Nuvi 760 locking up frequently. Isolated problem?

Since I upgraded my 760 to the 2009 maps, it has been frequently locking up on me. It completely stops responding to everything other than a reboot.

I have spoken to Garmin about the issue and they are willing to swap out my unit for a new one.

However, I was just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this issue?

I did install the most recent (7/7/08) system update for the 760, however ,that did not resolve the issue.

Thanks

Thanks for the links. However, my problem doesn't seem related to either POI Alerts or the 3.10 update.

I have experienced the lockup problem when I'm not near any alerts and also experienced this issue prior to upgrading to 3.10.

after doing a 3.10 upgrade my nuvi 760 locked up on every trip, so mine is now with Garmin for repair - can hardly wait to get it back (i feel like an alcoholic with booz)

3.10 UP DATE

Shuts down when I go off route and recalculate of route starts!

The big problem I had with my 760 was that if I was on a route and diverted from the route the unit would shut off as soon as it started to recalculate the route with 3.10 firmware. Before I updated I had no problem it just recalced and continued on. I went back to the 3.00 firmware and now no shutdown when I divert and the recalculated route works fine and no shut down.

It's the 760 firmware update, nothing to do with the 2009 map update.

Perhaps it's the same in your area, but not in other cities and towns. Just a thought.

But I feel that there are a lot of strange things going on with 760. I've never had such problem with my old 350.
Last sunday, I drove from San Diego to Los Angeles. 760 gave me route through I15 but I5 route is a lot shorter. I feel that something is seriously wrong with 760.

Check your Navigation Route Preference settings!

You need to check your route preference settings. You can choose faster time, shorter distance and avoidances. These will be a factor in what route is selected by the 760.

I have read a number of reviews where the 760 was compared against other units and it won every time in selecting the best route. I had one route that I took all the time and I was sure in my mind it was the shortest and fastest way and then I had the 760 choose and it turned out the route it chose seemed wrong but in reality it was quicker and 1/2 mile shorter.

No problems

I updated as soon as it came out and have had zero issues with my 760. I just used it on a trip from California to Montana and back. Hello Thrak,
I'm happy 3.10 is working for someone.

This might seem like a silly question but have you loaded any poi's to your unit and are they set to alert ?

Yep. Lots and lots of POI files loaded. I have alerts for the Rest Area POI and for the Red Light POI files. They work properly and I don't have lockups. A few weeks ago I loaded a POI of geocaches and set alerts for them. They were loaded as a Tour Guide file. The alerts worked fine.

Thanks Thrak,
I thought you would have poi's loaded on your unit 760 running 3.10 and set to alert.

I sure am curious why 3.10 is working for some and locking up on others ? Do you suppose it could be a geographical thing ?

I'm in Ohio and needed to go back to Version 3.0 to get my Nuvi750 to work. I Never had a problem with the 750 before the 3.10 update.

Thanks again,

No lockups, but have been experiencing more or less random voice dropouts when routing using 3.10 on 760. Don't recall that with 3.00, and it seems to happen more often with lengthy routes (>50 miles) than with shorter ones. Audio ver. is 1.40, although I noted that Audio was at 1.90 when I purchased the unit with 2.90 FW.

Any suggestions?

There are some known lockup bugs with the 760

margelef, I doubt that the installation of the 2009 maps is responsible. But it's possible I guess.

I have the 760 myself and we have documented three known lockup or crash bugs with the 760. Perhaps you are doing one of those three things and don't know it. Are you using the Routes function of the 760? Two of the bugs involve the Route function with Routes generated with MapSource.

The last bug involves powering up when there is a POI or TouGuide alert within range. Do you have any POI or TourGuide with alerts set installed?

If you aren't using any Routes that were made with MapSource and don't have any POI or TourGuide alerts set, you should probably get it exchanged with Garmin. You might try the store you bought it from to see if they will exchange it.

3.10 update

When I first updated to 3.10 my unit would lock up frequently.
I used webupdater and reinstalled 3.10.
Since then, no more lock-ups.
I use Jack instead of Jill, so I don't know if Jill causes problems.
I could change to her and give it a try.
Maybe you could try Jack for awhile and see if it helps with any problems you are experiencing.

