Hi Ray,

I call mine "Kemo Sabe"...

For those not old enough, "The Long Ranger" was a western style serial (1949-1956 in black and white and 1956-1957 in color), starring Clayton Moore as "The Long Ranger" and his sidekick, an Indian named "Tonto". The Long Ranger referred to Tonto as "Kemo Sabe" which, loosely translated, means "Trusted Scout".

Re: Do You Have A Name For Your GPS?

Ray are you sure it wasn't Tonto (Jay Silverheels) whe called the Lone Ranger "Kemo Sabe". (faithful friend or trusty scout, in his native language) I call both of mine gertrude as she gets real upset when I make her recalcuate often.

Gracie

Mine is called "Gracie".....after Gracie Allen of Burns and Allan fame.

With my old Garmin Street Pilot III I had only two voice options, male or female.

Thinking the female voice would sound more soothing (especially on long road trips) I opted for what I thought would be a nice harmonious voice coming from the speaker.

Ohhhhhh noooooooo! Never happen! What I heard was a smug "OFF ROUTE....RECALCULATING" every time I flubbed a turn. Yeeek!

My first thought was....dang, she sounds like Gracie Allan!

The name stuck.

With my Garmin 2720 I use the American-English Jill, but she'll always be Gracie to me.

Uh. . . no

Uh...no.

John has this one right. And, yes, it was the Lone Ranger and not the long ranger...lol.

My granddaughter just calls ours "girl"

Hi johnm405,

It wasn't Ray, it was me, and you're absolutely right, it "was" Tonto (Jay Silverheels) who called The Long Ranger (Clayton Moore) Kemo Sabe (trusty friend).

I saw the "original episodes" when they aired, for the first time, on that newfangled invention, they called "television".

Geez, time really flies when you're having fun...

You keep calling him that! grin

I agree with John, it is the Lone (not Long) Ranger. The "Long Ranger" is probably from a different genre. mrgreen

Personally I am more from the Night Ranger generation (rather than the Power Ranger one), but I'm still quite positive the correct one is Lone.

Krieger

Jack, of course

My wife and I call our GPSr "Jack" since that's the name Garmin gave him. We didn't want to confuse him, or cause an identity crisis. His voice is very steady and reassuring.

We used to use Jill, but have you noticed that Jill gets very irritated if you don't follow her directions exactly. Each time she tells you she has to recalculate, her voice becomes shorter and shorter, kind of like she's exasperated and thinks you're an idiot!

Never thought of calling

Never thought of calling it anything other than Nuvi or Garmin

Thanks for excluding the naughty names in your original post. I gave up on the last similar thread because of the frequency of the somewhat colorful (not obscene) choices most people were posting.

We called ours

Stella, no idea why, it was my wife's idea. We were using the British female voice at the time. I've changed to American Jill now because she knows that Hwy means Highway, not H W Y which the original Stella used to say.

Now that we use Jill I think she should be called Jill so as not to confuse her but my wife insists that she's still Stella and I'm the one confusing her. sad

It seems though that the 2 most appropriate names are Fred and Sam! I might just start calling it Pita Fred, Pain In The A$$.

GPS Names

Our nuvi came with Jill as the default so my youngest son (6) wanted to call it Nina, his little girlfriend. Tried that voice for several days but with my hearling loss in the high frequency range, I couldn't understand her over the car's A/C even with the sound all the way up.

So poor Nina had a gender change operation and it's now Nick.

Amen

Glad I wasn't the only one that thought that Jill was getting a little testy when she had to recalculate.

As far as a name, haven't thought about one, usually don't coverse with my Garmin that much.

Another Jill here.....

I actually wanted a sexy man's voice but Jack's was too low & I had trouble hearing it. Jill is bossy enough I feel like she's just another friend!!

My son gets a HUGE kick out of how I talk to her! She has become like another member of our family!

Oh, come on now! You mean you don't ask questions, or yell at your GPS when it gives you some bad directions? My favorite retort to Jack is when he tells me to make a turn that I know is incorrect or a time waster, and I reply..."I don't think so, Jack!" His response is always..."Recalculating."

In those cases, but I'm trying to keep my end of this conversation rated G. But since you must push me I DO perhaps have the occasional (paraphrasing SNL from when it was funny...) "Jill you ignorant..." Well those of you old enough will know what Jane was.

OK resume your discussion about the Long Ranger. razz

My daughter called ours LOLA from the day we got it. She remembered thats what they called it in the movie RV.

Could that be "Point-Counterpoint?"

GPS name

My wife calls my GPS "Rose" short for "Tokyo Rose" of WWII fame.

She usually says something like, "Can you quiet Rose down slightly so I can talk to you?"

Of course I always do, that is what has kept us together for the past 35 years.

Just...

We call her Karen 'The other women'...In fact she is the only woman in my life with a mute button!!!

My Wife named her Marusya. I think she gets a kick out of how she complains when I go my own way... I usually drive with the sound off or low until I get close to my destination. The GPS is nice but I still find the need for detailed paper maps, especially if I want to travel on secondary roads exclusively.

Name unprintable

My GPS used to be named Jill. But now she has an unprintable name. Last week she took me the "short route" to a site. Only problem is she took me off the main road and put me on a road that did not have access back to the main road for five miles. Oh well, it was a different route though some places I promise you I will never go to again. Therefore, she has earned an unprintable name.
