Help Downloading To My Garmin

I just downloaded a POI for ExxonMobil Interstate locations to my computer. When I open my POI Loader and browse for the file, it does not show up in the folder that it is in for me to download to my GPS. Am I doing something wrong? I have a 260w and am trying to get some Mobil locations which are on highways and do not show under POI's from Garmin. Any help would be appreciated!!!

It is asking for the folder not the file

Just point it to the folder the pois are in and continue it will load all the pois in the folder you point to..

It's a common mistake for people doing it for the first time...

Just a example of how I would do it.
1.Under my documents on computer make folder and call it My Pois.
2.Put the ExxonMobil Interstate locations csv file into the folder My Pois.
3.Hook gps up to computer using the usb cable.
4.Run Poiloader in express mode unless you want to set alert. If setting alert select manual mode.
5.When browse comes up select the My Pois folder not the csv file.
6.Complete the Poiloader process.
7.You can go to your gps and touch where to,custom pois and extras and you should see the file.

This is how it would look on your computer

>My Pois=Main Folder
>>ExxonMobil Interstate locations.csv

If you plan to download many csv files like the rest of us.You may want to look at using subfolders to maintain some order with your files see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8674

When the questions have been answered numerous times before and people don't utilize the "search" function then yes, I am a little rough. Look through and see how many times that question has been answered. Ad nauseum. When we have to wade through the same rubbish all the time it gets old. Let's give it a little effort and read the info that is already here. Electrons are a non-renewable resource smile

I have to agree with Walleye1, If the newbies would just spend the time and search for the questions they want answered, they would find many answers to the questions they have asked.

After clicking on jkorabekjr stats he had only been a member for 20 hours, that left enough time to download the files try and figure out where to put them and get some sleep. if he had either used the search feature or read the FAQ located at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/85 he would already be up and running and finding the gas stations on the interstates.

So Durango he was right in his answer, even though you didn't like it, be sure to read read read, thats how I learned my way around.

I have read and not found answers...

That doesn't mean they aren't there it means I wasn't familiar with the search engine... And just because you read a faq doesn't mean you understand that the poi loader is looking for a folder rather than a file... How do you think I knew what he may have been asking? Maybe I'm more patient than others or maybe I'm going to be a patient or maybe I am a patient.....

I also understand walleye1's frustration...c'est la vie, say la vee, La vie en rose, the voice of a sparrow...One of my favorites,,

Try searching the forum to see if your question has already been asked. Before you post a question, it's just common forum etiquette.

please do the following first:

1. Read the getting started:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1631
or this FAQ:
http://www.poi-factory.com/faq
You may find the answer there.

The Frequently Asked Questions and Tutorials listed there will give you many answers to questions you may have.

2. Search (Located just below the forum name on the top left of this page.) If you don't find the answer in the FAQ's Links, then PLEASE take the time to do a search through the forums before you post the question, especially for your particular question. Many questions have been asked in different ways and with different words, a search will bring up answers to most questions, with a good array of answers from a lot of expert users, as well as novice users.

While we are here to help, it does get tiring answering the exact same question over and over and over and over again.

If you look careful enough, you might even find Waldo or a Super Hero Hotdog.

FAQs versus Helpful Direction

Although I highly respect the knowledge base represented by those contributing to this posting, I hold firm in my belief that we could have done a better job easing this newbie into our world.

I know we should all read the FAQs before we ask questions. And that's what I did when I first joined the forum. I read and reread many of the FAQs, but I still had questions and I always received good help. Sometimes one good example can make all the difference in the world in understanding a new concept, and that's what charlesd45 did for our newbie. Even walleye1 finally pointed the newbie to the correct FAQ in his 2nd but rather caustic posting.

But IMHO, the most helpful was charlesd45, followed by aophiuchus and dog_poop. This is how we should be helping each other, especially newbies. If we can't be helpful without getting frustrated and jumping their case, then we should stay off the air and let the electrons pass to someone else.

