New bug in nuvi 7x5 v3.10 & v2009.11 maps

A new bug has been discovered in nuvi 7x5 series v3.10 using the new 2009.11 maps. If you use map panning mode and zoom in to the screen and place the pointer on either a street or a POI (at least those built into the mapset), the name of the POI or the street is no longer being displayed.

v2.50 or v3.00 do *not* have this problem.

Also, if you disable the 3D Buildings map (which you now need to do by renaming x:/Garmin/gmap3d.img to something else so the nuvi does not recognize it), the problem also goes away.

Please report this issue to Garmin to get it resolved ASAP.

I will calling Garmin, today, and read them the riot act. If they don't recognize the problem(s), and have a fix in the near future, I'm returning my 785T and going straight to TomTom.

No problems

I have both a 705W and 765wt with the new 2009.11 maps and have no problems as described. I do not know about the firmware v3.10 I cannot find any firmware version info anywhere, but the sw version is 4.80 and I just ran the Webupdater 2 days ago and got the latest versions. I do not normally use the 3d maps and prefer the 2d version, but I tried the 3d, panned the map and was able to put the cursor on many roads and POI icons, which all displayed the correct information.

With your 765T, do you find

With your 765T, do you find that the map redraw is fast or slow? On my 785T, it is very slow on map redraw. Wondering if it is just me or most people. Also, wondering if it is because of the new map update or 3D. My 680 is about 3 times as fast.

It is slower

I have noticed that my 755t is much slower on map redraws than my 760 was. It's kind of annoying especially considering that Garmin hyped the faster processor in the 7x5 units.

I just sent an email to Garmin about the panning mode poi display problem.

Does anyone know where to find the v3.00 firmware. I tried looking for it but can't find the 7x5 series firmware updates anywhere.

@greg2561

See the topic I started here...I've linked directly to the post I made on how to backdate your firmware along with links to the available versions.

Thanks Dorkus

I saved v2.5 and v3.0 to my computer in case I decide to revert back. I have decided to just hold off for now, because v3.10 "Corrected issue that caused some map areas to draw on top of the roads." which is a bigger problem for me than seeing the poi names on the browse map page.
Garmin tech support replied to my complaint about it with this:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I actually grabbed a hold of a 755 that had version 3.1 and the POIs and street names came up perfectly on it. It is possible that the software upgrade did not go through properly on your unit. I would try to run the WebUpdater program again and reinstall the same software version. Make sure to install any firmware and GPS chipsets that are available in the additional updates as well as any localization data.

Once you do this, disconnect the unit from the computer and you should see labels when you touch on a street or POI on the map screen, but please let me know if you continue to have issues.

I tried as suggested with no luck. Only changing the name of the gmap3d.img corrects the issue, which I explained in my reply to Garmin. Lets see if they get it fixed.

Typical Garmin reply...

Sounds like a typical Garmin reply...either do a "reset all user data" or "re-flash the firmware". It's doubtful that they had a unit running the same combination of v3.10 and the newest v2009.11 maps with the new 3D Buildings map enabled...if they did, they would see the error as it's been reported and verified by numerous sources.

I've reported the problem to them with full explanation and the circumstances that trigger the error. They've replied that the error has been reported (or at least they've said so) and to look for a "new" firmware version soon to correct the issue(s). I sometimes wonder if they even bother to read and comprehend the errors/bugs reported or if they just skim the message, then just brush it off as being "user error".

Here's hoping the next firmware won't introduce yet another bug somewhere else (yeah, right...)

This has been going on like this for a long time now with the 7x0 series...sorry to say that it looks like the 7x5 series is next in line. rolleyes

Map redraw

With both the 765wt and 705w I have no problem with the speed of the map redraw, but then again,I do not use the 3d mode and prefer the 2d modes.

Now they are acknowledging the problem

They sent me this response after I sent them my reply to their response:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

We have experienced some issues with the 3D mapping on these units,
which we're working to address. I apologize for the trouble--we should
have this corrected in a future update.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery! Hopefully it will be resolved in 3.20!

nuvi 785T problem

I installed the latest firmware last night and I already had 2009.1 map installed. Garmin worked fine this morning, but tonight is just states "Loading maps" on start-up and never finishes. It's been like this for a hour now and I tried to connect it to the computer, but it isn't being recognized as connected. Does anyone know how do do a reset? I've tried powering it off and on several times, but all I get is "Loading maps".

I now can get the "computer connection" screen, but the green bar isn't moving. And the computer still doesn't recognize the Garmin connection.

Did you try a different usb cable? A different usb port in the back of your computer, etc etc...

To reset the nuvi

Slide the poser key to the left and hold there for 8 to 10 seconds.. Page 51 of the 7x5 manual

Garmin email

Dorkus, I was happily using my 765 enveloped in ignorant bliss until you pointed this out. Now it's bugging the... well, let's just say I'm not happy.

I think I sent an email to Garmin. I went to the support area of their website, filled out the form letter, described the problem & stated that I had already reloaded the software via WebUpdater with no luck. When I clicked on the submit to Garmin button, I didn't receive any feedback such as a "thank you" screen or confirmation email. There was a note at the top of the screen that I was using an unsupported browser (Safari) so I opened the page in Firefox & sent it again. Still didn't get any reinforcement that the mail went through.

Is there an address to which I could send an email directly?

Trying to help the cause.

Thanks, I do know how to read my manual. I've tried the power button slide reset several times, but I still end up with either the "Loading maps" screen, or the computer connect screen, with no further activity nor recognition by the computer that the Garmin is connected. I was looking for more of a hard reset, but the manual doesn't mention one.

