Reading POIs on my Nuvi 750

I have several POIs on my desktop, loaded onto my Garmin's SD card via Garmin's POI loader - seems OK. Every time I turn the unit on, I get a message that asks if I want to transfer the data from the card to the device in case the SD card is removed - I always choose NO. But I then notice that, today for example, i drive for miles and pass definite POIs that I have loaded and nothing comes up on the device - what am I doing wrong?

?

1.) Did you load all your POIs at one time? You must do so because you overwrite the existing file each time you run POI Loader.
2.) What file did not show up?
3.) What do you mean that "nothing comes up on the device."
4.) Did you set an alert?
5.) Did you look under Custom-POIs for the questionable location, and then choose "View Map" to see it?
6.) When you drove past the questionable location, were you in 2D mode and zoomed all the way in? Some models require this to see the icon.
7.) Did you load custom icons? If not, all you will see is a dot.

Maybe...

I am newer to this than I thought - Here's my "steps"...

1) Folder on desktop named Garmin POI
2) Open POI loader
3) Custom Folder/Advanced Option
4) Select Folder = Lexar Media (G-My SD Card)
5) That's It - It says..."Congrats...You just loaded 25000 POIs..."

Then - Each time I turn the 750 on, I get the option to transfer to the device nd I always choose NO.

I have speed traps, red light cameras, 7-11s, to name a few - Do I need to somehow activate these alerts first or when I drive within a range of a 7-11, will the Nuvi give me an alert? I did download the icons for what I have - I guess I also need to DL the audibles too?

Should these be saved on the device itself or on the SD card ONLY?

Sorry for the retardation and thanks

Reading POIs

If you don't want to be prompted to move the POI file to the device, the next time you turn the device on and it prompts you, choose Yes, on the next screen it should list the poi's, select the file and there should be a "skip" option. Skip the poi, then it should give you an option to not be prompted again.

As far as being able to view them, you have to zoom in fairly close in a 2D map view to see them. The alerts will only sound if you are on the road that the location is on, except for the redlight cameras. They alert when you approach the intersection from any direction, not just the direction in which the camera(s) are being used.

Also, make sure the POI file, Icon file and sound file all have the EXACT same name, ie: wawa.csv (poi file), wawa.bmp (icon), wawa.mp3 (sound). If not, it won't work.

As for being asked each time whether you want to transfer data to the unit each time you start up -- If your unit offers no checkbox for "Don't ask me again" on the initial prompt asking whether you want to copy the new data to the Nuvi, you must choose "Yes" (as counter-intuitive as that seems), just to pull up the second prompt that allows you to check a box saying to skip that file for transfer and future prompting. You will be given that option for each new gpi file on the SD card.

If your unit offers the "Don't ask me again" checkbox on the first prompt, check the box and choose "No" to the question of copying the data. You will get this prompt for each new gpi file on the SD card.

Alerts are not automatic unless something sets an alert. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764

If the questionable location was a redlight camera, you should have gotten an alert unless you changed the name. If it was a 7-11, that would not alert unless you ran POI Loader in MANUAL mode and set an alert.

You have to set when you want alert.

Besides making sure that csv, bmp, and mp3 filenames match you have to do something to tell POI loader when to display the icon and sound the alert. That either means including "redlight" in the filename for 1300' alert, or "speed" (and possibly a number) for 36 second alert, or using manual mode and setting a default speed or distance (using radio button that says settings are in the file, even if not).

The most helpful link I found somewhere around here was http://brillharts.com/GarminAlerts/

So far I was just playing around with waysides on my 750, so I manually set alert distance (in feet). Although, someone mentioned 2D mode, the bmp icons do work in 3D map mode once you get them working.

Reading POIs on my Nuvi 750

Am I understanding the linked article correctly that:

1. alerts on POIs in a csv file only alert when the POI is actually on the road/route you are on

2. alerts in GPX format will alert within the set distance in a circle, not just if it is on the road,

or is something more required?

There are lots of discussion threads on the use of TourGuides to get a radius alert. I don't believe that a gpx alone will behave any differently in this regard than a csv.

POI alert screenshot examples

I put up a PDF file showing screenshot examples of what it looks like when custom POI alerts with icons are working at http://efflandt.freeshell.org/POI-screenshots-DJE.pdf

If a custom POI is near something that you also have as a waypoint or endpoint in a route (like from Garmin included POI's), the screen may show more detail (like ramps for rest area).

For non-route circle proximity alert, you need case-sensitive "TourGuide" in the filename and circle spec's in the GPX file.
