Does anyone out there know if Apple has any plans on putting a GPS into the touch? If that were to happen I would seriously consider buying it. I think that would make it one of the best products out there. I don't need the cell phone but to watch movies, listen to music, surf the web and skype (at hotspots) as well as having a GPS would make it very, very tempting.
Wouldn't that be called the iPhone?
But that would costs me phone service plus $30 a month. I would like it on the touch so there wouldn't be any additional fees that I would have to keep paying and paying. I would pay more up from not to have the ongoing cost.
I don't know if they would put GPS into a Touch since it relies on a network connection to overlay coordinates with a downloaded map. Even on the iPhone if you turn off the cell network and wi-fi you cannot use the map functions.
If the day comes when you can install maps to reside on the Touch, just like a GPSr does now, then they may add GPS capability.
All is not lost however. There is limited location services.
From the Apple web site:
For iPod touch with Maps, the Maps application provides your approximate location using information based on your proximity to known Wi-Fi networks (when on and available). The more accurate the available information, the smaller the circle identifying your position on the map. The feature is not available in all areas. Known Wi-Fi networks are predominantly in urban areas.
Someone has to come up with an accessory that provide power, FM traffic, and gps circuitry that plugs in to the Itouch port. It might be able to use the built-in map that came with the Itouch, otherwise, the map will have to be provided. Software will have to read from the contacts and also allow you to add POIs.
One guy work on GPS for iPod touch and iPhone. You can buy from his website

As I know, now GPS work on iPod touch 1Gen only.
Apple does a good job of incrementally improving its products. Bet there will be a GPS in the next generation. It makes sense because so many applications use GPS and Apple has invested a lot in iphone/ipod applications..
The Most important is Software. Apple don't have turn by turn navigation. Also Apple not allows other company to do this. Many rumor think that Apple may be create this program by them self.
I will keep my fingers crossed that they add GPS to the touch. I want to buy a new iPod and I want to buy a new GPS and having them together would make life so much easier!
Since the iPod Touch was just refreshed in October I would bet we won't see GPS until middle of 2009 at the earliest. I don't know what the life cycle for the Touch will be, but I would guess they will keep this model as it is for a while.
The pattern for Touch has been a release several months after the iPhone is upgraded. I expect a new iPhone next summer, so a new iPod Touch would be expected in the fall of 2009.
I own an ipod touch 2g and they have the app maps preinstalled with it. I didn't look into the hardware, but the Maps app and many other apps will ask if they can use location services to find you. Most likely it's just using the wifi ip address to located you.
