Speed cameras

What/where are "Speed Cameras" We have tons of discussion about the "red light" cameras but virtually nothing for "speed cameras". Do they not exists? Do they not exist for the same reasons? How can they be identified? Do cities announce them?

I am familiar with the "traffic cameras". My city and all surrounding cities have installed them at every busy intersection. They help police keep traffic moving and pose no direct threat to drivers - video can be used indirectly in a court, of course. So, I do not worry about these units.

They just dont seem to be

They just dont seem to be popular in the US. I have seen a few places that have permanent radar controlled speed signs but thats it really. I just dont think the public here is ready to buy off on speed enforcement by camera just yet. Give it a year or two.

popular?!?

I don't think they're overly popular anywhere smile)

There's a description at http://tinyurl.com/2zt2xl (and a database of the UK's 10000+ cameras...)

Here in Atlanta area, they post a radar camera sign but it is to warn people that there is a police officer hiding around the corner to take your money.

Searched for speed camera but

I was wondering about speed cameras myself. I have a speed camera POI that I found on the internet but it is very small. Why don't we have a speed camera POI here?

In my area (S.F. bayarea) I have driven past a few "photo radar" signs and on the highways there are "Radar enforced" signs. Are they just signs to scare people into driving slower?

One last question, new electrical speed limit signs are showing up around here. They display the speed limit and also your speed. I've even seen some flash on and off when you are going over the speed limit. Does anyone know if these have cameras in them?

I first guess is nope

I first guess is nope, no cameras. They usually dont put up the signs that show your speed if they want to collect your money. They just put up the cameras and collect money. I believe that the ones in the UK just sit at the side of the road and collect money. No sign no nothing. Also if they are going to start doing stuff like that it will make it to the local media quickly.

There would be a huge number

There would be a huge number of cops with nothing to justify their jobs.

San Diego East County Red Light

Legal (Privacy) Issue?

It’s probably not allowed in many places to use camera generated evidence in the court. To make it allowable, the PD may have to make it into local law, which is probably too much trouble to do (opposition from rights group).

Speed limit signs

Are these of the portable type on a little trailer and can be towed to various locations? If so, I don't believe that they have cameras on them. In fact, many of these do not set off my Valentine 1 radar detector.

I called Valentine Radar and they told me that many of these signs use a cheap, off-band radar that is not approved by the FCC for speed-radar.

I think they are used as cheap reminders to slow down. This is just my opinion though.

If the signs are fixed, then I have no idea what they are doing.

They're Coming

Speed cameras are coming to the US, just more slowly than Europe. I live in Montgomery County MD & they are being started this week.
http://www.nbc4.com/news/11229987/detail.html
DC has had them for a while now, both fixed & mobile.

They're coming

Bobby,

My neighbor is a former Prince Georges County officer. He still has family there. On a recent trip to visit his relatives, he noticed that on a particular highway where traffic usually "flies", that day they were all doing little more than the posted limit. His brother informed him that speed cameras were to "blame". Apparently, in Maryland and DC, speed cameras have generated three times the revenue the red light cams have, and as a result, Maryland has decided to utilize them state wide. He only mentioned mobile units, nothing about permanent mounts, and the fact the vans are constantly being relocated. One other thing...the fines from speed cameras are civil, so they have no effect on your driving record or license, but, the fines are supposedly high enough that if you get one, you won't want another. Ten miles over the posted limit is supposed to be the cutoff. Eleven miles over the limit and you've been had.

new but wanting to learn...Thanks, David K.

We had a Speed Camera

We had a Speed Camera program here in Charlotte for about a year then they decided to end it because of misappropriated funds (Cheating the System of Money). to pay state officials high salaries.

What Charlotte did was have several White Vans called "Safe Speed Vans". These Vans would set up in different locations and use a Pro Laser III lidar gun hooked up to a Cam and a Laptop to check speed. Once Your speed was acquired, the Cam would take a digital Snapshot of your Tag and send that info to the computer. The computer would determine if the Motorist was speeding and if so log the information. A few days later you were mailed a ticket along with the photo of your tag.

The Vans moved around a lot so it would be kinda hard to make a poi. You could make a speed poi that would alert but that wouldn't always mean a Cop was around the corner ready to take your picture.

There are Speed Cams that are permanently mounted just like RedLight Cams but these are mostly used in Europe. These Cams are called Multanova's.

If you would like to see some photos I've posted of Safe Speed, here is a link.

Speed Limit Signs

These portable little trailers are parked where there have been speeding problems within the city. They are parked for about 2 weeks. They are to warn drivers they are driving over the speed limit. A few days after the portable trailer has been moved to another location a Motorcycle Officer with his Radar gun will be down the street or road somewhere looking for speeders. Good Trick. The city gets many tickets issued this way. You can't say you wasn't warned...

I know here in Phoenix they

I know here in Phoenix they have them all over 101. That's the only thing that I know

Speed Cams

There was an article in the paper about a San Jose neighborhood, the city had a Photo Radar Camera van setup, last year 7000 drivers receiving speeding tickets. City had to halt the program because the state's vehicle and penal codes don't authorize it, and tickets have been successfully challenged in court.

So now they are issuing warning notes instead while they try to get the state law amended.

The legal problem is that the vans are staffed by technicians from the Dept of Transportation and not police officers. Only police officers can issue speeding tickets.

Photo Radar which captures license plates and driver's face is only legal for Red-Light Runners.

I live In Northern Colorado

I live In Northern Colorado and the local police have unmarked mini-vans that are equipped with cameras and they drive them to different locations each day and park them on the side of the road. If you pass it 5 mph or above you have a ticket in the mail within a week.

Well at least you can't get

Well at least you can't get points for that ticket, at least in VA you can't.

Several years ago, Arlington, Texas, installed a half-dozen speed cameras for about 2 years. They were eventually discontinued due to local citizen protests.

Radar Vans

In CT and MA the state police used to (15 years ago; don't know if they still do) use radar vans parked on overpasses on the interstates. Because drivers would frequently locate those "smokies" to others via (then) CB radios, the vans were often painted different colors on the opposite sides. This meant that the yellow van shooting radar speeds on the southbound traffic was being reported by the northbound traffic as a green van.

not popular enough I guess.

not popular enough I guess. I know in Germany they were all over the place.

I would assume the real

I would assume the real issue is who was driving... How can you fine someone whose car is registered yet they are not the one driving and theft... do you still get fined if someone used your car without your knowledge. I believe there are too many loopholes. Once they buckle it down and make revenues off this there will be a wide range of activists wondering why they are waiting for offenders and not stop it at the car itself. I would hope the american ppl are smart enough to shut down this extortion for money.

I haven't ever seen a "Speed

I haven't ever seen a "Speed Camera". In the DFW area, there are lots of Red Light Cameras though.

speed limit sign

those signs that are towed out to different loacation usualy have the ability to store info so the Police can figure out the best time to send actual enforcement personel out to write tickets.
