POI locations not being displayed on Nuvi 205

I uploaded a POI file to my Nuvi 205. The places are not displayed on the map when I drive. When I go to the menu and search the POIs, the file is there, and the locations are correct. Is there something I need to do to turn on displaying the POI?

Touch where to,extras and

Touch where to,extras and touch custom pois. You should see the ones you downloaded. You have to select one of them.

What mode are you in

I do not use 3-d, but on 2-d mode you need to be zoomed in 300 feet or less for the icons to show as you drive around.

See if that helps

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/19494 .

Since this question is asked just about every day, I wonder if we shouldn't address it in the FAQ's? Miss POI?

No, that does not work. On

No, that does not work. On top of that, that would be kind of useless. After all, if my GPS is set to 300 feet, I would most likely see the place before it is displayed on my GPS. Isn't the whole idea to know that the place is somewhere ahead of me? Maybe I am thinking that this should do something it cannot. I want to drive down the highway and see a symbol on the map that there is a WalMart in the area. Is that not the idea of these files?

Not really

It's to guide you to the location, at least that is how I use mine...

If all 6 million+ POIs displayed when zoomed out, any time you were in a business area, you'd be unable to see anything on your screens except icons. Everybody seems to think it would be cool to see the icons, but do you really decide where you are going to drive by looking at the screen of a GPS and saying, "Oh, there is a WalMart nearby, let's see if it is like the other 20 thousand WalMarts?"

Anyway, the Garmin units don't do what you were hoping.

I have seen posts saying

I have seen posts saying that the Tom Tom does show the icons when you drive.Looks like that would clutter up the screen but have not seen the Tom Tom screen with the icons showing myself.

i did look over the FAQs,

i did look over the FAQs, but there are over 200 pages of them. Perhaps a small section that just introduces what POIs are and how they are used would be of some help.

OK. I now know that, but it

OK. I now know that, but it would be nice. What I had in mind was that gas is almost always a little cheaper at Walmart, so, if I needed gas and knew a Walmart was a couple miles up the road, I would be able to know where to stop. Garmin's manual for this unit is really terrible, it tells you almost nothing about how to do things. Anyway, thanks for the help.

What about audio?

What about an audio alert that said, "Rick, how's the gas? Walmart ahead."

GPS was not intended for browsing

No, that's not the purpose of a GPS; browsing a map. The purpose is, you tell it where you want to go and it tells you how to get there. The screens are too small to be effectively used for visual browsing. Think of driving in a heavy urban area with loads of businesses on either side of the road. Your screen would be completely filled with icons if they showed them all. We have all had the same thought process as we bought our units and explored the capabilities. And the realization finally sets in that a screen filled with tiny icons would not help because we can't safely study the screen while we're driving.

You can get some of the functionality you want by using POI Alerts. Look that up in the FAQs. With an alert set, you can keep your eyes on the road and you will get an audible alert. The icon for it will show on the map but still with some display limitations.
