Nuvi 7xx 4.00 Firmware FIx

FWIW I was in the KC area today and stopped by Garmin International.
I spoke to the receptionist about the problems I was having and she promptly connected me with a product specialist.
I spoke with Jeffy and he contacted an automotive specialist about the turn issues with 4.00. He informed me that they were aware of the problem and they are working on a fix.
I asked about the issue with not being able to backdate the FW until then and he didn't have an answer. I then spoke with Ryan who connected me to a software Engineer Adam.
He was able to duplicate the backdate issue and is emailing me a way to backdate the fw to 2.2, then you can update to whatever version you chose. He was able to duplicate this as well.
So, after I get what he sends me, I will try it and if it works, I will post It for the rest of you.
Finally a glimmer of hope.
I, for one, will be waiting with baited breath for your feedback. I am quite frustrated with 4.0 and Gramin at this point, given their performance on this update and how they broke mapsource - but I digress.
My Nuvi 760 now fails me for giving meaningfull voice dirrections where is used to do well before. I am anxious to hear more on this. Thanks for taking the effort to stop in to Garmin.
Try using a non-TTS Voice file
If the voice lag is a big issue for you, you might try using a non-TTS voice while we wait for the 4.0 fix. I have found that the non-TTS voice is much more accurate.
Garmin is working on a fix.........
Here is a message I received from Garmin Support after I sent some screen shots of the problems with 4.00..........
Phil, your right. That is definitely not right. I talked to my supervisor and a software support specialist. They both said there is a BUG with the 700 series right now, when you update it. They said there is a firmware update suppose to be coming out. The way they talked it should be within the week. I will check and let you know as soon as it happens. Unfortunately we can't backdate anything with these units. Sorry about this, and I appreciate your patience. I'll let you know something either later today, or the first of next week. Thanks Phil. Have a great weekend.
Thank you for contacting Garmin Product Support.
If you need additional assistance, please reply to this email or you can call 800-800-1020 any time from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Central Standard Time, M-F.

OK here it is...........
I make no guarantees that this will work for you, but it did for me.
I just tried this and I got my nuvi760 back to fw ver 2.90 which seemed to work the best for me.
First goto this site and save the fw version you want to backdate to....
http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/
Then go here and save the zip file to you computer.........
http://www.garmin.it/files/nuvi7xx%20missing%20software.zip
Extract this .zip file and you will get and updater.exe file and a .rgn file.
Now follow the directions below and voila,
your backdated to fw ver 2.2.
Then run the .exe of the version you downloaded from the perry site, and you'll be back to the fw ver of your choice.
1) With the unit off and the USB cable unplugged, slide the switch to the lock position.
2) Now press and hold your finger in the middle of the screen.
3) Then plug in the USB cable which should turn on the unit.
4) The screen will not indicate anything different, except that the standard booting messages will not display. Note: You will have approximately 35-40 seconds to drop the .RGN file onto the Updater.exe before the unit switches over to it's normal Mass Storage Mode.
5) Once you put the unit into pre-boot mode you may have to install the USB drivers before the unit is recognized as a standard USB device.
6) Now drag and drop the .RGN file onto the Updater.exe and that should force the software to re-load
All of your user settings will be restored to factory defaults, so you will have to reset these to your preference when finished.

4 Do I let go at any point? How do I drop it onto a program that is not running?
5 Mine went to screen calibration mode, is this normal?
6 Exactly what does this mean?

Hit ok on the updater
Hit ok on the updater.
You must keep your finger on the middle of the sreen the entire time until it says loading.
You also need to select USB device.
Windows may give you a message that it found new hardware. If so let it load the drivers. Then try again.
The directions were written by the software engineer, not by me.
I actually had to try it twice before I got it to work right.
Keep trying.
I found more discussion about this here, but for different reasons.

I am back to 3.0. Thank you!

Side note......
The link for the updater will give you a .rgn file for fw ver 2.50.
In my directions I stated 2.2 because that's what was sent to me.
Either way, you can get backdated.
On the GPSPassion forum they

Have to ask, after you have downgraded, does your bluetooth work? because mine dont.
Just saw this on another post
"UPDATE: DO NOT DOWNGRADE Nuvi 760 from 4.00 using the files in this thread or you WILL lose bluetooth functionality and have to ship the unit back to Garmin for servicing."

