Nuvi 7xx 4.00 Firmware FIx

FWIW I was in the KC area today and stopped by Garmin International.
I spoke to the receptionist about the problems I was having and she promptly connected me with a product specialist.
I spoke with Jeffy and he contacted an automotive specialist about the turn issues with 4.00. He informed me that they were aware of the problem and they are working on a fix.
I asked about the issue with not being able to backdate the FW until then and he didn't have an answer. I then spoke with Ryan who connected me to a software Engineer Adam.
He was able to duplicate the backdate issue and is emailing me a way to backdate the fw to 2.2, then you can update to whatever version you chose. He was able to duplicate this as well.
So, after I get what he sends me, I will try it and if it works, I will post It for the rest of you.

I do have custom POI's

I do have custom POI's loaded. The only one I have a proximity alert set for is the Rest Area Combined file. The others are for State parks, camp grounds, and just recently, POI's for Vancouver attractions.
The previous lock-ups I experienced could have had something to do with being in proximity of a rest stop. Once instance I attrbuted to it becoming over heated from being mounted on the dash during a hot day.

I make no guarantees that this will work for you, but it did for me.

I just tried this and I got my nuvi760 back to fw ver 2.90 which seemed to work the best for me.

First goto this site and save the fw version you want to backdate to....

http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/

Then go here and save the zip file to you computer.........

http://www.garmin.it/files/nuvi7xx%20missing%20software.zip

Extract this .zip file and you will get and updater.exe file and a .rgn file.

Now follow the directions below and voila,
your backdated to fw ver 2.2.
Then run the .exe of the version you downloaded from the perry site, and you'll be back to the fw ver of your choice.

1) With the unit off and the USB cable unplugged, slide the switch to the lock position.

2) Now press and hold your finger in the middle of the screen.

3) Then plug in the USB cable which should turn on the unit.

4) The screen will not indicate anything different, except that the standard booting messages will not display. Note: You will have approximately 35-40 seconds to drop the .RGN file onto the Updater.exe before the unit switches over to it's normal Mass Storage Mode.

5) Once you put the unit into pre-boot mode you may have to install the USB drivers before the unit is recognized as a standard USB device.

6) Now drag and drop the .RGN file onto the Updater.exe and that should force the software to re-load

All of your user settings will be restored to factory defaults, so you will have to reset these to your preference when finished.

Philc,

I finally worked up the nerve a day or two ago and tried this with my 750. It certainly looked like it was working--I got a "You are replacing a newer version with an older one, do you want to proceed?" message, to which I said yes. Then I see it say my version 4 is being erased. Then it loads what should be the older firmware. But it must not because after finishing and starting my nuvi, I see that I'm still using v4.0 with its 0.2-mile delayed TTS voice.

Just now (Sunday night), I went back and tried to re-download the zip file again from your link above:

http://www.garmin.it/files/nuvi7xx%20missing%20software.zip

but find that the web page can no longer be displayed. Can anyone else get the link to work today? It may be a temporary glitch--or possibly Garmin has removed it so that the 760 and other v4 Bluetooth nuvis won't disable their Bluetooth by attempting the fix.

One other question. When I did successfully download the zip file a couple days ago--the one that removes my v4.0 but then reinstalls 4.0!--the zip file had three files. Can someone who had the reversion to pre-4.0 by this method check the file names and sizes for me? The ones I downloaded and ran (which reinstall 4.0 for me) are:

075401000250.rgn 8916KB
GUPDATE.GDC 8921KB
Updater.exe 704KB

In following your procedure, I dragged the rgn onto the Update which started the process, erased my old v4.0, then reinstalled 4.0. I'm not supposed to do anything with the GDC file, am I?

Thanks in advance to anyone offering help. For now, it appears that I need to wait for Garmin to offer a new firmware update for me to lose my 4.0. Ugh.

I had this problem at first too. You need to go into the GARMIN directory on your GPS via the computer and delete the GUPDATE.GCD file before you start the rollback process. If you don't, it sees the newer GCD file from the 4.0 install and reflashes that. That's why when you turn the unit back on after doing the rollback it says "loading software" again.

Nuvi 760 freezes

I wonder if this firmware problem is related to the frequent freezes i have experienced

4.0 is still there

4.0 is still there but not listed on their links. I didn't see anything past 4.0, like 4.1-4.9. I wonder why they didn't take it off entirely.

People don't know what the date of the release will be, so it's extremely unlikely they know what time it will be released as well. Best thing to say, is to sit back and wait.

Getting stuck on the rollback

Ok, I managed to follow the first 4 steps. I'm having trouble with step 5. How do I reinstall the USB driver?

Windows "Add new hardware" in the control panel doesn't find it before the GPS switches over to "Mass Storage Mode".

Thanks,

Have you looked at your storage device list when it is plugged in? It may recognize it from the last use. That is, you may not have to re-install the driver.

When I drop the rgn file onto updater.exe, a message box pops up. The header is marked Updater.
The message says:
"Connect your Garmin device to your computer, choose your connection settings below, then press OK"
The connection settings offered below are for com ports 1 through 8.
The drop down box for USB devices is blank.

As soon as I click on cancel the GPS goes into mass storage mode and has no trouble connecting.

