Nuvi 200 newbie

Hello all, my name is Doug. I just ordered my garmin nuvi 200. It will be delivered to my doorstep on 8/25, just in time for my trip to MD. I did alot of reasearching before buying. All the reviews I read, people had nothing but good things to say about the nuvi 200. Staples.com had it on sale, bestbuy.com had the nuvi 250w on sale. I decided to go with the cheaper 200, since I am a new GPS user.

As actual users, what are you thoughts on the nuvi 200? What can I expect? What should I do before I use it?
After doing some reading, it seems as though the first thing I should do is update it with garmin's webupdater. I was thinking of downloading the POIuploader from garmin's site, but I have a few questions about that. Does the POIuploader already have POIs on it, or is it just software that will allow me to transfer files? I've also read that something useful is to delete language files. I may hold off on that until after my trip (don't want to screw up my brand new garmin ya know!)

Something else I've been wondering about this GPS; say I'm driving down the road, and I want to get somewhere. Do I have pull over and enter the address, or will the GPS calculate my position while i'm moving and give me directions from my location?

Thank you for any advice and help you guys can give me, i'm sure POI factory will make my GPS experience all the better!

Don't have a 200, but here goes....

POILoader is required to load POI's to your unit. Download it. And, no, it doesn't have any pois on it.

Before deleting any files, back up the unit.

You can delete all language files that you don't need. DO NOT delete the gmapprom file.

Yes, the unit will direct you back to your route if you get off for some reason. You can add a stop, while in route, as a "via" point without affecting your ultimate destination.

First thing you should do is backup the entire GPS; just drag the the entire drive over to your computer.

As for immediately updating, let me voice a dissenting (minority) opinion. If you find it is working well, I wouldn't change a thing. Of the major problems posted on this site, most have followed an update; either the update has a bug, or something goes wrong and the map is lost. Unless there is some deficiency (that is important to me) and the update promises to fix it, I see no reason to tempt fate. Make sure you know what the update is for. There are a number of people on this site who would love to go back to an earlier version of the firmware, but can't.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Welcome!!

I am sure that you have a lot of questions about your Nuvi 200. Up on the top of each page you will find 3 tabs, under them you will see "getting started & faq". they will help you right away.

I agree with you on that. I'm not one for "immediate" updates especially before you're used to or start to learn your new equipment be it a computer, gps, new phone, etc. There are even a lot of people out there that would like to buy a new PC but don't want Vista so are stuck waiting till the bugs are out of that operating system (a long wait I'm sure!).

It will do it

The GPS will calculate a new destination that is entered while the vehicle is moving. It is not very safe for the driver of the vehicle to be entering an address while moving however.

I'd suggest checking the map version

I'd suggest checking the version of the maps on the Nuvi. There are probably still units being sold with the 2008 maps. (From the main screen, tap the wrench icon, then Settings->Map->Map Info). If the Nuvi has the 2008 maps, you can register it online with Garmin and get the 2009 map free as a download or pay $10 to get the DVD shipped. The download and loading on to the Nuvi will probably take 2-3 hours depending on your download speed and requires deleting some of the voices in toher languages to make enough space.

If the map data is old, your Nuvi's firmware probably is too and can be updated online with Garmin's WebUpdater app.
