Are there any GPS units out there that will play movies. I have a factory gps in my 4-runner it will only play if truck is in park and the brake is on?

Shouldn't you be watching the road?

For good reason!

Moving ...

You certianly don't want to be distracted while driving. That's why you will only be able to view video when stopped. That is why the new nuvi units with ad-supported free traffic do not pop up distracting advertisements while the vehicle is in motion.

too many distractions

Some try to do too many things while driving...trouble is, they are too busy doing other things to fully concentrate on what they are supposed to be doing.

Some do. I remember seeing the NAV 740 by V7. I believe some Mio models do to.

Why would you want something

Why would you want something like that

Maybe for the passenger?
That wasn't even an answer and it was rude besides being just another question!

Steve asked a question, why do people feel they have to lecture someone rather that just giving an answer, could it be because they don't know the answer to start with? you notice the people that now the answer give it, the people that don't know seem to lecture.. go figure. He just asked a question, if you don't know the answer don't try to give a answer. Just an observation.

in-dash double din combo players can

My Kenwood DNX7100 running Garmin will do it. Most any dvd player/gps/ipod controlling head unit will do it. They have a wire that is supposed to be connected to the parking brake, when the parking brake is set, you can watch video. The simple fix is to just ground this wire and your unit will think that the parking brake is set and videos will play.

As for those who are talking trash, apparently they never sat in Chicago rush hour traffic with nothing better to do than catch up on the wire. hehe.

Seriously though, driving and watching is complicated and you'll get a ticket if you're caught, but it does have its perks at times, especially when you're passenger is a 12 year old.

If you wanted to do this on a factory gps, you'd probably have to figure out which wire is which...but its pretty easy to find factory wiring information on the net if you know where to look.

Not that it needs more

Not that it needs more advertising, but you could use an iPhone to do this, if you want to compromise some on the GPS aspect.

Movies?

Is that a practical idea?

Instead of buying a DVD player I could watch it on the gps and NOT while I'm driving.

.

Anyway, if you want to watch tv while you're driving, use a 17" laptop with a windshield mount.

Yup, that's the best! wink

can't imagine why

can't imagine why they would do a stupid thing like making it difficult to access the movies while you are driving. It's always nice to do a movie when watching the Freeway or Interstate fly by. It gets so boring, especially when the road noise that you get at 70 or 80 mph accompanies the view of the road.

Trouble is...

Trouble is, even if you DO happen to be a responsible driver, there are far to many who wouldn't be. I'd no more like to be on the road with a driver watching a movie than I would with someone who was roaring drunk.

There are too many things distracting drivers from the job at hand these days, and a movie capable GPS just adds to the problem, IMHO. I used to be bad enough when the distracted driver was just trying to drink coffee and eat a donut at the same time... now he's also talking (or texting rolleyes ) on the phone and trying to set a playlist on his iPod too....

The roads are getting more dangerous with every new portable electronic gadget. crying

Don't drive in Iowa

It's illegal to have anything like a DVD or movie or TV in the front seat of a vehicle in Iowa. Stay out! We want to stay alive here.

Audio/Video Podcasts

I use my 350 as an audio device for my podcasts. If it could play the video podcasts I'd be in heaven. Seems like a useful feature for waiting in an airport, taking the train, or even sitting on the beach. The more functionality the better and I'm sure it'll become a standard in more of them.

Of course driving and trying to watch a video is an EXTREMELY horrible thought. Garmin would probably have to put a separate warning button on the screen before playing videos. I'm sure someone would sue them after an accident and say they had no idea it was dangerous.

Another one
