Will it work with Tomtom

I did not see that the software would export to ov2 for the Tomtom. if it is not too much trouble would it be possible to add this for Tomtom users?

Thank you very much.

Filefactory.com Problems

Not to take away from your great work WorldDrknss, but has anyone else been having problems downloading from filefactory.com?

I've tried today to download the latest alpha a bunch of times today and I get either site not responding, you can't have multiple downloads going at once (even though this is the only file I'm trying to download), or there's no download slots left on server.

It seems like they are just trying to get you to get a premium membership.

WorldDrkness, is there any chance of you hosting the file on a site that is a little more friendly?

Try:

It's stored in a database, with the ability to export to different POI formats. I will be adding ov2 export sometime today.

Awesome...

This looks great.

Looking good

I attempted to Export a waterfall point. the file was created with NO contents. I assume the contents part is still under development.

You have to click on either a Project Name or State Name to export its content.

The .air file extension does not register on Windows Vista (Adobe AIR)
Issue
When you double-click an .air file after a successful installation of Adobe AIR on Windows Vista, you receive an "unknown type" error and the file no longer has the Adobe AIR icon associated with it.

Reason
The .air file extension is not being registered properly on Windows Vista due to locked file-type association in the registry entries.

Alpha Build 4/Beta 1

This is important so please read
Instead of going to Alpha Build 4, I am going to jump to Beta 1. So there will no longer be anymore Alpha Builds. I am hoping to get Beta 1 released before Christmas. So what will Beta 1 include.

Beta 1:
1.) Will delete any existing database and replace it with a completely new one.
2.) Exporting to TomTom ov2
3.) Exporting to XML
4.) Alert Messages
5.) Moving the "Save Dialog Function" into its proper location on the script.
6.) Working About Page

What is not included in Beta 1:
1.) Exporting to GPX - There is some trouble with setting Namespaces.
2.) Importing*
3.) Handling Graphics and Sounds*

* = These options are in planning, although they may never make it to production.

Still do not know why MS didn't include air in their "Lock Filetypes" since Adobe AIR was out before Vista, but then again I bet it was a move so users would have to use MS Silverlight.

Thanks, that worked.

You can help by downloading Adobe Air (http://www.adobe.com/products/air/) and then downloading and installing (http://www.mediafire.com/?1ngimkgomjt) and provide some feedback of how well you like the program, and was it useful to you.

Wowsers

Better and better WD. Thanks sooo much for changing download sites. The previous one was just a little...uncooperative.

Suggestions: (uh oh, here he goes) Add a little prompt (text) to the "Proximity Alert Distance" so users know to enter feet/miles/kilometers. Which brings up another idea. Since feet/miles are only used in the U.S. you'd probably do the rest of the planet a favor by adding a toggle (checkbox) allowing users to choose between feet or meters or miles/kilometers.

When you get around to filling out the "Help" portion you might want to list all the manufacturer suggested 'hard names' (for want of a better term) such as Garmins "Red Light" that automatically generates a 1320 foot warning and a red warning on the map screen. I believe "Speed Trap" used anywhere in the title generates a different color warning (blue on my 760). There are other 'code words' detailed by Garmin here: http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/creating_custom_po...

While you're adding things to "help" maybe insert an e-mail address you set up specifically for feedback (to be removed eventually) so you don't have to keep coming back to Poi-Factory (not that there's anything wrong with that) and wading through all the responses.

Ah, one more thing. You need an icon of some sort for the desktop/start menu. Maybe a small generic GPS? Something with your initials? Picture of Miss Poi?

Can't wait to actually be able to save a poi to a file and see what it looks like in Excel....

Leaving now...really! wink

Mapping for positive connect

WD
I sent you a PM and some sample code for adding a map for the final geocode. just one more way of verifying the location someone is trying to identify. Todays maps can zoom you down to the street view just as someone would remember the location and see if the Lat and long are correct.

I did pass this along to Jon earlier this fall.

Testing an .ov2 formatted file

WD, nice program! I tried exporting the Maine file in .ov2 format and that worked flawlessly...an ov2 POI icon popped up on the desktop as it should have. However, when I try to open the file in POI Edit I get an 'INVALID ov2 FILE' error message.

To check the error I opened the newly exported ov2 POI in WordPad and I saw the problem - the Longitude is listed first, then the Latitude (csv format). An ov2 file requires the Latitude to be listed first, then the Longitude. The column format was correct though - 3 columns.

It is working and you can create and save a POI file by selecting export>CSV. I did it with the current sample data in the beta 1.1 version and this is what the CSV I saved showed in EXCEL:

-68.0493 44.454 Bar Harbor, ME Acadia (207) 288-3338
-109.565 38.77 Moab, UT Arches (435) 719-2299

Hmmm,

Something's broken with V1 and 1.1 on my machine then. An actual glitch? I figured the export had been disabled.

I was able to save .csv in the Beta release just before V1 but clicking on "Export" in any format for V1 or 1.1 does nothing. I've gone back and re-installed the Beta then uninstalled using the uninstaller (I'd previously just deleted the directory...maybe that messed something up?) then installed V1 and 1.1 into the same directory. When that didn't work I installed 1.1 into an entirely different directory. Still no joy (which is when I figured you'd disabled the export).

Cheers,
John

Beta Build 2.1

The idea behind Beta Build 2 came from BobDee with his suggestion of using maps. So now you will be able to click on a Project Name, State Name, or Waypoint Name then go to Tools and click on GeoCheck. This will open up a new window and display a map with all your points.

