Defragment Garmin

Can you Defragment your GPS? Would it hlp speed things up. I looked at mine and it stated that it need to be done.

No Help

GPS memory is solid state. Defrag is meant for a hard disk drive that has rotating platters and moving read/write heads. Defrag helps a HDD, but does nothing for a solid state memory device like a GPS or flash drive.

Flash RAM

I have defragmented my USB Pendrives from time to time... and it hasn't seemed to hurt any of them, but im sure that ive seen absolutely no change in access speed.

GPS units are much more expensive, and from what I have seen much more volatile and prone to damage, so im less likely to want to play around with it in that way.

But hurray for Defrag of rotating platter based hard disk drives! They help a HUGE amount for speed on my Computer.

I sense that you are about to do something that is not wise.

PLEASE backup everything on your GPS to your computer hard drive before you go messing around with the files on there.

According to this site:

you should *never* defrag your solid state drive.

No more Defraging Flash RAM

I'll probably not Defrag my Flash RAM again, because that article makes sense.

However, defraging under a handful of times, which is all i have done, is not risk to the USB Pendrives any more than a heavy day of writing would be to wear it out.

The article is correct that data recovery is much more successful with files not defragmented, so weigh the likelyhood you would corrupt your data and want to use one of these ( like www.recovermyfiles.com ) as opposed to your worrys about your drive failing entirely.

Still I dont plan to defrag again, ... or do i??

Its true that I performed a test in 2 of the 4 defrags i did of Flash RAM, and using USB v2.0, both a 128MB PenDrive and a 2GIG Pendrive (both 50% full) Defragged FASTER when i simply moved all the files from it to my computer, and then back again. It puts them all back in the most defragmented order usually. And these 2 tests beat the defrag software anyway, when both drives were at exactly 35% fragmentation. Take it for what its worth to you. But my impression is, that if you really want your files defragmented for some reason other than speed, such as recovery ability, then just dump to your PC and back once in a while. But if you are already doing that, then why not keep a copy on the PC? That way who cares about recovery? You already have a backup. smile

Okay, im done on the topic. Have a great day.