Did we scare this newbie away? Hope not. Perhaps the example posted by charlesd45 was all he/she needed to get over the hump. Humps we have all encountered at one time or another.

There was a post a while back dealing with what you liked about POIFactory and resulted in lots of good comments .I remember one comment made by I think a new member. He said sometimes there is a better answer then see this post to welcome a new member on board.I think Durango explained it quiet well.

Redirection post....

I know that there are times when you see one of these posts and you just want to rip your hair out. Please keep in mind that this is not the same person visiting out site again and again and again asking the same questions.

This is a new excited member coming to us for help. I don't think that there was any negativity in the way that this was handled on Walleye's post until that was projected from another user. Walleye is a long time respected member of this community and I know that he didn't mean any harm.

I don't have a magic solution to offer for these situations, if you find yourself annoyed by new people and don't have the patience to respond in a positive encouraging way, don't respond.

Let's keep this a positive environment where people feel safe asking questions and don't feel worried about being shamed for asking something that may have been asked before.

I strongly believe that patience and politeness is one of the keys to keeping our environment a nice place to visit and if we continue to encourage that protocol we will continue to grow.

Sincerely,

Miss POI

My two cents

Here's what I posted in April ....

----
I think that people process information differently. And people learn differently.

Not everyone can read a page full of information a extract the pieces that are pertinent to their issue and be able to apply the information to their particular situation.

Some people might read the faqs but still are having a hard time understanding exactly what it says. By asking a question in their own words and (hopefully) getting an answer that applies specifically to them, the light bulb goes off and their understanding of the process begins to develop.

Some people don't know what they don't know, so they don't even know where to start searching on the site. There's a ton of information and they might get bogged down or intimidated by all of it. You can almost "see" their eyes glazing over in the wording of their questions.

Sometimes things need to be phrased differently for different people in order for them to have comprehension. People might say, "Oh, I didn't know that that's what that meant."

Sometimes people have a hard time seeing the similarity between their situation and one that is either in an existing thread or in the faqs. Again because people process information differently.

People may have read something previously in the faqs or even in the manual, but by the time they go to apply it, they have forgotten either that they read it, what it means, or how to apply it.

To me, that's why we have forums and not just a listing of faqs.

Just my two cents (well, maybe three cents).

Exactly

Once again Motorcycle Mama hit the nail on the head. This is a forum not a list of faqs. The Forum should support the faqs.

Newbies

We were all newbies once. It hasn't been too many months since I visited this site for the first time. Thanks to Miss POI and Motorcycle Mama, I found out what I needed to know and began to feel comfortable coming back to this site. My questions then were very similar to the one this newbie asked, but they didn't make me feel like an idiot and tell me to read previous threads. They answered my questions. If I had been treated like this poor soul was, I don't think I would have come back.

Last Comment on this Subject

Believe me when I do exactly as Miss POI suggested and pass on another question that has been answered multiple times in multiple threads. But its obvious that there is no effort being made to help themselves other than to get an instant reply to a question and receive immediate gratification.
Durango apparently considers himself a lightning rod for the cause and I will no longer comment on any of the above. I would hope that everyone else will as well and let sleeping dogs lie.

Not the case, Walleye1. I'm just a member of this community who found your replies to be both caustic & insensitive. I was truly embarrassed by the way you treated this newbie. And I was equally embarrassed by those who quickly jumped to your defense, including Miss POI.

As another member stated above, if we aren't going to help each other on this forum, then let's just list the POIs and the FAQs and stay off the air.

And BTW, how in the world would you know that this newbie made no effort to help himself/herself?

Right to their opinion

First, everyone has a right to their opinion. Hammering someone because their opinion differs from yours is no better than hammering someone for asking a duplicate question.

I see a repeat of what happened when we started a computer club and had free one-on-one help ... we were inundated with requests for help. They found it much easier to make a phone call to get their computers running than it was to read the instruction manual.

