I loaded the custom poi for rest areas combined that I found on Poifactory. However, when I select custom pois and find a rest area then view the map it appears I have i icon on top of another. Did my Navteq map that came with my Garmin already have the rest areas loaded? If so, should I delete my custom poi but keep the voice notification? What is going on? If this is the case, then why would there be a custom poi for pois that already come with the maps? Thanks
Proximity Alerts
If you want Proximity alerts and voice notifications, you must use the custom POIs. The pre-loaded POIs won't work with voice alerts.
You'll also find that many Rest Areas in the custom POI file do not exist in the pre-loaded POIs. Yor're better off using the custom POI file.

Not Certain I Understand
Forgive me if I'm not properly understanding your question, but is it possible that what you're seeing are two POIs for rest areas on opposite sides of the highway?
Thank you for your response.
Thank you for your response. How did you know that pre-loaded POI's won't work with voice alerts? Where can I go to learn all these basics without asking 100 questions? Thanks again!
I tripped going up the escalator and I fell for an hour and a half!
You talked about proximity
You talked about proximity alerts and voice but I am seeing 2 icons, 1 on top of the other. Do you think it is because there are 2 rest areas across from each other or can it display the pre-loaded icon and the custom icon together? Thanks

You will also find
You will also find that the actual "locations" of the Rest Areas that are "built in" to the GPS are slightly different coordinate wise.
The coordinates used in the Rest Areas Combined POI file are those of the Entrance ramp off the highway while the built-in Rest Area location's coordinate are typically at the Rest Area buildings location.
The reason for changing the coordinates to the entrance ramps was that Proximity Alert activation was very iffy using the original coordinates because of their distance from the highway.
Also, there are several hundred additional Rest Areas in the Combined file for Rest Areas on US, State, County Highways that are not listed in "Built-In" listing.

that you are seeing the Icon of a Rest Area in the opposite direction travel lane if they are close enough !

I did not notice your post before I posted on the same subject.

You can check the FAQs as well as try a subject search. If you're still not sure, go ahead and post a question, we don't bite.

Point of Interest
Open up the custom POI. If it's a csv file, it should open with Excel. If the file lines are not in order, pick the entire file and do a data sort on it in Excel on the first column. Now.... check to see if the two POIs you are seeing are actually shown on adjacent lines and specify the same thing (opposite sides of the road). If true and that bothers you, delete one of the lines and resave the file.