I don't know. This issue and the refereed update and rollback is for 7xx series only.
You should check for 660 updates at the garmin site.

think there is a correlation?
There was a thread some time ago about a company who claimed to be able to "repair" units that had Garmin Lock enabled but a "forgotten" PIN code. The opinion was that they found a hack of some sort to bypass the PIN code system of Garmin Lock. Unfortunately, this "repair" would disable Bluetooth permanently. Here's the original thread:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16145
I'm wondering if this change to Garmin's firmware is a result of trying to make it harder to defeat the Garmin Lock feature. It sure seems interesting to me that using this unofficial method to downgrade firmware also disables Bluetooth. And I wonder if this is an underlying issue behind all this.
If this "feature" of Garmin's new firmware is an attempt to make Garmin Lock less hackable by thieves, I guess we might just have to endure it.
Bluetooth
I just notice that my bluetooth is disabled too. I will get back with the software engineer at Garmin and see if he can help some more. Being that this is a holiday weekend, it may be Tuesday before I can get an answer.
Sorry about that, but at least my nuvi navigates correctly now. I can live without bluetooth for a little while.
V4.00 no longer available
Garmin has pulled the V4.00 update off their website and replaced it with V3.1. Hopefully a fix will come quickly.
Mine's a paper weight now...
It's frozen with the Garmin logo on the screen. I wouldn't recommend anyone using this fix...
I have tried several times. The 760 now can’t be turned off and appears to be trying to boot over and over until the battery dies…
Well I guess I’ll take it back to Costco and get a 770 instead….

I just rolled back to software version 2.90 on my Nuvi 750. Thank you!!!!!! I think I'll stick with 2.90 until it is critical for me to update. 2.90 seems to be the the best version thats works for my needs.

From Garmin support page.......
Question: My unit says "Enabling Bluetooth" and stays on that screen. How do I fix it?
Answer:
If your unit says "Enabling Bluetooth" and stays on that screen, the Bluetooth file will need to be updated or replaced on the unit. If the unit is reset, the message will no longer show on the screen and the unit can be used again. However, the Bluetooth will not work until the Bluetooth file is updated or replaced. To update the Bluetooth file, please use the WebUpdater. If the WebUpdater is not able to fix the issue, please contact Garmin Product Support.

Ok, I am being a bit facetious and I was playing with my thesaurus a bit, but any more let downs with this ‘firmware’ or whatever you chose to call it, and I will have to bury my nuvi in the back yard, say a few words and go buy a Tom-Tom because my nuvi is broken and Garmin broke it.
But alas, I am only left with hope that Garmin will fix this in a timely manner and that someone else will have the nerve to try their fix before me.
There! I vented. I feel better.
On that, has anyone tried the WebUpdater with the version (3.1) that is now available on Garmin? I believe all prior attempts to rollback were with the manual updater.

Just tried 3.1 over 4.0
Using the Software download from the Garmin site I simply ran the 3.1 "update" and it reported successful installation. For all Paul Harvey fans out there...
Now the Rest of the Story...
After rebooting my Nuvi 760 and looking at bothe diagnostic screen amd the Settings/System/About screen the software version is reported as 4.00
I would be interested in others reporting their failures/successes.
It will fail
There is only one way to revert to an earlier version after you upgraded to ver4.00
The 3.1 ver on the website is the last supposedly working ver prior to 4.00.
It has not been modified to overwrite 4.00.
You have to use the method posted by JohnC.
Use this for only the NUVI750,because the 760 and above have bluetooth and if you revert back the bluetooth quits working. And in a post from GeoPassions it said if revert back and bluetooth quits you will have to send the unit to Garmin to fix.

if Garmin having posted 3.1 again to include that little piece of information. I personally couldn't care less about the bluetooth capability being lost. However I want Garmin to fix the problem as quickly as they can. I'm not going to hack my GPS just to get an older version on it. I might switch to a non-TTS voice for awhile.
bluetooth
Did anybody notice if bluetooth stop working with 4.00 or only after trying to backdate the firmware?
Bluetooth works fine with 4.0 firmware
I have my 760 at 4.0 and the bluetooth works fine and in fact everything works fine except the one thing that is the problem there is a .1 mile lag in the turn announcements. It says .4 but the display just turns .3 at the same time. One other thing it will not allow you to revert to an earlier firmware without a real process and then you will loose bluetooth.

I just purchased my 750, I downloaded the new software and 2009 maps, I tested the system before all the new downloads and found improvements after the downloads. The new maps show the back bays in my area as blue, it did not show that with the old map. I do not have any lag when approaching turns, everything is dead-on! I guess I just got lucky!

confused
I just look at my Garmin 650 and my system says:
Software version 4.50
GPS SW version 3.00
Audio version 1.90
so do i have the latest update?
All this talk about Version 4 is this the GPS SW version ( in whick case I guess I have not updated mine yet)
Help this old one figure this out please.
.
This thread ONLY pertains to the 7xx series.
Other models are not affected.
thank you
now the next ? when I just went into the Garmin site and went to Garmin support and then to updates and downloads I do not see any thing for a nuvi 650 in the way of downloads....does that mean there is nothing out there for it?
And what version to I have in this unit? software version 4.50 or the is it the GPS SW version 3.00 it has both on the screen so what do they mean?
.
Just run WebUpdater with your nuvi connected to your computer with the USB cable and you will get the latest of both.
The software version is the same as the firmware version.
The GPS SW version is the GPS chip firmware. 3.00 is the latest available.

I have been battling with Garmin about this update for about a week now. The latest email said that they had checked their site and that the latest update was 3.1 issued in June. They flat denied that 4.0 existed. They went on to say that they had received no complaints about the latest update. I hate being lied to, but maybe that's just me.
