I like the 255W

I chose the 255W, and am happy (though no side by side comparison with a 750 of course). The interface seems quite clean, it has a few bells and whistles I do like (qwerty keyboard) and sat acquisition is way faster than on my lost 370 (and, inside, I get satellites much further in the room compared to the 370). My own view is that newer chips and faster processes beat out more bells and whistles. But ymmv. If she wants traffic, the 255W does not yet have a traffic receiver (as Garmin told me yesterday).

The 255 is a great unit, but

The Garmin site says both the Nuvi 255 and 255w will give you traffic if you get the optional MSN® Direct receiver.

The 255W is actually better than the 760, if one doesn't need the bells and whistles. The faster processor in the 255W updates the screen 4x faster and tracking is much smoother. I wonder why the cheaper models get the faster CPU first?

I think all the new 2X5 series have the new cpu

255/Traffic

All I know on 255 and Traffic is that it is compatible with both, since I mostly use in Europe, I cared about the FM receiver, was told it was not yet ready for the US model. No idea how MSN traffic connects, but I see no accessory that would connect it that is available right now. Obviously if someone has and is working, than I am wrong. The FM info is from Garmin.

The only difference between the 255 and 255W is the screen, and the 205 and 255 are some features, so the chips and upgrades are on all. All I know for sure is that updating is faster, satellite acquisition (after initial acquisition) is much faster, the 255W can see satellites when I am further from a window, all compared to my old 370 which was lost.

Since we travel with a better MP3 player for the car already, have much better blueteeth for our phones, and such, the 255W seemed like the winner to me.

I assume that at some point we will see the 755 which will make both the 750 and 760 obsolete. With cheaper European SD cards, the x70 series either needs heavy repricing or is irrelevant.

Traffic Receiver not yet available though many websites are offering to pre-order it. As I understand the receiver will be available at the end of the month. Please wait...

My 255W is great. I'd recommend it as a simplified entry level GPSr without confusing a newbie with a bunch of bells and thistles.

circuit city

You should check circuit city from time to time. They are selling some refurbished units. Right now their only wide screens are a 200(non tts though) and 660. If anything ever happens to your gps, most likely when you send it in they would send you a refurbished one back anyways. Just something to consider.

Traffic

Thanks Rayzers

Do you know if this is FM or just MSN - I am almost microsoft free and would prefer not to go back to my old bad habits.

Unclear why you say that 255 is entry level - it has everything I need except routes. And I do my routing on google maps, much prefer to work on a big screen with all the tools I need.

If you compare both units (Nuvi 255/255W) you will see that both units will be compatible with MSN® Direct for U.S. compatible & TMC traffic receivers. Please note is says MSN® Direct for U.S. My take on that is that while in Europe, you would need a FM Traffic receiver because MSN doesn't have service in Europe. I called my contact at Garmin and he told me that the MSN receiver will have a different adapter, and that it's not avalible yet. I would also assume that the FM receiver must have the same new adapter, so it will be different from the FM receivers that are now on the market and are for use with other Nuvi units that utilize the FM traffic receivers.

Also Nathbeck, if you re-read the post, you will notice that n8tyv is the person that said the 255w was "a simplified entry level GPSr", not me.

Be well

Right, can never get used to those grey boxes! Fortunately just a mis-attribution, not an attack!
