Changing poi files

I am a new POI user and I have thee questions.
1. Can I change the file name of an existing POI file as long as I don't change the extension?
2. Can I use copy/paste to combine existing POI files?
3. Are there any limitations to the length of a POI file?

3. Not sure, but I don't think so. There are a lot of files here with thousands of entries.

Length
The length is limited only by the amount of storage space on your unit.
