Beta Build 3 Released (Importing)

I also want to say "Thank You" for working on this app! I've been following the forum posts for the last two days now and you've been very busy as well as accommodating in taking all the feedback and getting it into the build right away.

I think I'm going to download the Beta 3 when I get to my home PC tonight. Can't wait to give it a try!

Yes you will still need to download Adobe AIR.

Yes you will still need to download Adobe AIR.

Some Adobe products install Adobe AIR. I have Creative Suite CS3, and AIR was already installed.

If you download the file and it doesn't look like a generic icon (i.e. shows a brownish box that says .air on it), AIR is already installed.

Adobe air

Thanks, I thought so I had it once but had to have the laptop redone due to a deep virus so have had to reload a lot of different programs I had before.

Some Updates

I initially wanted to skip Beta 5 and jump to Release Candidate 1, but I have changed my mind. Beta 5 will include the hopefully last database wipe. With that being said lets move onto discussing what Beta 5 will include.

In Beta 5 clicking on a "Project Name" and going to Manage -> Project files will prompt you with a new window. This window will allow you to select an image file (bmp) and and audio file (mp3, or wav). Once the "ok" button is clicked the application will create a new directory inside the application storage directory, and move and rename the two selected files.

The new directory will have the same name as your project name, and the files will have the same name as the project name.

Example:
Project Name: National Parks
Directory Name: National Parks
Image File: National Parks.bmp
Audio File: National Parks.mp3

I will also being doing further database changes to also extend to individual states. I may not release Beta 5 until the new year, so enjoy Beta 4 for a while but keep in mind that any existing database will be wiped and replaced with a new one.

1 problem & 1 request

Trying to import a piped file goes to a window that lists only "Text" for "Files of type". I have named my piped file ".txt" & ".text" and neither name displays in the folder I am in. Using version Beta4.

Request the version display in the "Help" window like "Beta4".

The pipe version need to have a file extension of csv. (eg: pipe.csv)

Beta Build 5

Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?nmuz5ndz1nm

Beta Build 5 Includes handling of files.
Click on a Project Name or State Name and go to Manage -> Manage Files

Known issues, bugs, etc
If you delete a project or state project the files will not delete. (This will be added in the next build);

Alert Box needs to be updated.

Saving files that have image and audio files:
In the save as dialog box, if you type in the name and include a file extension (eg: np.csv) the audio and image file will be name as np.csv.bmp and np.csv.mp3. This also applies to when overwriting an existing file.

You do not need to include a file extension, as it just waste time since it will be added automatically.

There will be no more database changes, so now you can begin using this release in production.

Consider change.

Would you consider changing the piped file extension to something other than .csv? The POIloader program will try to load it to the gps if it is in the folder of other pois with an extension of .csv causing a problem. Also a non .csv file named .csv is confusing.

New Software In Works...I’m Stumped???

WorldDrknss wrote:

So while I was sitting around doing nothing today, I decided how great it would be if POI-Factory had its own cross platform application to manage point of interests. So I came to the debate to use PHPGTk since PHP is my language of choice, or use Adobe AIR. In the end I finally decided to use Adobe AIR. So I set to work for about a few hours and have pretty much the structure finish, with some few functions working.

You will be able to add new projects, states and waypoints and also export to gpx, csv and xml. The tree is also organizable, meaning you can move folders around, waypoints around, etc etc. Yes, I stink when it comes to writing descriptions on software I make, so I will provide you with screenshots.

Hi WorldDrknss,

1. I downloaded and installed the Adobe Air app.
2. I downloaded the Latest Build.

When I open the Adobe Air installer app. It asks me to select an installation package. Exactly where is the installation package, it’s asking for?

I’m stumped...

What Next! Geolocating?

Yes that is correct. I will be adding another feature to POI Manager. This new feature will allow you to find Longitude and Latitude right within the program.

How this feature will work:
Click on a Point of Interest
Click on Tools -> Geolocate
Enter Address and click on Search Button.

Then POI Manager will connect to my server and pull the information from Google.

On success the Long and Lat numbers will be returned to the application. From here you can click on the Add button and automatically be inserted into that Point of Interest.

(Since next week I have finals and the week after is Christmas, I will not be releasing a new build until after the new year.)

In fact I am planning on getting acquainted with my GPS and taking tons of pictures, during my winter break.

Geolocating

That is a valuable feature!

Thanks so much for the hard work you're putting into this project.

Great work... small suggestion

Great work, small suggestion: Could you pull in the accuracy as well to help decide if the codes are accurate enough for use, or require extra research (IE: Address, Intersection, Street, City, Zip)

Oh, and with all these updates, when do you sleep......

Magellan 1200 poi files

OK, forgive the noob, but I did at least look through all posts so as to NOT ask a question already answered.
My 1200 uses a US48POI.POI file. Before I go through the download/install/get frustrated because I can't save to a .POI file, can it?
What about a .POI editor? Anyone have a clue?

The official Magellan editor can't save to .POI either.
It also doesn't recognize a 2GB SD card. Anyone managed to get one to work?

Thanks in advance for your efforts.

Obnoxious service

What an obnoxious file serve service! I was assaulted by several demands to install a spyware scanning application which started downloading even though I selected cancel.

Not your fault, of course. But you might consider using a less aggressive or invasive service provider.

Does this work in Mac OS X (10.5.5) Leopard?

Hi WorldDrkness,

I downloaded and installed Adobe Air as well as the latest build and I'm unable to export to "any" format and the "save" selection isn't working either.

I'm using Mac OS X (Leopard (10.5.5) on a Mac Pro (Intel) and I'm not getting the choices "GeoCheck" and Manage -> Manage Files, you refer to in your post.

Thanks for your time.

Is this your first Build?
Manage-> Manage Files = Manage -> Project Files
Exporting you have to click on a project name or state name and go to File->Export-> and choose your format. Then a save dialog box will appear.
The Save option will save to the database, but does not give any prompts
check for /Users/YOUR USERNAME/Library/Preferences/main/Local Store/poimanager.db

I will add a description next to the code.
eg: 0 - Unknown location

The strange thing is I knew you wanted this, and was going to put it in last night, but I fell asleep before I got to it.

This are the new screenshots that will will give you a glimpse of the features that are provided within POI Manager: The screenshots are actual projects that I am current working on or updating from POI Factory.

Now my request... could you possibly place a port-a-pottie link/screenshot within your program so I don't have to get up and stop reading about these new features?

Lol, I know what you mean.

an .ov2 ooooops!

WD, there’s still a problem with the .ov2 files and POI MANAGER and I might be the culprit!

When I create my own POI’s using POI MANAGER I’m able to export them in .ov2 format to my desktop without any problems, but when I try to open the files using POI Edit I still get an error message. I also tried exporting a few of your National Park files in .ov2 format with the same results.

What I discovered upon opening some existing .ov2 POI’s using POI Edit was that the format used is DESCRIPTION – LATITUDE - LONGITUDE; when I read the files that I made with POI MANAGER in WordPad I noticed that the format used is LATITUDE - LONGITUDE – DESCRIPTION. Therein lies the problem, the correct format for .ov2's should be DESCRIPTION - LATITUDE - LONGITUDE. I hope that this problem can be fixed without having to do a major program redesign.

I apologize for giving you that incorrect/partial info in my earlier post. sad
