Chit Chat Thread for the week of September 22, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Lights in Houston!

WOW, today is 16 days after Ike and I just got my lights and INTERNET about 3 hours ago. We are so excited to have air conditioner (nothing like 90 degree temps with no fans or AC), lights, refrig., cable tv, microwave, home alarm system, and internet! I cannot express my excitement.

I loaned my Garmin to my oldest daughter so she and her family could leave town for Ike. Now she is in love with it and does not want to give it back. Well, at least I know what to give her and her husband for Christmas this year. smile

Let her keep your Garmin for her present and that will be an excuse to have to go out and buy yourself the newest and greatest. Everybody will be happy.

In the east

I just got back to Nebraska from Cape Cod. It was really nice when I was there. Went whale watching in Provincetown. Saw 8 whales who were really just playing around. One had to have eye contact. Another waved at us when we went back to land. Now I hear that they have had rain and flooding.

Champagne & Eggs Benedict

Believe it or not I heard a couple of people in a friendly argument at a tavern last Friday about Buddhism and the importance of the Winter Equinox. I guess neither of them knew the religion as well as they thought if it supposed to be Summer/Winter Solstice and Spring/Autumn Equinox.

On the other hand, Wikipedia doesn't make this too easy to sort out. According to that source:

"Summer solstice and winter solstice are the most common names. However, these can be ambiguous since seasons of the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere are opposites, and the summer solstice of one hemisphere is the winter solstice of the other. These are also known as the 'longest' or 'shortest' days of the year."

Oh well, shouldn't be talking sex-religion-politics in a tavern in the first place!

The September Equinox
September 22, 2008 at 11:44 am EDT

Autumnal Equinox for the Northern Hemisphere.
Vernal Equinox for the Southern Hemisphere.

The December Solstice
December 21, 2008 at 7:04 am EST

Winter Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere.
Summer solstice for the Southern Hemisphere.

The March Equinox
March 20, 2009 7:44 am EDT

Vernal Equinox for the Northern Hemisphere.
AutumnalEquinox for the Southern Hemisphere.

The June Solstice
June 21, 2009 at 1:45 am EDT

Summer Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere.
Winter solstice for the Southern Hemisphere.

For years, every winter or summer solstice, figured according to zone time, a friend and I would get together at that hour for a celebraton consisting of champagne and eggs benedict. Easy to prepare, and a real special occasion when it occured in the wee hours of the morning.

He was the same martini-drinking friend who took up smoking late in life because he hated to think of dying with a perfectly good set of lungs.

Cheers!! laugh out loud laugh out loud

I have decided to pull the Political thread off the site. It has degraded from thoughtful discussion to a bash fest. I would like to see level of passion put into more productive positive areas of the site.

I have found a site for those of you that enjoyed debating and would like to continue: http://www.debatepolitics.com/

Please keep it here and not in this forum. We tried it and it didn't work.

Miss POI

Thanks for the link to that other place. And, I think you are right on keeping politics at arms length at the Factory.

Watching this issue closely...

Not only do we have higher gas prices but we are lucky to find gas. Many stations are out of gas and long lines form at stations that do have gas. The news reported it may be mid October until we are back to normal. The cause - Ike.

Any other parts of the country having gasoline shortage problems?

Oh Boy!! Mid October? Well, it won't be until mid November that we migrate from north to south. I made the same run driving a 26ft truck full of lumber and water after Katrina, running into gas problems--or NO gas problems--all the way. I was so afraid of being stuck without gas on the road that I drove from MA to Ft. Payne AL before I stopped to grab 3 hours of sleep before hitting the road again.

When I was a kid, folks lived close to their jobs. Now, that is not true. So gas is a very critical issue. The situation in Atlanta has been on the news a lotthis last week. Maybe they will do better than the midOctober estimate. Hope so.

....and I think it is still raining off and on. My two dogs are getting cabin fever, they don't like to get their feet wet. Friends of ours live on their sailboat up at Newburyport MA, and their boat is tied to a floating dock. Sitting up very high they say. The Merrimac River is rough under normal conditions as it dumpsinto the ocean, so I'm sure it is not a good place for yachting this week.

We are a little north and west of Boston, just got some wind and rain. I thought I left hurricanes behind on the Gulf Coast, I wonder if I am a MAGNET for the things.... question

Chicago sub$4/gallon gas

Quote:

Just got back from running some errands. Noticed that the tank was a little less than half full, so I thought it might be a good time to fill up. A BP station down the street from me had regular for $3.55 a gallon. Another BP station about a couple of miles from the house is consistently lower, so I just knew if I went there the price would be a few cents per gallon lower. I ran my errands and stopped by the normally lower priced station. $3.81 per gallon!!! shock I drove back to the other station and filled up for $3.55 a gallon.

What is wrong with this picture? How can two company owned stations have such a wide price disparity? I just don't understand.

What has me most confused about the topic is that cost of gas used to be less in the suburbs as compared to the cost of gas in the city. I used to make a point to fill up when I was out running errands in the suburbs.

However, this past week, the corner gas station is actually at least $0.15/gallon less than the ones in Evanston or Hoffman Estates -- at least for Regular.

It's a bit sad, but I got excited about sub-$4/gallon gas sad The oil companies sure have us trained well.