Fixed:
OV2 State Export where Long and Lat where switched.

Added:
More Alerts to remind you that you need to select a "Project Name" or "State Name" in order to export its content.

Importing

The Problem with CSV is that there really isn't a standard. But if I would include an import for CSV I would only pull in the first 3 Columns as Lon, Lat, and Name.

GPX does have a standard, but I am currently having problems with gpxx Namespaces. since the application keeps ignoring the Namespace that I set to it, it will be a while before I get to GPX Files.

But importing is one of my plans.

If you download a sample CSV like the Best Buy one you will see that a lot of them use 4 columns of data that will all be displayed by the GPS. If the 4th column is ignored a lot of information such as address and phone info will be gone.

Example:

1st column = -149.88185
2nd column = 61.14454
3rd column = Best Buy
4th column = Anchorage - AK; 800 East Dimond Boulevard; Anchorage AK 99515; (907) 344-4409

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/18592

A CSV file standard has recently been discussed. Please consider the following;

I vote for four columns like I quoted from Hornbyp at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/18592.

"As a worked example:

I could upload a simple, 3 col. csv file containing a list of all the McDonald's in Alaska. Personally, I am not interested in any further data - as I believe I know everything there is to know about McDonald's )

-149.8535,61.2295,McDonalds
-148.5835,65.4479,McDonalds
-161.8235,67.2179,McDonalds

Another user may disagree and decide to add the telephone number. His own Züvi 925T can't dial phone numbers, so he just adds the information to the optional column 4. He is feeling lazy and presents this as arbitrary text - which displays OK for him.

-149.8535,61.2295,McDonalds,"Phone: 01234-5678"
-148.5835,65.4479,McDonalds,"Tel - 02 789(8) 345"
-161.8235,67.2179,McDonalds,"Ring, +1(2) 645, 3435"

A further user has a unit that can dial phone numbers and decides to modify the file, so that POI_Factory software scripts can generate unit-specific files, at some point in the future. In the meantime, he knows that some users will be able to manipulate the data themselves:

(He has to add column headers now, to signify what this new data is.)

Lon,Lat,Name,DEFAULT_TEXT,"Phone"
-149.8535,61.2295,McDonalds,"Phone: 01234-5678","012345678"
-148.5835,65.4479,McDonalds,"Tel 02 789(8) 345","027898345"
-161.8235,67.2179,McDonalds,"+1(2) 645, 3435","+126453435"

In this example, column headers "Lon", "Lat", "Name" and "Phone" would be part of a standard. The modifying user has no idea what Col 4. is supposed to mean and so assigns it an arbitrary name of "DEFAULT_TEXT".

In conclusion, the use of named, known, columns allows optional software to generate new files, that meet a particular user or unit's requirements without it having to try and parse free-form text. The presence of a lowest common denominator (4 cols), allows for a file that will work for most users, most of the time."

Thanks for your consideration.

Concur with 4 columns

Hi All

Great work going on here Thanks

I concur with the approach regarding 4 columns of data being accepted via import.

I would suggest that if you intend to export a csv format that you include all fields with the first 4 fields to include the lat, lon, name, & description/address. The remainder would simply preserve the data.

Magellan strips off the excess data with out harm. I can however concatenate the extra data as I desire for my own purposes and form my own 4th column with the data that is available.

Another quirk for the Maestro series is the name must be unique. If you could provide a switch to append the record # to the name if desired that would be of help also.

A delimiter selector (radio button set) would also make dealing with rare instances where a tab or semicolon etc are used.

Again Thanks for your effort!!

Importing

I have plans to do importing, but not anytime soon. But what I am looking for are your thoughts on the functionality and user friendliness of the application.

3 or 4 columns

I agree we are attempting to come up with guidelines about creating POI and they are based on 4 columns. One of the issues is column 3 and what is contained in this field.

Garmin uses it as a POI name field, Tom-Tom uses it for the name and description. If you build your program around the Garmin use of 4 columns, long, lat, name, description then conversion to a 3 column format would require the swapping of long/lat and concatenating columns 3 and 4.

Having no experience with Magellan, I don't know if they use a 3 or 4 column format as the preferred.

On input of a CSV you could test for the presence of a 4th field and if present use it otherwise the default would be a 3 column format. You would then have to have the ability to swap columns 1 and 2 to handle a Tom-Tom file import.

Usability

WorldDrknss wrote:

  1. For Lat & Lon accept the "°" but strip it on a save. (Makes cut & paste easier.
  2. Clicking on an entry field selects all the current text.
  3. State = list box & allow text all caps length 2.
  4. Mask zip to accept aaaaa-9999 (Canadian codes have alpha characters)
  5. Mask phone (999) 999-9999.

For a few ideas on interface.

I hope this is more what you were seeking.

re Magellan Maestro

The POI Editor requires one to select the column meaning on import of a csv format file.

  • Lon
  • Lat
  • Name
  • Description
  • Altitude

These can be in any order. The operator selects the correct title during the import setup.

Duplicate Named records are skipped however, so a means to ensure uniqueness would improve usability.

Thanks to all for this great Idea/Project.

Just in case you change your mind, it sure would be nice if you could allow an import of more than 3 columns since it is easy enough to reformat files.

You have fields for:NAME,LONG,LAT,STREET,CITY,STATE,PCODE,PHONE,COUNTRY
why not allow a comma delimited file that would use this same number and format.

Just a suggestion in case you change your mind and decide to add to import.

Thanks and keep up the great work
