Forced route.

I am on the road today. I will be going to to Lawton VA. to pick up the Auto Train to Florida. I am in Woodbridge NJ for the night. I have driven this route for the last 4 years and I used AAA Maps. The maps still to this day avoid the GW Bridge. So, I wanted to avoid the GW bridge in NY and use the Tapinzee Bridge. As much as I tried by using the detour button it always tried to send me back to the GW Bridge. My 255 went as far as to tell me take a left on the East side of Hudson River and the bridge was 100 feet in front of me. I had it set to the fastest time and no avoidances. Can I make a route by using Google or Mapquest. I know that my nuvi can not do routes, just via Points. Thanks

I should have paid attention in school. I do have the correct Lorton Va. in my Nuvi.

Actually, I can understand how some folks might not get the correct spelling from the way some of us here down South might pronounce it. Lawton would be an acceptable phonetic way to pronounce Lorton depending on where you are. (=;

N41.07016 W73.89460 is the coordinates for the tappan zee bridge. I had to do the same thing from NH to avoid the GW.

Once you set in your route, route to the Tappan Zee Bridge or someplace near there. You will be given the option to add that to your route. You can have one intermediary stop on a trip.
When I want to make several stops or force a route, I save the stop over points as favorites. They will show up in order of distance from your current position.

I think I understand what to do. From my home, I find in my favories "Auto Train" hit go. When it is finished calc.,I find the Tappan Zee Bridge in my favorites and set it as my Via Point.

Bridge and Tunnel POIs
Getting in and out of the NYC/NJ area can be a harrowing experience.
Someone was kind enough to create a POI for both approaches of the bridges and tunnels in the area.
This comes in handy if I want to force a different route- let's say taking the Verrazzano Bridge rather than the George Washington Bridge (even if the GW is theoretically but not really faster). I set my destination and make the VZ bridge a detour.
Just make sure you choose the right side of the bridge or tunnel depending on whether or not you wish to go inbound or outbound. Sometimes this will make a difference in the accuracy and intention of your desired route!
