Nuvi 270 As A Gift Question

I got one of those 270 freebies from Discover and intend it to be a gift for someone out of state. Is it a bad idea to go ahead and setup the GPS with my local data, or should the GPS be left in virgin status? It's going to be a good month or more before giving it. Thanks.

Depends

If you were going to be the recipient of such gift, what would you prefer? That may be a guide in taking a decision.

Leave It In The Box

Just leave it in the box. If you turn it on and acquire satellites that will be the "activation" date shown when your friend goes to register the unit.

Not to mention, would you want to receive a used gift?

New condition

I'd leave it in the box in new condition. If they need help with it, you can always point them to this forum!

I have a nuvi 270. Tell the person to check the maps (US/European) on the unit when they open it to see if both are 2009. If not, then after registering the product, see if the update(s) are available free on the Garmin website. The 270 comes with a pamphlet of a manual, so the person is going to have to get up to speed using the POI Factory to use all the features. This unit will play wav files once properly set up as alerts.

I immediately plugged it in the first day, but stopped at the setup for the country selection. Now what?

That (country) must be for

That (country) must be for the first initial setup....and probably only needs to be done once.

Once that is done, to get to the maps, pick tools (wrench icon), settings, map, then map info to see the maps on the unit.

If you are giving this as a gift...do you also have a USB cable with the unit (which did not come with my 270, but I had to buy it separate) to allow communication between a computer and the 270 to bring across custom POIs? Did you also buy a SD card and know if your person getting the gift has an SD card reader so they can store some files on the card? The 270 can't copy files directly to the SD card.

Used Gift

If you want them to get a used gift, go ahead and "set it up". I would only do that for my parents, who are technically challenged. Other than family or a good friend who is technically challenged, leave it alone.

Virgin Status

Give it to them "Virgin" with a card offering to help them set it up or update it...Showing them how to do it themselves will no doubt be more valuable..."Teach a man how to fish..And He'll never go hungry" type of thing...

yes give them as you got it.

yes give them as you got it. I know my came open too it wasn't sealed like you buy gramin from other stores tehy come sealed. it was not sealed Also If you have usb cable and charger for razor phone or blackberry phone. no need to buy new usb cable or charger as those works with garmins.

It is a gift to my brother,

It is a gift to my brother, he is by all standards, PC smart and has the readers, etc. I have SD cards and USB cables as spares, so those will be included. I plan a week visiting them in November, so the POI lesson/adventures will indeed be fun witht he advice you guys gave me. What I didn't want to do was set it up with my home location since it's a gift and should be registered to my brother. I also didn't want to screw up the registration time period with the arrival here in Texas will be beyond a month until I actually give it as a gift. I'm not sure if the registration has to be done by a certain time, but if it does not, then I will leave it as virgin.

To close, I kinda wanted to play with it myself, DOH! wink Thanks all! sv

I think Garmin gives upto

I think Garmin gives upto 30 days after you register to update your nuvi as I recently updated 2 of my nuvis. So you should be ok.
