anybody ever run a defrag or scandisk on their garmin? I can see it is easy to do but haven't do so yet. I can't imagine it would hurt anything. Thoughts?

why?

Why would you want to do that?
It's probably flash memory, which defrag will have either no effect on, or worse vastly shorten the life of the storage.
Flash memory is not designed to be defragged. The limited read/write cycles will be vastly shortened by defrag.

I was thinking in terms of making it a more efficient faster unit. It may be flash memory but from what I have read it is also it's own locked down little OS. If that is true then I would think you could scan and/or defrag the OS. Maybe I am mistaken. I haven't found much info on it other than one or two opinions. Just wondering if anyone has found any benefit to it or if it is indeed a bad thing as some would suggest.
Maybe I am mistaken....

You are mistaken. No matter what the OS, it is still a FAT based file system on flash memory. You will get no speed improvement by defragging. I do take exception with the claim that you will "vastly" shorten the life (unless you have a really really bad defragger), but you would likely make several writes of most used sectors, and flash does have limited write capability. So nothing to be gained, and something to be lost, no reason to do it.
Defrag
This has been discussed before in a few topics, with differing opinions. Here are 2 examples:

How would you do it??

Yes, I also thing you are "mistaken".
Defrag only helps a device with mechanical seek times (hard drives). The OS is loaded first so it's probably not fragmented anyway.
...AND...
The little OS doesn't have a defrag program of it's own so how do you propose to do it?? Are you going to let XP or Vista have a crack at it as an external drive??
I think that could turn out to be a BIG mistake.
