Chit Chat Thread for the week of August 11, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Soul legend Isaac Hayes

Soul legend Isaac Hayes has passed. He was most famous for his 1971 soundtrack for the classic movie "Shaft," which brought him an Academy Award for best song as well as two Grammys.

I had the pleasure of performing for him at his parties and with him on many occasions ( I play drums!).

He was a class act and will be missed.

The way that we have things set up right now with CSV files there is a limit in excel on how many lines you can have. I will have to see if there is the potential to make a database that would hold all these files.

Go Rays!

Up 4.5 games over Boston in the AL East.

With 71 wins, they set a club record and surpassed their highest season win total in franchise history!

What about Morgan Freeman - he had a close call in his auto accident and he's 71. I like him as an actor.

Nothing Going On? Nonsense!

It continues to amaze me that even in a boring week, that there is always so much going on. From the passing of favorite actors, and the Olympics in Beijing, and all the other little things going on - there is never a lack of something to talk about.

Any Aaron Rodgers fans can discuss the outcome of his inaugural game tonight. (I'm not a Packer fan, but hey - you gotta see what the other guys are doing...)

Now, back to my route. It seems that whenever I get up early in the morning, and follow the sun for the day, I end up in the evening where I began.

Finally going down in my neck of the woods to $1.224/litre. That's a drop of 15 cents per litre in the last month. I'm still planning my trips and avoiding unnecessary travel though (as are most people). Hopefully, it'll keep going down...

Something to think about as you prepare to go on vacation

Something to think about as you prepare to go on this year's vacation

An email I got from a Friend in St. John's, which I thought I should share with everyone.
Just last weekend on Friday night we parked in a public parking area. As we drove away I noticed a sticker on the rear window of the car. When I took it off after I got home, it was a receipt for gas.

Luckily my friend told me not to stop as it could be someone waiting for me to get out of the car. Then we received this email yesterday:

WARNING FROM POLICE

BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE
- NEW WAY TO DO CARJACKINGS ( NOT A JOKE )

Heads up everyone! Please, keep this circulating.. You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. You start the engine and shift into Reverse.

When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift into Park, unlock your doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view.

When you reach the back of your car, that is when the car jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car.

So now the car jacker has your car, your home
address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED.

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and family, especially to women. A purse contains all kinds of personal information and identification documents, and you certainly do NOT want this to fall into
the wrong hands.

I Just Thought I would pass this along. Have a great night.

another ploy

I have also hear one that is used on women where they wait until you have started the car and then come up to you window to try to tell you that you dropped a $5 bill, so you get out to get it and they take your car.

Fortunately

One of my daughters gave me the COMPLETE DVD set of the 11 M*A*S*H seasons so at least I can avoid the "nothing but" politics programs.
I'm afraid it will be nothing but "mud slinging" for another 3 months and then 1 month of "cheating" accusations.

After the month of mud slinging, then the accusations of cheating, don't forget the four years of "you should have voted for the other candidate," and "this one's worse than what we had before..." wink

I was one of those that bought the M*A*S*H Season DVD's as they were released. The same with Hogan's Heroes. All three of my kids (14 and under) would watch them for hours if we let them. My nine year old got up late one night and pulled an all-nighter on the Hogan's Heroes. My wife wants to know what I started. grin

Being Alert

While the story about taping a piece of paper on the back of the car window, and the one about saying you dropped money are both good things to know, and should certainly keep everyone alert for things to watch out for; both of these are listed as false at Snopes.com. That said - it certainly should make everyone wonder, and to be mindful of where they are and the conditions (dark, isolated, etc.)

The TV news had a bit this morning about all the car break-ins because of all the GPS units sitting right in the front window, as well as laptops, purses, and even wallets sitting in the front seat of unattended cars.

Wow, 2 octane points off the '87' standard and they get away with this? I wouldn't run this fuel as it violates car warranties. That said, I'm glad we don't have this problem in Canada. Yet.

I paid 3.699/gal today at my normal station for 87 octane.
That's .34/less than I paid at the same station 25 days ago.

$3.59 at the local BP for regular (87 octane as well). Sam's Clib should be between 12 and 20 cents less per gallon. I'll find out shortly.

--
Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

Sam's down here in Daytona

Sam's down here is only a couple cents cheaper than surrounding stations.
I don't buy my gas at Sam's as they won't accept my AAA Visa card which gives 5% rebate. I am a Sam's member !!!!
I'm actually "ONLY" paying $3.52/gal with the rebate at my station.

Something to think of as you go on vacation

I came into the house late the other night and found a 269 pound adult using the computer. When I said what are you doing? He just grunted and didn't even turn around. I looked in the kitchen and discovered many dirty dishes. In the back hall there was a new pile of dirty clothes. I looked in the refrigerator and the food was gone, but beer cans had appeared. In the trash and next to the trash there were empty beer cans.
Have I been house knapped?

New laptop

I feel like my eyes are going to pop out of my head. I got a brand new laptop yesterday and I will be in that adjustment period for the next few days.

I am used to having only one program at a time updated instead of every program on my computer. I am excited about having a faster machine now that will not have me sitting around waiting to process my request.

Using the updated version of Microsoft Outlook is really cool, I am an organization fanatic and I love the new layout. I can see my calendar and emails at the same time. This is so cool.

Just felt like sharing,

Miss POI

P.S. if you see strange messages in your emails from me in the next day or two that is because the paste button is where the send button should be. I have made that mistake already a few times.

I think that the old laptop knew that it's days were numbered, it started to make a really bad weezing sound two or three days before the new one showed up. It was the fan and I was really worried about it.

Isnt it nice to have some

Isnt it nice to have some good equipment to work with, IF you hadnt overworked your old wheezing one it would still be alive.
