Chit Chat Thread for the week of September 22, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Say good bye to Summer or hello to Spring

The Autumnal Equinox

September 22, 2008 at 11:44 am EDT

On the equinox, the sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west. This is true for both the fall and spring equinoxes. So on two days of the year you can find the exact cardinal directions of East and West by using the sun.

The autumnal equinox (FALL)for the northern hemisphere is the vernal equinox (SPRING) for the southern hemisphere.

As the north pole begins to tilt away from the sun, cooler weather comes to the northern hemisphere because the sun is no longer giving its direct rays to this part of Earth. In winter when the north pole is tilted its farthest away from the sun, we have the least amount of daylight hours and the coldest weather. You can even notice the angle of the sun and how it never gets as high above the horizon.

Happy Monday

Have a great week. With or without house, power, water or whatever.

Solstice versus Equinox . . .

Believe it or not I heard a couple of people in a friendly argument at a tavern last Friday about Buddhism and the importance of the Winter Equinox. I guess neither of them knew the religion as well as they thought if it supposed to be Summer/Winter Solstice and Spring/Autumn Equinox.

On the other hand, Wikipedia doesn't make this too easy to sort out. According to that source:

"Summer solstice and winter solstice are the most common names. However, these can be ambiguous since seasons of the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere are opposites, and the summer solstice of one hemisphere is the winter solstice of the other. These are also known as the 'longest' or 'shortest' days of the year."

Oh well, shouldn't be talking sex-religion-politics in a tavern in the first place!

I would avoid Wikipedia as it is considered an unreliable source. Most colleges or businesses will not accept the Wikipedia reference. I understand it has a lot of information, but because anyone can edit it, it becomes unreliable.

I know it's early in the season, but the Pat's sure didn't look good Sunday. We went to the game, the best part was the tailgaiting and the 80 degree weather.

I never saw fans stream out at the end of the third quarter....ever. We stayed 'till the very painful end.

Yesterday's FM radio reception

Did anybody else in the east (Ohio and parts nearby) notice that yesterday's FM radio reception was really bad. Stations that usually come in very clear and strong were full of static, and seemed to be bleeding into and out of other stations. This happened to me yesterday afternoon, while traveling for a good stretch of I-90, and around the house in Cleveland. Today, all seems back to normal.

I've seen it before, but the sight of a manned Spacship, crossing the sky at 17500 mph, never fails to impress!

Thanks Phil, enjoy watching these flyovers also. My favorite was a recent one with the space station followed by the space shuttle, both visible in the same sky. Our local weatherman was providing the updates on these flyovers. I knew they existed on the web, but never took the time to find the links. This will be very helpful!

I agree, I have never seen anything like it. I have seen the remnants of lots of hurricanes cruise up the Ohio Valley, but never one come through Cleveland with 70mph winds gusting to 80mph. North East Ohio is still having scattered power outages remaining today (9/23/08)within the First Energy plant, the CPP plant was 100% within two days of Ike. Ohio was second only to Texas with hurricane damage from Ike.

Around here, we were at 95% of all electric customers without power on Sunday. Restoration could not start until Tuesday when the electrical workers returned from Texas.

And for Wikipedia, the schools I know of will not allow references from there either. Businesses too, if reliable and verifiable information is needed. One of my professors proved that point with several articles. A layman might not catch all the mistakes, however, many articles are full of inaccuracies, some very subtle. (psst - I still find it a good starting place sometimes.)

Upon moving to Chicago, I could never figure out why more people didn't root for both major league baseball teams - they are, after all, in two different leagues. Yeah - I still like the Indians, no matter how good(bad) they are. sad

No more political debates at POI Factory

I have decided to pull the Political thread off the site. It has degraded from thoughtful discussion to a bash fest. I would like to see level of passion put into more productive positive areas of the site.

Miss POI

In the last couple months I have seen entire threads deleted by Miss Poi when discussions have gotten heated; she has also removed or changed member’s postings from a thread to make them more politically correct.

My question is where will this all end?

If offending postings has been removed or amended, if members are being asked to change their name and avatar, what is next?

Will some of the POIs files we have submitted suddenly deem offensive and removed?

Censorship wherever has been tried never improved the community, being a country or a forum silencing dissent goes against what makes a community.

I know what many will say, that this is a forum dedicated to GPS and not political discussions, that is all well and good but the thread “2008 Presidential election discussion thread” was started by the owner of the forum knowing full well what kind of discussions such thread would generate.

To all the ones I met, wish you happy GPSing and don't forget to vote.

You are correct. This is indeed a forum dedicated to GPSing, and more specifically, Points of Interest for that avocation. Miss POI and JM are the pwners of this site, and have absolute authority to control how this site is used. First Amendment freedom of speech does not apply here. When we signed on to this forum, we agreed to certain terms and conditions, one of which empowers the owners of this site to monitor and control content. I accept that. And I am sure that the vast majority of the other users - paid subscribers and otherwise - also accept that condition. I believe that Miss POI and JM have been very generous and lenient in the amount of off-topic exchanges that occur within POI-Factory. But ultimately, if they decide that a thread, or a user name, or any other thing that is happening on this forum is detrimental to its harmony and usabilty, they not only have the right, but the responsibility to make whatever change is necessary to maintain the integrity of POI-Factory. I personally applaud their efforts.

And as a side note, the Presidential Election thread was not started by Miss POI. It was created because of a couple of postings in the Chit-Chat thread of a few weeks ago.