Bad News

The very samething happened to my 750 and I tried everything you did, nothing worked and it had to go back to Garmin. Call Garmin and get a Return Authorization it will minimize the days you are without a working GPS.

unresolved point identification issue

Poifect wrote:

techsupp@garmin.com is the direct tech support email address.

Just to note that the 7x5 unit software v3.30 fixes this issue somewhat, BUT only in some areas...other areas are still broken for point identification. Here's the email I sent to Garmin that identifies 100% that the problem still exists.
---------------------------------------------------
According to the 7x5 series v3.30 changelog:

"Changes made from version 3.10 to 3.30:

* Corrected issue that prevented being able to identify points on
the map when browsing the 2009.11 CNNA maps."

The issue above has NOT been fully resolved. Here is what I'm seeing
after updating to v3.30 and is 100% reproducable, 100% of the time:

Point identification does NOT work in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Go directly across the river from Cincinnati into Kentucky, and point identification works there.

Point identification does NOT work in the northern Illinois cities of Rockford and Chicago.

It does work further south in Bloomington and Champaign, Illinois.

Go even further south to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and it stops working again.

On the coasts, it works in L.A., does not work in New York City or Washington, D.C.

Problem Solved...Sort of

Well, I ended up having to return the Garmin for a replacement. When the replacement arrived, I tried to register it and got an error that it was already registered. Apparently I received a refurbished unit. The real problems started when I tried to reload my North American Update and Europe DvD. They wouldn't install since they were locked to my old unit. Five hours (two on hold), I've finally got the maps installed to the new unit, except for the Europe update. They stated that was a problem with my account settings, so I have to wait another day or so for the database people to fix. At least now I do have a working Garmin.

Update to my situation

First time I've ever quoted myself. After 3 emails & two phone calls to Garmin, they are replacing my unit.

While speaking with a tech on Tuesday, he ran the normal gambit of emotions, first telling me that this was the first he's heard of this problem, then after I told him of this & other forums on the subject, admitted that they know of the problem that it's being addressed in the next software update, then he tried to recreate the problem on a 785 but couldn't & offered to replace the unit. Being an honest fellow, I tried to talk him out of an exchange (once), mentioning that I didn't believe it to be a hardware issue since the problem only arose after the latest software update, but he was out of ideas.

On that subject, I'm a bit disappointed with their tech support. Each time I've had to speak with them, I've always seemed better informed than they -which is a bit sad as I'm new to this stuff. It seems that whatever the problem, their solution is to reinstall the software & do a hard reset... even after I've told them that I've already tried both. They are, however, very pleasant, considerate, speak english & ultimately stand behind their product.

I asked if they were sending a referbished unit & he said, no, it would be brand new.

Lastly, I asked about unregistering my old unit once sent in. He told me to wait until I had confirmation that it was received by Garmin, & by that time I should be able to unregister on their website. So I did get a little fresh information on a new web feature!

Update

So what did they end up sending you? I received a refurbed unit after I had to send in my 2 month old system. I also found that when the tech support answers the phone, you need to ask for the Mac support team. I've found that they are more knowledgeable.

Some good, some not so good

From now on, I'll ask for someone from their Mac support team -thanks mstrehle.

I received a brand new unit & most is well. This one's screen is noticeably yellower (when compared to my wife's 765) but I can live with that. The POI's are back & I am currently running software version 3.40 with the City Navigator North American NT 2009 3D & 2D maps. The touchscreen issues are a bit worse than my last unit. It mis-registers my input about 15% of the time, but I'll live with that too. Also, battery life seems extremely short with this one & it has a hard time acquiring satellite contact. I'm just tired of going around with them. It's obvious that this product line has some root level problems.

As I noted in another node, I'm afraid to update the thing, as every time I have in the past, some other issue arises. I qualify to upgrade for free for the 2010 maps but see (in the aforementioned node) that others who have upgraded lose their junction view. Upgrading in the world of Garmin is like playing Russian Roulette.

After receiving the new unit, I tried updating my wife's 765's software to version 3.40 (she's got 2009.11, or whatever maps were current prior to the 2010 release) & she too has now lost her POI identification. Unfortunately, I'll have to call Garmin on that one.

New Updates on the 785

Anyone having problems with the new updates? I just ordered the lifetime updates and am downloading them now. In another 2 hours, I should be able to install!

Update on the 785

I just updated my Nuvi 785T today with CNNANT2010C Map. Everything works no problems at all.

Update Problems

Well, I was able to update the North American map with 2010C, but then the European update wouldn't load. After several hours on the phone with Garmin, finally got back to the 2009.1 update back on the unit, but not the 2010 update. Not sure what is going on, I seem to have this problem every time I try and update the European maps. It's like the Update program will not recognize that the previous map is there to update.

Master Hard Reset for Nuvi 7x5

Since it took me a while searching on the web, I thought I would post the correct instructions here since this thread showed up:

1. Turn the device OFF
2. Place your fingertip or the eraser end of a pencil in the bottom right corner of the touchscreen
3. While pressing down on the screen, power ON the unit and continue pressing on the screen. A message displays to confirm if you really want to delete all user data?
4. Touch Yes.
5. The unit will now restart.
6. Follow the onscreen prompts to set up the nuvi.
7. Once the reset is complete, please place your unit in an area with clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

Slow 765T

My 765T also became very slow after map update. Noticeably delayed response to identify the direction change and recalculate the route.

No prob with 765t yet

Other than freezing momentarily when spelling sometimes or pushing one number and it typing another have noticed no slowing down in re-drawing map or recalculating after latest map update.
Seems odd that some have the problem and some don't. Assuming all have the same software could it be the hardware? Namely the processors used in some batches. Maybe some of us got better/different ones.
I purchased mine from costco back in AUG 09.
