Not Sure it installed

Just got my 1st GPS (Garmin 255w). Installed POI Loader for Mac. Set up a folder with POI's from this site, most .cvs some gpx along with BMP Icons all in the same folder with BMP names matching. Did the install with POI Loader and said successful but I'm not so sure. As I'm driving past eg. McDonald's on my way to a destination should I see the icon on my 255 as I drive by, if so I'm not.

try this

You will only see an icon if zoomed in very close, not usually at normal driving zoom setting, and even the only if that particularly MickyD is in the database (same may be missing) and if you got the name of the BMP icon file exactly right.

Try this: tap "where to", navigate to "Extras", If you even have an extras you should have custom POIs loaded, if not then you don't. Tap extras, Tap custom POIs, tap you way to ay POI you care about, they should be sorted by distance from you once you get into a particular POI set. Try to find the MickyD that you were interested in, or just pick any handy one. Tap it. Then tap map. zoom in all the way. If you see the icon that you want you have that working as well as it is going to work, if you don't then check the instructions and file names.

Turn POI's On

spooner, be sure that the POI alerts are turned on. You have to go to Settings-Proximity Points-Change-check Custom POI box to get the alerts to work.

At least I have to on my 260W. Hope it works for you. Happy New Year!

Thanks guys. Well the POI's

Thanks guys. Well the POI's are there, found them in the extras. I tried what you said Mike but my 255 does not seem to have the Proximity Points setting button. Found a list of POI icons in the edit favorites section, should I be seeing in this list the custom ones I down loaded or are they the factory Garmin only's.

Favorites use only the built-in icons, not custom icons.

If you don't have any custom pois installed it will not be there. Are you sure you have them installed?

Edit.Just went to Garmin site and looked at your owners manual and the setting will be there once you install the custom pois.

Garmin POI Loader

When using the poi loader do not use express mode. Use manual mode for laoding. The next screen will allow the selection of proximity alerts, and and distance you want the alert from the poi. After the install the proximity alert icon will be displayed under tools, settings, proximity points. Hope this helps!

I don't seem to have the

I don't seem to have the express/manual option on the mac version of POI loader. Am I missing something or not supported on mac?

Mac users must use the beta version to have the option of manual mode. It is available at:

Note that if you delete POI files on your GPS via your Mac, it places the file into a trash folder which the GPS still sees. You must also empty your trash on the Mac before unplugging from the Mac.

If you mean you will drive to the location, you don't have to do that. You can get just as reliable info by putting the unit in simulation mode, setting your location to a spot close to the test POI, choosing a destination just beyond the test site, and hitting GO.

simulation mode... thats good to know. I saw that option but hadn't got a chance to play with that yet. By the way all is well with the poi's, image (bmp) showing up along with alerts.
