built-in POI's on a Garmin 260W

Anyone find any answers on this? I can't even find my built-in icons when in "MAP" or navagation. I can only see them if I pan the map. Then when I go back to "MAP" there gone again???? I've tried 2D and zoom.....WAZUP???? I'd like to try to load some custom POI's but....GEEE I'd like to master this obsticle first. Can anyone help or direct me to a thread. I've tried to no avail to find one. I'm sure I'm not the only 260W owner with this problem ...AM I? I/m brand new with this GPS as well as this forum. BTW....Great site. I'm gonna be here alot. Thanks for any help in advance.

They are suppressed

Most units have the icons suppressed in nav and map mode. This is done so that the screen isn't so cluttered when navigating.

Custom POI's and Favorites do show in these modes. However, the custom poi icons may require you to zoom in quite a bit.

poi s

i also have a 260w when in nav mode i dont see my poi s that i keep on a memory card or the ones i downloaded i only see them in map mode

to be able to see them you

to be able to see them you have to zoom in further in NAV mode

I believe I am.....

I believe I am zoomed in all the way. Is there an easy way to check?
Let me try to explain... When I first turn the 260W on and after it aquires sats. I go to "view Map" This is where I want to see POI's. Currently I can't see them in "View Map" nor in Navigation mode. Now on the "Map" page in the upper left and right corners are the + and - (this is the zoom your speaking of right? I've got the plue sign pushed numerous times untill it greys out (max) I still can't see POI's . I've even tried 2D track up and Map detail to "MORE" still nothing.????? I've gotta be missing something. Can someone please rescue me. I'm going nuts over this!!!! It seems the only way I see the built-in POI's is if I touch the screen in Map or Navigation mode and drag my finger across the screen to move the map....there they are. Great....but as soon as I touch the "back" button to go back to nav. mode they dissapear GGGGRRRR.
I've gone to the Garmin site and loaded webupdater. I've been able to load various vehicles from both the Garmin site as well as this one. I've also loaded the POI loader to my computer along with some custom POI's but, I haven't loaded them onto this unit yet. I want to get passed this problem first. I can't wait for it to all come together. I accumulated alot of data from this site thus far but I can't seem to get pass this problem.....PLease PLease help. I can't wait to load some wav files and change the TTS Jill "Recalculating" to my own smart a## stuff. Cab someone please help?

Bawzvert,
I think you are seeing exactly what you are supposed to see on that model for the built-in POIs. I cannot understand why you are so insistent upon seeing them on the screen; if they all showed up, your screen would be very cluttered and you couldn't see anything. They are not clickable. There are numerous threads on this subject and new users seem to think there is something magical about seeing a bunch of icons. There isn't. I believe your icons for custom POIs will show, but you won't know until you get with it and try them.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Not On Mine

They aren't designed to work that way. At least my 660 doesn't do that. If every icon for every POI were displayed along side the roads, stores, restaurants, gas stations, etc. 1) the screen would be totally cluttered, 2) the refresh rate would get worse than it already is.

I think you are beating your head against the wall and all you're going to get is a headache. sad

Thanks for the quick come back

Maybe your right and I'm just a greenhorn and don't understand....yet. BUT.... Why are the there then? I understand there are thousands of them built-in POI's. why wouldn't you be able to see them. I thought the idea was for them to show up on the map to give you an idea that there are eateries, gas stations rest areas, airports etc. along your rout without haveing to navagate to and indivual or particular one....Am I wrong? Is this concept inaccurate?

Thank you Sir

Then can you explain to me just how they "ARE" designed to work......how would you use them??

With many models with the current firmware, you must be BROWSING THE MAP (ie, you have to touch the map to enter the Browse Mode) in order for the icons to show on the screen.

It's just how it is unless Garmin decides to reprogram it.

Rather than relying on finding them on the map, it's probably much more simple to just use the menus. The POI lists on the menus will show you the nearest locations to to present position.

Thank you again

AAAAHHHHH. Well i'll be a SOB....I guess it make sense. Is my thought process inaccurate as well if: When I add a custom POI like "All Dunkin Doughnuts in New England" They will only show up in the "Browse" mode as well or will the actually be on the map page along with a Bitmap and perhaps a Wav. file???

Custom POI's Show Up

At least on my 260W, custom POI icons show up when they come into view while navigating. There are so many installed POIs that it would be hard to read street and road names if they were all displayed.

Use The Menus

The POI list will show you real-time distance to the closest POIs. So lets say you are thinking about restaurants. click Where To/Points of Interest/Food/All. The unit will then show you the closest restaurants. As you continue driving the unit will constantly update the distances/closest restaurants.
