How do I get my new POIs to show up?

FAQ How do I keep from overwriting previous loaded POI's? wrote:

After you load your POI file, you will find in the \Garmin\Poi folder of your GPS a poi.gpi file. You can rename it to whatever you want (with the .gpi extension) and load another POI file.

I followed the above instructions and loaded four POI files but they did not show up on my Nuvi 265W. What should I try next?

I renamed the original file from poi.gpi to All In One.gpi, then created three new POI files, renaming them to
POIs.gpi
@poi.gpi
z Alerts.gpi

Then I disconnect the Nuvi and went into extras, but the Original file was still there and none of the new ones showed up. What did I do wrong, what can I try next. Did I it any key words with my names?

What original file?

As far as I know the nuvi doesn't come with a poi.cgi file if you have never installed any POIs. And you seem to think that there are things that are in your "original file".

If you have POI sets or folders with POIs in them in one .cgi file and there is a naming collision with another POI file, then you might not see the newest POIs. For example, if a.cgi contains a folder of retail stores and you download new POIs to poi,cgi and rename it to b.cgi and it also contains a retail stores folder, you may not see the new retail stores in b.cgi, just the contents of a.cgi.

The way that I deal with this is to have a number of cgi files that contain distinct groups, stores, restaurants, road information, ham radio repeaters and so on. When I want to add to or update any of these categories I move the current POIs and related support file, in their subfolder, into a directory where POI loader always starts. Then I add the new or changed files. I run POIloader. Then it is important to remember to go into the folder in the nuvi and delete the old poi file (such as stores.cgi) and rename the poi.cgi file to that name. Then when you fire up the Garmin disconnected to the computer you should be able to find you new and updated POIs.

I made the original poi.cgi file

I made the original poi.cgi file. It is one large file containing custom POIs I've downloaded from this site, plus some I have made myself.

I split that file into four files. My problem is that when I look in extras on the Garmin I see one file. When I look at the data in L:\Garmin\POI\ I see four files.

I'll move All In One.cgi to another folder and see if that fixes it. That is a copy of the file I split.

What's a cgi file?

What are these cgi files that you guys are talking about?

I think there must be some duplication.

I'm guessing that you have some duplication between the "original" file or files and the new file. You should not have to move anything out of the POI foler on the garmin, just renaming works fine for me. I have about 9 different cgi files in there, sever with subfilders with many different POIs in them, two that are just POIs that I didn't create any category for so they just loaded from the top level. The only conflict I have ever seen is that if I load a new copy of something and I forget to delete the old filename.cgi then I can get conflicts and not see the new stuff.

Also worth noting is that if you do it this way you will not get the various folders to sort alphabetically. that only happens when you load everything at once.

Also, don't try having the same folder in two of your cgi fles. In o\\other words, don't create a burgers folder and put Wendys and Burger King in it, upload it and then rename the resulting poi.cgi to eat.poi and then go back and take those two out of the burgers folder in your computer and add CarlsJR and Fudruckers, upload it to a new poi.cgi and rename that to eat2.cgi. That will not work, only one of the of the cgi folders can contain a burgers sub-folder (or a POI file name) for things to work properly.

I see them now

Ok, now I see my changed, just not the way I expected to see them. All four files are merged under the same area called 'Custom POIs.' I expected that screen to give me four options, one for each file, named after the file name.

That is the way I would have programmed it. Now I understand you point about having the same folder names in different files.

I'll have to think about how I want to organize this. For one I want to stuff interstate exit waypoints out of the way in some folder.

Second, folders look just like like a custom waypoint file. I've solved that by naming all folders with the same prefix of 'POI.' That works ok, but P is a bit too late in the alphabet.

L:\garmin\poi\poi.cgi

After you have downloaded POIs and loaded them into your Garmin, look in the folder \Garmin\poi for a file named poi.cgi. That is what we are talking about. If you have not loaded any custom files, then you have not create one yet.

filename.cgi.old

That is what I had done, which caused me problems. I suppose I can rename it to filename.cgi.old.

As long as it doesn't end in cgi (or other recognized extensions) you should be OK. But in general I would just delete it. You should have the original POI files on your computer if you need to re-upload them, and the less you clutter this folder the simpler it will be to keep track of everything.

On my 760 they are gpi files not cgi...

I'm not sure what the custom POI thing is all about, all that I have in my extras is custom POIs. I suspect that it may be something to do with Tour Guides, which might also show up under extras. But my little 250 doesn't even support Tour Guides (or mp3s), so I could sure live without this extra level to co through. But you'll just learn to tap through it to get to your POIs.

It's simply a typo

Good catch. I stand corrected. Rookie mistake. Now I get it. There are no cgi files, it's simply a typo.

It started off gpi then changed to cgi.. (can't get it?)

It's the same. I touch 'Extras' then I touch 'Custom POIs.' Then the contents of my POI files show up. I just don't see the need for the two screens to get there. Is there anything else you can put under Extras besides Custom POIs?

Yes

Travel guides for one thing. Don't know why your filenames aren't showing up as categories under Custom-POIs, but if you can't solve that, you might try putting an added subfolder under each current subfolder using the same name. Then point to the upper subfolder and POI Loader will use the name of the level2 subfolder to create a category.

You might also want to look at an alternative method with all the advantages of renaming without having to actually go through the renaming. Look for ScrugneysGundogs' explanation at: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/17095 .

grin I have no idea if they would be worth it to you.. I received one free with my nuvi 770 "route 66" It starts in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles.. and you can't reverse it.. go from Los Angeles to Chicago. So it's kind of useless to me...