Odd

Odd that this problem is associated with the 760 and 780, but not the 750. I'm wondering if 3.10 had anything to do with either traffic or Bluetooth. My 750 has neither, and I've had no problems with either the 2009 map update or the firmware update.

Another try with 3.10

I reinstalled the 3.10 firmware update with the downloaded file this time instead of online and also switched from Jill 1.90 to Jack 1.40 and ran the same exact route I was having trouble with and diverted from the route in the exact same place as was causing the 760 to shut down and everything went fine. I even gave it a lot more recalc situations by diverting from the route more than 5 times and no problems. Either it was a problem with the original install ot the Jill 1.90 voice I was using before.

Garmin 760 Locking Up Everyday

I have updated my new 760 GPS 3.00 firmware to 3.10 because of locking problems about three weeks ago. However, my 760 still lockup at least twice a day. I have also upgraded my 2008 map to 2009 maps free from Garmin plus $10.00 S&H fee just today (08/01/08) and my GPS still locks up with the new 2009 map upgrade. I have to power down my 760 and power it up again to re-enter my routes all over... I will be contacting Garmin in the next several days to have them resolved this issue.

Thanks Rjrsw, Philc5987 and Thrak's

I reloaded my Nuvi 750 with 3.10, selected "Jack" audio ver 1.40 as the voice and went for a drive. I made it past 2 red light camera alerts, made some wrong turns to test the recalculating feature with no screen freeze and booted up near a red light camera alert. I was feeling hopeful that it has survived the 3.10 upgrade. A few miles later, it Blacked out on me. I wasn't near any loaded POI's when it happened, it just shutdown, twice.

The good news is 3.10 worked longer for me this time but when I got home I went back to version 3.0

Thank you all for your reports and making this the best site on the web.

Lockups

I upgraded to the 2009 maps and during a trip to Connecticut my Streetpilot I5 locked up. Even though I was running the air-conditioning I thought that the I5 was suffering from heat via the sunlight thorough the windshield. When I got home from my trip I made sure my favorites were backed up on my computer and then cleared all user data and re-downloaded my favorites. The I5 was no longer locked up and seemed to be working for a brief period of time. It now will not acquire satellites. I am planning on trying to re-install the 2009 map updates to see if that was the issue. I just purchased a Nuvi 750 and am anxiously awaiting delivery and am interested to see what happens with this firmware issue.

Not upgrading...yet

Well, I'm still scared of upgrading to this nasty 3.1 version. So still on v3.0. For the past 5 days, we went camping in a county park we've never been before. The 760 worked flawlessly taking us to gas stations, convenience stores, fast-food joints, church, etc. Most of these are custom-loaded POI's with alerts. I'm sticking to ver 3.0 until all these bugs are officially isolated and ironed out.

Going in for exchange

I did speak to Garmin and have gotten an RMA setup to send my 760 back to be exchanged. I would just exchange it at the store, but I bought from Costco.com and they are no longer selling this model.

The kicker for me was that on a recent trip, my 760 completely forgot how to speak English. No joke. The unit locked up on me (as usual), and after a reboot, the driving directions were all in French. I navigated to the voice preferences in the options and English was no longer an option! There were, however, several blank options, and some with un-recognizable characters...so something was definitely wrong.

After a few minutes of tinkering, the unit went back to its English speaking ways.

The I5 is now back to normal. I guess I just didn't give it enough time to find the satellites. Any ideas on why the I5 froze, any similar experiences. Only thing that is confusing is that it works when I have it on WAAS, but when I change back to GPS normal it will not acquire satellites. I will try with GPS normal again. I'm wondering if like a computer a GPSR can also lock up from time to time maybe it wasn't the heat.
Also received delivery of my Nuvi 750 and hope to test it this weekend.

Thanks Joel, I love the 750 - Very responsive, an excellent GPS to be sure. FYI my GPS came with the 2008 map program. After contacting Garmin they sent me a link to download the 2009 maps free of charge and the program said that I had to update software. I downloaded and installed the 2009 maps and updated my software. Now I didn't see anything that said it was firmware 3.10. I'm wondering if it was. Anyway all seems to be working fine. Is there anyway to determine if I have 3.10 or not.
