Question on Nuvi 1690 Storage Size

Hi folks,

I recently bought a Garmin Nuvi 1690 and I like it. I have downloaded POI's and Vehicle icons to my garmin but apparently I ran out of internal memory. I bought a 4 GB micro SD card just for this.

I am also trying to update the map and software for this unit. My concern here is I just got a message that there is no more space on the internal drive.

First question, is it possible for me to move all information/GPS system files (that is cut and paste all files) from the internal memory to the micro SD?

And final question, if I am downloading the Software update online, and my internal memory ran out and the update did not complete. Would this cause problem on the GPS unit like make it unusable/damaged if I don't complete the update?

Any help in achieving my goal of making the micro sd card as the place where the GPS would boot up the unit would be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Servie

Limited memory

The 1690, like most of the newer units has only 2 GB of internal memory. Delete all the unused voice, vehicle and help files to gain some space. Put the POI files on the SD card. You can use the SD to hold all the vehicles and swap them in and out of internal memory as desired. You can't move the system files.

.

All that can be placed on the SD Card are maps, user loaded POIs (as from POI Factory) and any music or photos. System dependent files such as voices, help files, text files and vehicles will not be recognized if placed on the SD Card.

.

Please remember to contact Garmin and file a complaint about the lack of sufficient memory in these units. Memory is dirt cheap, it is unbelievable that Garmin tries to save a few pennies per unit by cutting back on memory!

If people don't complain, or better yet stop buying Garmin, then Garmin won't ever change.

Deleting Files

I have a 1690 and just updated it with the latest map. Before I did that, I deleted all the help files and voice files that I don't use. The map loaded fine. Also, I have over 300,000 poi's loaded to the internal memory and haven't had a problem with it. I haven't had to use an SD card for anything yet.

I was wondering if I would

I was wondering if I would still be able to update my maps that I downloaded from garmin to my GPS if I only have 330 MB left on the internal hard drive.

So far, I have deleted the voice files, vehicle icons and help files that I don't need. However, having only 330MB left on the internal hard drive, I am not sure if I would be able to update my maps.

Do I have to copy all the updated map file to micro SD card and when I boot the GPS, the device should pick up the latest one instead of the old map file? I copied all vehicle, poi, voice and help file in the micro SD card.

If there are other steps, please let me know. Thank you very much everyone for all your valuable inputs.

Have a great weekend!
