Chit Chat Thread for the week of September 22, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Autumn

Speaking of trees - Houston has/had a lot of really old Oak trees. We lost a good many of them that were a good 2 to 3 foot in diameter and a lot of them fell across power lines that lead to the almost total grid failure. We lost 93% of the power grid. If it would have been 100% a good many States would have been affected. A lot of the large trees fell across major roads which compounded the traveling in Houston along with no power to the traffic lights. What a ride this Hurricane IKE gave us. Wow! We still have about 26% of customers without power which could be that way until sometime in November.

a good book.....

Help teach young children about GPS with "Fun with GPS" by Donald Cook.

For the millions of GPS owners who love their GPS units but don't know all they can do with them, this fun guide shows that a GPS can do a lot more than just calculate a location. Dozens of illustrated examples show how a GPS can be attached to a multitude of devices, including dogsleds, race cars, hot-air balloons, windsurfers, pet animals, ski racers, hockey players, and sailboats. Each example includes maps and photographs to inspire hobbyists, airline passengers, athletes, animal lovers, drivers, teachers, and students to track and map their activities. How to incorporate GPS mapping technology in the classroom in order to reinforce science, math, and geography curricula, provide the groundwork for project-based learning, and show students that their schoolwork is important and relevant is discussed.

I don't need to check the node. I can tell you that Miss POI created the thread after I replied to a political posting in the Chit-Chat thread. And I am not sure what your point is by locating that. My point still is, if you want to play in someone's sand box, you've got to play nice and play by the rules they set up.

And that's all I've got to say on this topic. Anything further is simply argumentative and fruitless.

Is there a "GPS for Dummies" or "Complete Idiot's Guide to GPS" on the market yet? If not, we have a few members in this forum that could write those books. An acquaintance of mine has published in the "Dummies" series, and has done very well for his efforts.

Just a suggestion to our more learned members (and you know who you are!).

Actually, there are books like this - I check them out of the public library frequently.
The GPS for Dummies book has been out since about 2004, with a new edition being released in October: http://www.amazon.com/GPS-Dummies-Computer-Tech/dp/047015623...
I'm not sure about a "Complete Idiot's Guide" but I've read the guide to Geocaching - which as some GPS in it.

I agree that some of those in this boards membership could do quite well. grin

Arugmentative and fruitless is exactly what got the Political thread bounced!

This site is designed to help people ... for people to find answers to their questions, to help answer other's questions, and to share information and useful POI files.

I'm quite sure Miss POI established the Political thread with the hope that it would serve this same purpose ... someplace for people to raise and answer constructive questions regarding today's political issues. The thread followed the same downward spiral that most mudslinging campaigns do. It's time to get back on track before members don't want to help each other due to personal attacks and political views.

Everyone has always gotten along wonderfully here at the POI Factory ... as long as we don't learn too much about each other it can stay that way!!

Still having 80 degree

Stayed Away

I intentionally never even opened the political topic because I was afraid of what it would become. Apparently, it got a little heated.

The theme of the POI Factory is GPSr's and POI files. Miss POI & JM have every right to keep it on track. I am a member of only a few forums and I picked them for the same reason I picked the POI Factory - friendly, knowledgeable members with a passion for the specific subject matter. The other forums I joined are the same way, they stick to their specific subject. They don't have anything like the "Chit-Chat" topic Miss POI puts up each week, so in that regard, they are more strict.

Keep up the good work Miss POI. Let's stick with the original theme of the forum and share our knowledge of GPSr's with others, period!

In the last couple months I have seen entire threads deleted by Miss Poi when discussions have gotten heated; she has also removed or changed member’s postings from a thread to make them more politically correct.

My question is where will this all end?

If offending postings has been removed or amended, if members are being asked to change their name and avatar, what is next?

Will some of the POIs files we have submitted suddenly deem offensive and removed?
Censorship wherever has been tried never improved the community, being a country or a forum silencing dissent goes against what makes a community.

I know what many will say, that this is a forum dedicated to GPS and not political discussions, that is all well and good but the thread “2008 Presidential election discussion thread” was started by the owner of the forum knowing full well what kind of discussions such thread would generate.

To all the ones I met, wish you happy GPSing and don't forget to vote.

You are correct. This is indeed a forum dedicated to GPSing, and more specifically, Points of Interest for that avocation. Miss POI and JM are the pwners of this site, and have absolute authority to control how this site is used. First Amendment freedom of speech does not apply here. When we signed on to this forum, we agreed to certain terms and conditions, one of which empowers the owners of this site to monitor and control content. I accept that. And I am sure that the vast majority of the other users - paid subscribers and otherwise - also accept that condition. I believe that Miss POI and JM have been very generous and lenient in the amount of off-topic exchanges that occur within POI-Factory. But ultimately, if they decide that a thread, or a user name, or any other thing that is happening on this forum is detrimental to its harmony and usabilty, they not only have the right, but the responsibility to make whatever change is necessary to maintain the integrity of POI-Factory. I personally applaud their efforts.

And as a side note, the Presidential Election thread was not started by Miss POI. It was created because of a couple of postings in the Chit-Chat thread of a few weeks ago.

Which is why this is such a helpful and friendly site

Gas prices. I just don't understand.

Just got back from running some errands. Noticed that the tank was a little less than half full, so I thought it might be a good time to fill up. A BP station down the street from me had regular for $3.55 a gallon. Another BP station about a couple of miles from the house is consistently lower, so I just knew if I went there the price would be a few cents per gallon lower. I ran my errands and stopped by the normally lower priced station. $3.81 per gallon!!! shock I drove back to the other station and filled up for $3.55 a gallon.

What is wrong with this picture? How can two company owned stations have such a wide price disparity? I just don't understand.

Are they really Company Owned?

I have an acquaintance that is an auditor for BP Gas Stations. Only the Company Owned stations. As a matter of fact - they are in the process of "selling off" all company owned stations, and will they will all be franchises. So, there can be, and usually is, a difference in price between stations that are "owned" by BP, and those that are "Franchised" - a little bit of useless trivia for the day... mrgreen

That is indeed interesting. Thanks for the trivia. The highest price we saw on the east side of Cleveland immediately after Hurricane Ike was $3.99 a gallon. The inner city and the outlying areas had gas higher than $4.00 a gallon, but that came down. Most stations in the area are now in the #3.55 to #3.89 range for a gallon of regular.

--

$3.49 a Gallon in Cleveland near west

I went to steel yard common, just yesterday and got of I90/71 at West 14th. saw gas at $3.49 a gallon at a Independent gas station w14th and Clark, pulled in and filled up. Still paying $3.69 in Eastlake

Around here in central NJ gas is like $3.30. But overall there is still a 20-30 cent discrepancy between gas stations of the same brand.

Not only do we have higher gas prices but we are lucky to find gas. Many stations are out of gas and long lines form at stations that do have gas. The news reported it may be mid October until we are back to normal. The cause - Ike.
