No street name while navigating?

Hi all,
This morning was the 1st time I took my brand new Garmin C550 with me to drive to work and tested it. While everything worked pretty much as I expected, it didn't display any street names (even when I zoomed all the way in) when an active route is being navigated (I set it to go from my home to work.)
Is this normal? As soon as I stopped the route, I could see the street names. Is there a way to have it displayed street names all the time?
Thanks!

Map Detail?

Under Wrench/Map, do you have a setting for map detail? Where is it set?

I set it to highest, that's 'MOST'. The street names all showed up when I 'stop' the active route. As soon as I turned it back on, there was no street names displayed... What does everybody else see?
Thanks!

On the c340 I see street names

On the c340 I see street names when routing or not. I don't know why your c550 would be different.

That is normal when you have an active route. That window then tells you where the next turn will be..

No street detail after v4.5.0 firmware update...(solved)

Hi All,

After updating my firmware from v4.4.0 to v4.5.0 I don't have the street detail on my map now, even while zoomed in all the way. I hadn't made any changes to my Nuvi 670 settings, either before or after the firmware update.

I selected the "Wrench" then the "Map" and chose "Map Info" and lo and behold the "City Navigator North America NT 2008" map was unchecked.

My other map "City Navigator Europe NT v9 was checked.

My only conclusion, is that somehow during the firmware update installation process, that map became unchecked.

All is now working properly, once again...

Hi all,
Thank you for your comments.

This evening when I went home from work, I double-checked everything and the street names were not displayed when an active route was activated **or not**. I could see all the streets around but no name was displayed. Only once in a while, a cross street name showed up. It doesn't matter even when I zoomed in all the way. However, when I press 'where to' then 'browse map' I could see most street names.

I have updated to firmware 6.50 and also Navigator 2009 map.

I have made a backup of the content of the GPS before I updated the map. Should I put it back?

Comparing to my previous

Comparing to my previous Navman iCN 510, the display of moving maps on the Garmin is really primitive (almost non-existent.) The Navman not just displayed the house number and current street name that I was moving along, it also displays every single side street name that I came across.

The Garmin didn't display ANY street name at all when I was on the freeways. On the local streets, it displayed only the major cross street names...

displays street names

My C550 displays street names, on a route or not.

When not on a route;
It will display the road name and direction in the green bar on the top of the page.
It also displays the names of the majority of side streets, this does vary with zoom level.

I'm running version 6.5 with the 2008 map.

My 260

My 260 also displays the side street names when I'm on a route, but only in 2D (Track up) mode, not in 3D. And that is with the detail setting at Less. I still seem to see the same stuff no matter where I put the detail setting.

Ok, if I want to revert back

Ok, if I want to revert back to 2008 maps just to see if it makes any difference, do I just remove all the .img files on my c550 and copy the old .img files back to it?
Thanks.

Do you see any street name at all when you were driving on the freeway with an active route?

The last time I was on a freeway....

I did the last time I was on such a trip, but I haven't been on the freeway since the update, so I can't say if that has changed. It did used to show some crossing roads, but not all. And there has always been more detail in 2D than in 3D. I think that's because it takes less processing power to refresh in 2D, so they can allow the unit to display more data.
