Don't leave home without it!

Have you ever got caught in a jam without your GPS?
Was on my way to work yesterday, left GPS home, major traffic jam do to accident, could of found different rout if only I had my GPS. Bad day!

GPS Backup

When I find myself in that condition I download the GPS in my cell phone. It cost $2.50 per day but anything to get around a pileup, or other obstruction. On long trips I rarely forget to bring my Garmin.

Never Leave . . .

Not much point in having a GPS if it’s not hooked up and functioning. Even in familiar areas ya just never know! Lots of things can go wrong. Even a small detour in some areas can be devastating. On a trip to Florida, while just the other side of Shreveport, there was a wreck on I-20. No MSN coverage in Shreveport. But, I was able to see an upcoming exit, whipped off there and within minutes was safely around the wreck, back on I-20 and merrily on my way. I hadn’t noticed the several other autos following me. Did they see the Nuvi on the dash, or did they just have the same idea? I’ll never know.

Yes

As an a/c heating contractor I could not go back to the old days of using a map book or map quest.
We had looked at different mapping programs and when we got our first GPS's we were hooked.
I even bought one for the wife's car and at first she said that it was not needed but after it being in her car with all the redlight and speed cams loaded she also has moved into the light.
Plus if mine takes a dump I have hers for back up.

Yes, I forgot my Nuvi 350 at home and as I tried to find a new store I turned the wrong direction, of course. The GPS pays for itself very quickly in saved gas and time.

OK, just can't let this pass without comment.
How long have you lived and worked at the same places?

You might want to consider just LOOKING at a paper map and maybe taking a Sunday drive or two to scout out an alternate route to work.....maybe. ???

And if you have space, you might want to consider leaving that paper map IN the glove box. It will still work in extreme heat and cold and nobody will break into your car to steal it !!! mrgreen

If you work a short distance away, then it shouldn't problem as you pretty much already know the start/end areas. That brings into question the area -in-between- those two...if you have to commute quite a distance, you cannot possibly scout out alternate routes in advance, especially since you can't predict when or where you'll actually be in a traffic jam. If you live/work in an urban area such as here in SoCal, that would be next to impossible.

The paper map however is a good backup plan.

I don't think they were

I don't think they were implying they didn't know other ways to go because of the accident, but rather other ways that were not also clogged by traffic trying to get away from the accident.

Also, in my case, I have 2 good ways to go to work. One is take the highway and the other is the side streets. Once I commit to take the highway and if there is an accident I am unaware of, it becomes very difficult to make up this time. If there is an accident, I am late.

Even when I know where I am going, I always feel better when I have my Nuvi with me. It just gives me a feeling of confidence... that I will never get lost.

I sense trouble or worse

I sense the possibility of a funeral in the future and I don't mean your wife. What makes you think you can just take hers if yours quits? She'll beat you senseless if you try to steal hers.

ka1167 I'm with you, it's pretty bad when you need a security blanket as an adult. If you have driven the same routes over and over again how much more confident could you possibly get?

Also always have a paper map in the glove box,if you need feel better just in case your Nuvi craps or you want to look farther down the road and not zoom the Nuvi. Just a good back up!

Mine never leaves the car when I'm at home unless I need to hook it up to the PC for some reason. That way I don't have to think about it. (my car stays in the locked garage when it's home)

I drive 40 minutes each way to work, and here in south jersey where I'm from, there is only one direct rout, the Garden State Parkway. There is an alternate rout that will take you 45 minutes out of the way that I'm familiar with. there are roads that snake through the pines that I am not familiar with, and most of them lead to no ware, or will take you even further out of the way. If I hadn't left the GPS at home, I would of found the shortest alternate through the winding roads through the never ending pines of south jersey! It is very easy to get lost or turned around if you don't know the roads! And I am not originally from this area, I've only lived here for about 9 years, and never needed to now that area of the pine lands!

You really have to learn when someone is trying to make a joke.
