Frank Lloyd Wright

Anyone know of a Frank Lloyd Wright POI that lists his projects in the Mid-West/Mid-East. Residential and commercial combined would be ideal. Thanks

.

Here's a list.

Some of the links have the coordinates listed on the page.

It might be a place to start.

Here's another list.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I am a huge fan of his work and would love to have a file with all of his projects included. I have at least 4 books and one documentary on video about him.

Thanks cpjanda

That would be great. I have ABSOLUTELY no idea on where to start. Is there a tutorial on creating POI's? Thanks again!!

I think the biggest help

I think the biggest help would be tracking down exact addresses. I will compile a complete list of the buildings and then maybe we can split it up and those that want to help can research addresses.

One possibility

http://www.archiplanet.org/architects/Frank_Lloyd_Wright.htm...

Contains a partial list. The map link brings up what looks like a google map image with the marker containing the address.

I'll keep looking. I'll also help if you want to give me a part of what you find.

I also e-mailed the Frank

I also e-mailed the Frank Lloyd Wright foundation. I'll shoot them another asking for a list or a link. I'll let everyone know what I find.

don't forget

Let them know that POI Factory would supply them a CSV or GPX file for them to post on their sites for their GPS users also.

Miss POI

David Wright

Miss POI I sent a photo listing of the Wright home to share.

MLS has had many server problems lately, so be patient and try the link off hours when the server load is light. I tested it tonight when service was restored with my isp.

Having been to Fallingwater near Ohiopyle PA, there is no street address. The posted directionson the Fallingwater web site will get you there, but without a GPS to get the location, it's best described as "approximately 10 miles north of ..."

Eh!

Maybe some owners prefer privacy to notoriety.
Not all homes of FLW are open like Fallingwater, nor should they be.

F.L.W. has some of his early work in Mason City, Iowa - including a Hotel that is currently under restoration/renovation. In most writings about F.L.W.'s work, his time in Mason City is mostly overlooked. And yes, it's the same town that is the real-life "River City" from the musical "The Music Man".

non accessible

Some of them are gated. You can't see much anyway. Most people who liked his style have read books and know where the accessible ones are. I see new ones at least to me quite often. They were usually built by affluent people. I've seen them in OK., IL., IA., MO. These are homes.

I also would like to see the privacy of residents being respected. One of our users is in contact with someone that can get us a list of homes that are ok to list.

What must it be like to live in a work of art? I suppose I'd wake up one morning and not notice how extraordinary it was, but it would take me a long time....like working in the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory, where I'd never lose my taste for the Homemade Vanilla!

Wright houses

There are several F L Wright homes here in Buffalo, NY. The Martin house that is listed is owned by the University of Buffalo and is open for pubic tours. The web site for information is www.darwinmartinhouse.org.
The Martin' summer home is on Lake Erie about 15 miles South of the city and is owned by the State of New York and is open for tours. Both of these sites are under going renovation. The city home is nearing completion.
The Larkin complex was destroyed by fire in the early fifties and is gone. I will get the addresses of these sites for inclusion in the list.

I saw an interesting special on TV about a family that lived in a FLW house. The downsides included people coming by to gawk at the house, small bedrooms, and non-standard everything (maintenance nightmare). But, other than that, it sounded like they enjoyed it.

Back on topic, I've started a FLW POI project. I've got all the works and cities but only a few of the addresses (is going to take some digging on the web). Would be happy to collaborate with someone on this.

Frank L. Wright

I live near the town of Oak Park IL. this town has the claim to fame as having the most FLW homes I belive there is 25. Here is the web site with tons of info and addresses to the homes. Some open to the public. If there is anything I can do living near Oak Park let me know!

Frank Lloyd Wright POIs

Is anyone still working on the FLLW POIs? A while ago someone noted that some of the buildings were difficult to find because they had no address. Let me suggest the book "The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright: A Complete Catalog" by William Allin Storrer. It lists every one of Wright's built works, with addresses and exact longitude and latitude information -- and of course pictures and descriptions of each building. This is an essential resource for anyone looking for FLLW buildings, until the POI project is complete.

Heck, I'll just drive down

Heck, I'll just drive down to Oak Park and start mapping them for you now that the rain has stopped!

who knew?

I didn't think there was a Wright building within 300 miles of me, but after seeing this thread I started poking around and discovered I somewhat regularly drive through a city with 2 Wright houses! This will be a cool poi when it's done. smile

I think is is a great POI.

I think is is a great POI. One the buildings in the company I work for was designed by F.L.W. It is very cool to see. If someone is building a file I can provide co-ordinates as it is very open to the public.

