Nuvi660 Questions

Hello....I am a newbie to GPS.

I own a NUVI660 and have two questions:

1. In "Extras" under CustomPOIs I want to remove all of the POI's I have loaded? How do I do that please?

2. Does the Nuvi have the capability of attaching mp3's to a POI?? I have gone through the procedure in detail of writing a simple .csv file and placed it together with a .bmp and .mp3 file into my POIcollection folder. They all have the same name as instructed. I get the alert for the POI ok and the Nav's 'bong' sound but not the mp3 sound which I was expecting. Any ideas please.

Thanks

Bern

Do it this way

1. In "Extras" under CustomPOIs I want to remove all of the POI's I have loaded? How do I do that please?

Launch POI Loader and choose the options to delete your POIs.

2. Does the Nuvi have the capability of attaching mp3's to a POI??

Make sure your mp3 files and the corresponding POI files are named exactly the same and in the same folder.

Nuvi660 Questions

Thanks for your reply but….

(1)I did that but the POI’s remain in “Extras”

(2)The 3 files are in the C:/Garmin/POIcollection folder and yes they are all named identically.

(3)The .csv, .bmp & .mp3 files do not appear at all in the GarminNuvi(H:) drive. I do notice that there is a poi.gpi file in the GarminNuvi(H:)/Garmin/POI folder… so perhaps they are in there although one cannot read that file. Also a poi.gpi file appears as well in the GarminNuvi(H:)/MP3 folder ???????

(4)I transferred via POILoader the files to an SD card on the Nuvi and there is a poi.gpi file on that card in the folder Garmin/POI.

I just cannot see where the problem is?

Delete all POI.gpi files

Delete all POI.gpi files on either the unit or the card. This is the file created by POI Loader and it is built from the csv, bmp icons, mp3 and wav alerts, and gpx files on your computer.

Check again for spaces, underscores, misspellings, etc.

None of the source files (csv, bmp, mp3, wav, or gpx) files should be on the unit or the card; they stay on the computer and a new file (POI.gpi) is built and placed on the unit or card, overwriting any previous version on that same drive; you can have POI.gpi files on both the unit and the drive and the GPS will add them together under EXTRAS/Custom-POIs. Don't know how you got a POI.gpi file anywhere other than the Garmin/POI folder on either the unit or the card, unless you pointed to that folder as a custom destination. Either way, delete all POI.gpi files.

Delete it.

Nuvi660 Questions

Thank you so much …. Seem to be getting somewhere now. I deleted all the poi.gpi files and all went well apart from a few dozen speed alerts which I had downloaded from the internet and installed on the Nuvi660.
I used POILoader to delete those POI’s but they are still there ???

Is there any way I can get rid of those too?

I will then go back to square 1 and restart the process of writing 3 simple files and see how I get on.

Thanks again for your help.I am learning a lot from this thread.

Where are the files? In the favorites? Or in favorites?

Which POI are you trying to delete?

The unit, and you don't say which one you are using has factory loaded POI. You cannot delete these. The only ones that can be manipulated are the custom POI loaded with POILoader.

In what form were those POIs provided? If they were a file named xxx.gpi and you merely copied them to the unit or card, just delete them. All gpi files need to be deleted. Am I correct that you are using a Windows computer (not a Mac)? The Mac puts deleted gpi files into a trash folder and the unit continues to see it until you empty the trash while the unit is connected to the computer.

He said in his original post that he is using a Nuvi 660 and that he's trying to get rid of speed alerts. No speed alerts are provided by the built-in POIs.

Also, agg9900 asked "Where are the files? In the favorites? Or in favorites?" Favorites don't alert.

Thanks

For: agg9900 ….
I am using a Garmin Nuvi660
They are in “Extras/Custom POIs”….I downloaded them from the Internet and they were automatically inserted into the Nuvi ??
I cannot trace the name of the file(s) which might enable me to locate them on the Nuvi660

For: a_user …. From the above please note that these were not factory loaded.

?????

Bentbiker: Yes I am using

Bentbiker:

Yes I am using Windows.

As I say the Speed Enforcement Zones were automatically downloaded to the Nuvi660 direct from the originating source.

Thanks

Look on both the unit and the card for any files with a gpi extension in the Garmin/POI folders -- and delete them. If they exist in any other form, I'm at a loss and you would have to go back to that site to find out how to delete.

Nuvi660 Questions

Thanks again…
In the Garmin/POI folder there are 5 .gpi files i.e. FranceCyclops Sample_010207.gpi etc. etc.
I deleted a Benelux one ….hope that is not a disaster.

And there is one last one which is named “sez.gpi” ----- I wonder if that could be the culprit?

Can I delete the entire contents of that POI folder?

Any gpi file is a POI file and can be deleted. If there are any files with different extensions, I would not know what they are.

custom poi's

sounds to me that you loaded poi files from the internet without using poi loader. If thats the case these files would have to be deleted from the nuvi
unit. The file name would have to be known. Be careful not to delete any garmin files as you will destroy the maps.this would require sending the unit back to the factory.

In the POI folder (On the

In the POI folder (On the Nuvi 660) there is only one file and it's name is: POI.GPI

In the gpx folder there is only ONE FILE and it's called: CURRENT .GPX

Those are the ONLY FILES that come on the unit from the factory.

I have my entire Garmin backed up on my computer and this is what I show listed after backing it up straight out of the box.

The units in Europe come with a preloaded speed camera database as evidenced by the file name posted.

If the user does not want the speed cameras on the unit, then the .GPI file can be moved off the unit onto a computer.

You may well be correct, but note that the OP said:

Thanks to all.... yes the offending file in the Garmin/POI folder was sez.gpi. I deleted it and all is clear now. Soi I start over again having learned a lot from you all. Thanks

One final point .... as I mentioned in previous communication I deleted a BeneluxCyclops .gpi file from that folder accidentally.
What effect if any could that have? Are those files connected with the installed Maps??

A gpi file is a POI file and a POI file only. You have deleted "BeneluxCyclops" POIs, evidently, but nothing else. I'm sure you can get it back if you need it -- either from Garmin or someone here.
