Loading maps into MapSouce

I'm a nubie and I bought a Nuvi 750 about 2 weeks ago. I called Garmin and they sent me a map CD US Map Update 2009.

I downloaded the MapSouce ver 6.14.1 and it has the basic map in it. I want to load the map CD onto my computer so it's the same map as in my GPS. When I load the CD, it asks for an 8 digit product code. Well, my product code is only 7 digits long and it won't load the map. I've tried putting in a space, dash, etc. Won't work! I've sent Garmin emails about this but they are rather SLOWWWWW.

Anyone have any ideas while I'm patiently waiting for Garmin to respond?

Call Garmin

It's an 8 digit code, so if you only got 7 digits you need to call Garmin.

Go to my garmin on garmin.com

Maybe

I have both a c/d of maps and mapsource, the MAP c/d has 8 digits,Which are on the back of the cd case, the mapsource c/d has a serial number on the taped to the front of the c/d BUT uses the registration code for your UNIT, which come with the unit and the code when you registered it. Try that and see if it dont get you to where you want to get to.

Thanks for everyone's help

I got an email response from Garmin telling me exactly what I already knew -- that my nuvi 750 has a 7 digit code. They told me to use that! That doesn't work. What a bunch of Idiots.

I called them and after a 30 minute hold, the guy told me that I was sent the wrong map CD. I was sent an update, not the whole thing. He walked me thru the process and told me it uses the 25 digit unlock code since the map on the computer will linked to the same as the one on the gps.

So now to wait a few days for the new CD map so I can try it again.

Something still doesn't sound right

If you just bought a nuvi 750 which I assume has the old City Navigator 2008 map, then the free map update to City Navigator 2009 from Garmin should be the Update, not the Full version. You say it's on a CD, but you mean a DVD, right? And the DVD they sent is the Map Update 2009 City Navigator North America NT, yes?

For what it's worth, my Map Update 2009 City Navigator North America NT has an 8-digit Product Code. You mention a 7-digit code for your nuvi. Are you checking for the code for the DVD Map Update (probably on the back of the DVD jewel case) and not something from your nuvi? And when you install the map from the DVD to your PC, you have the nuvi USBed to the PC, too, yes?

Something isn't right with either what Garmin's telling you or what you're doing, I think. One other thought--is it possible that your nuvi 750 already has the 2009 map? If so, then what are you trying to update?

Good luck. I know it's frustrating, but with luck, maybe someone here can get you up-and-running before Garmin does.

my gps has the 2009 map in it

And I haven't found a way of copying the map from the Garmin 750 onto my computer so that I can use it in Mapsource. So when I call Garmin, the woman sent me a CD/DVD?? Map UPDATE 2009 for City Navigator North American NT. And when I tried to load it, it asked for an 8 digit product number. My GPS only has a 7 digit number. So I couldn't load it onto the computer.

So today Garmin told me that they sent me the wrong map CD/DVD. They are now sending me the whole version instead of the update version. He said I can install that using my GPS's unlock code -- 25 digits.

And it's for using in Mapsource. My GPS already has the 2009 map in it.

Unlock code is on the jewel case

The Unlock code is on the DVD jewel case if it's a retail package. It's NOT on or in the GPS. It sounds to me like you're entering your GPS serial number, not the Unlock code from the Map DVD.

When I got my free 2009 update, it had no Unlock code on the DVD anywhere. I just emailed Garmin and they emaiiled me back the product code. This was an OEM package directly from Garmin, not a retail packaged update. The DVD was just in a cardboard sleeve.

I also bought a retail upgrade package, and the unlock code was on an orange sticker on the jewel case.

Aha!

Gotcha now.

OK, here's the bad news. There is no way (as you've already found out) to copy your nuvi map to your PC. If you truly want a copy of the 2009 City Navigator on your PC, then Garmin is now doing the right thing and sending your the Full (not the Update) 2009 City Navigator NT which will install on your PC...and for that matter, may end up reinstalling the 2009 on your nuvi--this will take a long time so be patient.

I've heard of no one that's gotten a free non-update City Navigator so I assume Garmin's charging you for the purchase.

The good news is that when the 2010 map update becomes available in six months or so, it will update both your PC and nuvi and all that we've said prior to this applies so you'll find it easy to do. Honestly, I think that most of us here would not pay the nearly $100 to add the 2009 map already on your nuvi to your PC, especially since you may end up wanting the 2010 Update that'll come out in about six months at a cost of maybe $60. That is, unless Garmin changes their once-a-year updates to something more often.

Long story short--you now need to wait for your Full City Navigator DVD to arrive in the mail to be able to add the map to Mapsource on your computer. Have fun nuvi-ing! (Except for the bummer of the recent firmware updates of 4 and 4.1, I've had no problems with my 750. I just hope they update the firmware and fix the freezeups and slow speech, etc.)

.

Yes, it's correct that you cannot copy the maps from the GPS unit to MapSource.

However, lots of people have gotten Garmin to send them the DVD for free as long as they have purchased a unit with those maps preloaded.

map was free

but I had to pay $8 for shipping. I thought that was pretty good of Garmin.

you can aslo update

you can aslo update mapsource maps with the downloadable update file from garmin (rmu_cnnant2009.exe) file.

Very good for you and for Garmin's image. Well done. Be sure to ask again if problems arise when you receive and install it. Have fun.

I don't understand...

I don't understand why the current Mapsource map DVD, isn't included in-the-box, when the unit ships.

I just bought a Nüvi 880 and called Garmin, inquiring about the Mapsource City Navigator NT 2009 DVD, because I wanted to load the map into Garmin's "Road Trip.app".

The CS Agent told me they would ship it to me, for a shipping price of $15.00. When I told him that Garmin had shipped the Mapsource City Navigator NT 2008 to me for my newly purchased, at the time, Nüvi 670, there was no shipping charge.

Long story short, after consulting with his supervisor, they're going to ship the DVD to me, free of charge.

Unfortunately, The Mac version of the Mapsource City Navigator NT 2009 DVD is on back order and won't ship for about a week.

Anyway, all's well that ends well...

Tailspin

Sullivan's Law: Murphy was an optimist!

I got MapSource working

with the new City Navigator NT North America 2009. Their DVD instructions aren't the best, but with a call to Garmin's help desk, I was able to unlock the maps.

Thanks to all of you for your help.
