held my tongue just right, or there was a computer issue. Either way, I'm glad I have it.

Another Thanks

I just got a new Garmin Nuvi and didn't want to lose my favorites from the old one.
I downloaded the Current file from the old Nuvi onto my computer. Installed your program. Plugged in the new Nuvi. Started up your program and Saved the old gpx file to Favorites!
It worked like a charm. smile smile
Now all my saved places are usable again.

Problem Installing EPE

Hi Turbo,

I'm new to this GPS business, and the first thing I'd like to do is Thank You for writing the EPE program. Although I did have problems loading the newer versions of your program, I was able to get an older version to work. I found your program to be really good for the purpose I needed.

I own a TomTom and I posted for help in that forum, so I'm going to suggest you take a look at that thread, because I've discussed the EPE problem there.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34122

I am able to use Version 4.70 just fine. To quote from my TT thread:

"Update: I played around with EPE and got it to work. What I did was go back to Version 4.48 and it worked just fine. Then I loaded each newer version, in order. They all worked fine up to Version 4.70.

"However, the 2 newer versions, 4.85 and 4.88 would not work. They seemed to install ok, but would not load up.

"So, I am working with 4.70 (File 4.7.0.0, dated 6/6/10) and it seems to work just fine. The program looks really good at this point!"

I *would* like to be able to upgrade to the latest version if possible. Maybe you could suggest how I might go about getting there.

Thanks for your help, and thanks again for what looks to be a very useful program.

Tom.

adding new poi's

ok, i know this is probably the wrong thread, but i have been searching and can't figure out where i saw it before. When you load new poi's to your device, it deletes custom poi's... this is what i have read....does that mean it deletes the same file name poi or all poi's? lets say i loaded starbucks poi. now i want to add safety camera poi. when i load safety camera does it wipe out starbucks? If it does then do I just load starbucks(again) at the same time as i load safety camera? in other words every time I do a load, I have to load all custom poi's I want at the same time?

adding new poi's

Yes. You are correct. This happens because POI Loader overwrite the .gpi file containing the POIs.

With the new version of POI Loader (maybe the one you have already), you can specify the .gpi file name on the GPS. Change it to camera.gpi or starbucks.gpi. If you use an old version of POI Loader, you should rename the file manually on your GPS. That way, you will not lose the previous POI file.

Magellan POI's

I have the new Magellan RoadMate 5175T. I just received confirmation from Magellan what I was starting to suspect - that you cannot download a custom list of POI's to this unit, or any of their newer units, for that matter. Considering the 5175 is their "flagship model," this is disappointing. Has anyone found a workaround for this? Would the POI Editor program help? Obviously the developers created 6 million POI's! I am a ham radio operator, and being able to download a custom list of amateur radio repeaters is not only helpful to my hobby, but also to public service. Thanks for any ideas.

probably

bart0977 wrote:

the best recourse would be either take it back to where it was purchased from and see if you can get a unit that allows custom POI or sell it on Flea-Bay and buy yourself a unit which allows what you need as an essential item.

Illiterate? Write for free help.

Magellan RoadMate 5175T.

EPE cannot help for that. You have to be able to transfer the custom POI on the unit for this to work. We have to know if Magellan:

1- Did not make the POI compiler and this is why it is not supported.
2- Did not make the firmware to process the custom POI in which case nothing will work until they do.
3- Intend to support those custom POIs in the future. If not, a different GPS is your only solution.

To Turboccc...

Noty sure where to put this but I just want you to know that without your great software and support, I would not be doing any more poi file (Exsample would be my offbeat poi file) If you did not do such great work, I most likly would have stoped long ago. PLEASE keep it up for all of us that want to make the GPS world a better place!

I guess what I am saying is "THANK YOU" for your hard work and understanding.

Happy New Year SIR!!

I made this software for people like you. Your dedication in making and maintaining POI files is more than admirable. I am personally not involved in any POI files on this site although I use them from time to time. EPE is my contribution to this site, to your work and to the work of all others like you that contribute in making those POI files for the good of eveyone else.

Thank you and thank you all. I wish you a Happy New Year 2012! May you have health for you and your loved ones.

Good point. The "Latest Multilingual Installer" is the one you'll want to use for the initial setup; IIRC it is approximately 8 MB in size.

Use Installer

Yes. Use the Installer from the Download page. It installs perfectly on Win 7 x64.

About "Multilingual": only the installer is multilingual. EPE is English only.

To Turboccc...

A question, I got new Garmin. It is a 2455lmt and tried to connect to it using your software, Seems it cant find it due to the fact that When I plug the new garmin in the port, it does not put a Drive in but in seaid shows a device with no drive mapping, Then when I open it up, it shows me "internal Storage" I do not have a sd card yet

What can I do to make this work? I want to transfer My Favortes to it?

I have no clue. I do not know the 2455lmt. I can't imagine Garmin made a GPS that cannot have custom POIs or ways to copy favorites. I hope there are other 2455 users out there than can help. Sorry.

If you right-click on the device do you have a "Map Network Drive..." option in the pop-up menu?

I can use poi loader and it finds it ok. I can also Use the Base map (Mapsourse) but I have to look for Curent.gpx manully and that displays as "{000000AA-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}" which I dont understand. Any help here would be a great help!

My older GPS did fine.. I sure hope other users have the same unit and can help us out. I am sure it is something I am doing wrong!

Thanks in advance!