Are You Sure

Are you sure you want to rollback to a prior firmware? Because you could do irreparable harm to your unit.

Granted the only reported rollback issue seems to involve bluetooth, but I wouldn't be surprised if the rollback caused additional damage.

Why not just wait another week for Garmin to release the update?

great advice - i was thinking of rolling back to 2.90 , but after reading your advice, i'll do just that and wait. My nuvi 760 still locks up when i try to do any search while within a tourguide alert

Unless you really NEED TourGuides, just turn them off in the menu. That's what I did, and I have had no additional troubles with 4.0.

Well, the fix was supposed have been available last week. We are leaving for three weeks this coming Thursday and I'd really like to get this resolved before starting the trip. Even if the new release were to become available before we leave its doubtful that I'd implement it for fear possibly rendering the entire unit unusable.

The unfortunate part is that V3.1 was working fine for me. I have a 750 which doesn't seem to have issues with a rollback, but I do have issues with v4. The major annoyances are calling for a turn after you've passed it, and when traveling between map segments the map for the segment you are passing into doesn't come up unless the unit is first unplugged and turned off, then restarted. I can deal with the longer bootup time.

Personally, I think that Garmin is going in the wrong direction with the multitude of new products being introduced. I don't know how retailers, especially those specializing in GPS and expected to have most models available, are dealing with it. Garmin is not spending enough time testing before launching the product. This is my second 750. The first was early production and had two major porblems - very short battery life and very long satellite acquisition time. It was replaced by Garmin. The only good thing about that is that the newer unit came with the latest version of City Navigator. I have been a Garmin customer for many years. There was a time when firmware updates actually meant enhanced features as well as debugging existing problems. The next time I upgrade to a newer unit it will only be after giving the product adequate time to mature in the marketplace (and cost a few hundred dollars less).

Another issue with Garmin is v6.14 of Mapsource. It looks nice but is vitrually unusable because of the huge icons and the speed at which it works. I doubt that there are many people who didn't revert back to v6.13. Different issues but at least that was doable.

Bob

Rats.....

Well, I leave early tomorrow morning for a week long work trip. I had high hopes that Garmin would have the updated firmware out before I left but it looks like I'm just SOL on that. I just checked with web updater and it, of course, says I have the most up to date version. Too bad it doesn't offer to roll me back to the one they have posted as the most recent.

Looking At TomTom

I understand your frustration. I too have been a long time Garmin customer, but this latest fiasco has almost sent me over the edge. For the last week I have been seriously looking at returning my 750 and getting a TomTom.

What's really sad is all of this is caused by Garmin. If Garmin focused on fixing the bugs in their existing models, instead of creating new models, they would keep customers. Instead, they continue to push out untested products.

Me Too

I had a 750 for three days before Garmin let v4.0 out of Pandora's Box. I returned it and am torn to either spend less and get a 350 for $198, wait for the 755t but I'm not sure I want to give up $500...or I could get a Tom Tom. I could get another 750 and never update it too.

For now, I'm using my manual GPS, eyes, brain, AAA+Thomas Guide maps. wink

I'd rather have busted Firmware than buy a TomTom wink

I loaded the 4.0 firmware on my 760 back on 8/25 and have been using it daily. Other than a slight delay on turn notification about .3 miles before the turn everything else works just fine. I'm sure Garmin will rollout a new firmware shortly that will fix the problem with 4.0

Strange how some are having problems while others aren't. That one must be driving the software engineers bonkers. Is it additional files loaded onto the nuvi or differences in internal electronics?

Somewhere I read that POIs could be causing the problem, so I deleted the Rest Areas POIs. I did however include some POIs that I'll be needing for my trip in Europe. By the way, I needed to include some POIs because nuvi doesn't show all data stored in the waypoint file as does my 76cs and 76csx. To see whats in the comments field you have to convert them to POIs for the nuvi. After deleting Rest Areas, I saw no difference. It was still calling out turns to be made after I already made the turn. Well, as long as I'm watching the route on the screen I'll get there.

Having been an engineer involved with product development I understand what's going on. Marketing people are ready to release product on an agressive schedule and engineers would probably never release anything until its so well tested that its no longer relevant.

One thing that Garmin has done right is customer service. My III+ and e-trex vista were repaired or replaced many times even after the warrantee ran out. Its been this sort of service that has kept me a loyal customer. My 76cs has been retired but never had a problem. My 76csx has also been very reliable and never needed repair. Meanwhile my original nuvi 750 didn't work properly right from the start, but this time it took quite a while before I found a CS rep who would do anything about it. Likewise the on-line vendor I purchased it from said it was operating normally.

The 76csx was a dramatic improvement over the 76cs. However, I can't see that there will be much that the nuvi 755 will offer over the nuvi 750. It will probably be the same product with a few firmware enhancements. In years past Garmin would have provided such enhancements to existing products at no cost. True, that doesn't enhance the bottom line except that when there are real progressions in product development customers will remain loyal and buy them.

How many people buy a GPS because of installed games or the fact that it has a picture viewer or plays talking books or music or take pictures or is a language translator or is a telephone or arranges blind dates whatever? Extra features just complicate it and they seldom do any of them well.