Taliesin - Southwest Wisconsin

I was born and raised in southwest Wisconsin about 30 miles from where FLW was born. In grade school we would take field trips to Taliesin. Guess when I was a little kid it just didn't mean as much as it does when one gets older.

Like Sunshine

FLW's projects pop-up in unexpected places. MY fall moto trip to Nebraska has turned one up, along with railroads and cowboys. Northern OK, oil and gas country, has his skyscraper office downtown.
Oak Park is a mecca even from the sidewalks. I will get started on the coordinates on my bike trip..09/09.

May I inquire how far are you?
I have a unfinished 413 home list which contains the addresses and coordinates of 196 and am filling in the rest slowly .

Taliesin West, Scottsdale, AZ

Taliesin West is at 12621 Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ. Open to the public and they charge for the tour.

Scottsdale AZ.

My daughter lives close by there and I have been there twice. It is the best place to learn about his works.
The previous book about the locations of the homes in my opinion is not up to par with
Frank Lloyd Wright Field Guide by Thomas A. Heinz 2005 ISBN 0-8101-2244-8.
It contains the same list but also has a small map of where each is with the address and the photos are in color.

I shelved this one because of the privacy issues that were discussed above.

Did anyone ever come up with a list of "OK" homes to list?

Privacy?

I am not sure living in a Frank Lloyd Wright home gives that person complete privacy. I have 2 books that detail each house, address, map, photographs and detailed description of updates to the house or building. Some of the descriptions tell of people wanting to do great changes to their property but public outcry made them change their mind.
Wikipedia has a great list of the homes and locations and sites that used to have FLW homes or buildings on them with reference on Google Earth.
The only privacy issue I see is that people do not trespass on private property. This is no different than Google Earth street view camera shots. Anyone can drive down public streets and photograph without punishment.
When I get done I will post a list on my website and anyone who wants it can do whatever.

FLW stay

I just came across the Duncan home which was FLW's response to prefab houses and was moved from Lisle, Illinois to Pennsylvania and now can be booked for an overnight stay for $425 a night at: http://www.polymathpark.com/
Coordinates N 40.12660 W 79.42881
The house cost $15,000 to build.
They have several other homes there.

Frank Lloyd Wright

The next time I go through Spring Green I'll stop and get some coordinates. There is also a commercial building in Richland Center that I think he had a hand in designing.

Follow up

A follow up on my prior post. Kind of interesting, it seems that he was ahead of his time.

On June 8, 1867, Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Richland Center Wisconsin. He eventually became one of the most renowned architects in the world, and is said to have found much inspiration for his work from the beautiful hills and bluffs in and around Richland Center.

Wright’s A.D. German Warehouse, an imposing brick-clad structure, stands immediately adjacent to downtown. A high band of concrete frieze designed with Mayan influences tops the structure. This unique “Mayan” fortress, built in 1915, remains an important link with Wright’s later pioneering use of concrete cast-on-site architecture.

The building rests on a cork pad providing shock absorption and stability. Wright later used similar construction when designing the famed Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. It no longer stands, but the A.D. German Warehouse does! It is now the only structure of its kind left.

Partially done

I finally received a book I was looking for a while " Die lettischen Divisionen" in German at a reasonable price so I am putting Frank on hold until I get done translating it to English. Might take a while since I do not read or speak German.
For those who want a go at it I uploaded it to one of my websites as text so one can load it to EXCEL and continue.
http://latvietislatvija.com/Frank_LLOyd_Wright.txt
It has 252 of 340 done and all one has to do is enter the coordinates of the rest.
The one star after the name means that it is visible from public domain places (sidewalk, street, alley, etc)and two stars mean that tours may be given as of 2005 information. The date is when it was finished. Trespass at your own risk for some places have electronic surveillance equipment.
Have fun.

Thank you kurzemnieks

Thank you for posting this weblink. I just loaded in the 252 locations. Might check a few out tomorrow in the Oak Park area.

Is anyone going to finish the remainder of the 340?

Oak Park

Oak Park has a number of Wright homes.

Imagine what he could create in this day and age.

tags

Cool, I'm glad to see someone put this together, thanks. It might be useful to add a tag to each entry so you can easily search through all the FLW buildings to find the one nearest to you. Maybe just append "FLW" to all the building names.

FLW

Thanks very much.

I had the chance to visit several of his projects in PA & Arizona (Taliesen West, if I remember correctly). They were simply fabulous. From my reading about Wright, however, he was no easy guy to deal with on a project you were financing.
