Ah, as promised, Garmin has just released the Garmin WebUpdater that replaces the one that OS 10.5.6 messed up. I’ve just updated my unit and all seems to be fine.

Nope. Just pointing out that, /usually/, if software is first created for a PC then later is made to work with a Mac, the Mac version lacks all the features of the PC original.
This is not, however universally true. I have heard that when M/S Office was first ported to the Mac, the Mac version was better than the original one created for PCs.

That's because they had to fix the "undocumented features" in the package to get it to run.