The FAQ and SEARCH options are there for a reason. Is it really too much to require everyone (not just newbies) to use these resources before making a post? This problem doesn't only apply to questions. There have been multiple threads (the same day) telling about new GPS units, and multiple threads showing updates to a specific unit, all of which could have been avoided had someone used these resources.

When one signs onto POI Factory to find out 'Whats new', and everything you find has been hashed over and over again, one tends not to visit much anymore. Is this the reason we no longer see many posts from us old-timers?

As long as we cater to these individuals who want 'instant help', they will continue asking. The solution to this problem is not to answer the question directly, but to refer them to the thread (or FAQ) which originally answered the question. This would also solve another problem, that of "giving credit where credit is due"... the individual who did the hard work to answer the original thread.

After Garmin's POI Loader software is installed on your computer, the basic steps for loading POI files are as follows:

save the POI file(s) you download from POI Factory to a new folder on your computer
connect your GPS to your computer
start POI Loader and select your GPS device (Nuvi or SD Card)
select the option to transfer POIs to your GPS
browse to the folder in your computer that contains the POI file(s)
follow the on-screen prompts (default choices should work just fine), and POI Loader will transfer the locations to your GPS
If you run into any bumps along the way, just post.

2 cents from a brand new newbe

WOW folks. I just bought a brand new Garmin nuvi 260W. Great GPS. Don't know much about it yet,but I'm learnin'. I read and printed lots and lot's of FAQ's in an attempt to enhance my love of this GPS. I seem to be a bit greedy i guess. I want more than the stock voices. I kinda think Jill TTS is quite boring. I love the Astralian gal but she's not TTS. I believe tonight when I get home I'm gonna do the webupdater and install (or at least try) it to my 260w. then I'll try the poi loader with some instructions i've printed out here in this forum. I'd like the Double D (Dunkin Doughnuts) icons and an alert on the map. Red lights, rest stops, etc.
I'm under the understanding that there are some POI alread installed on my unit but I can't seem to see any. I've tried to zoom in all the way with no results. I will try the 2D instead of the 3D to see if that makes a difference. No proximity points are "STOCK" on my unit either. Perhaps after I load POIloader it will? I'll keep you posted on my progress. Look guys, I'll do my best to figure this stuff out via reading these posts but in all honesty....I suck at following direction. (which is why i now own a garmin 260w) In other words ...I may need your expertise and help. Please be gentle with me. This is the beat site I've EVER been to. I can't wait to change the voice from recalculating to my own thing. Keep up the great work You folks "ROCK"

I see this same issue on

I see this same issue on many forums. Older members that have seem it all before lacking understanding and compasion for the newbies. Most of the time newbie are not familar with how the search engines work and can't find anything. My suggestion is if you don't want to provide anything other than "go search or see FAQ" then don't respond at all.

We are here to help, aren't we ???

Hi everyone,

I'm quite new on this wonderful site. When I discovered it I was so excited from this new world and all the possibilys and funs projects now available for me, I just want to start right away. I didn't even saw that there was a FAQ section, the only thing that I seen was the POI section and the forum.

Of course, I read many of the posts and get answers from them, I tryied few questions of my own and received rapidly very helpful and practical answers.

One thing we must keep in mind, we were all once NEWBE on this site and wiil be another time on another type of site where we will need help. There is good chances that we might ask a questions that has been answered many, many times before but to receive a personnal answer is always plaisant.

Also, keep in mind that some members are NEWBE with a computer, with internet, with GPS system, with POI, etc.
Another thing, as you might discover, english is not my first language and maybe others members, just like me, might need a little more help to understand differents terms or operations and put in practice.

Yes, the FAQ are a BIG HELP, but let keep a open mind and take the time to welcome the news ones and try to give them a hand.

From a (New...) member who is very happy to be a part of this great family !!!
