Several questions regarding POIs (and more) on Kenwood DNX-7120

Firstly, this may not be the correct forum for these questions, but here goes. I will try to explain completely what I am attempting to do, so I will apologize in advance for the long post.

I have a Kenwood DNX-7120 that we use in our F-350 while travelling. I have a number of POI files that I have created/modified from a number of sources, including POIs for the major truck stops (Love, Pilot, etc). They are in extended GPX format with address, telephone, etc. Each has its own icon. When I create the poi.gpi file with POILoader, I get the individual grouping for each POI in my Custom POI section of my GPS. However, I would like to be able to "group" some of the these together (like all of the truck stops) into a subcategory so that I can search all of the POIs in that subcategory or specific subcategories. I would also like to keep the unique icons for each POI (like the unique icons for Loves, Pilot, Petro, etc). I have tried using the extended GPX format to create categories, but that didn't work. I have also used mapsource to create the POIs (or waypoints), but it only created a single data file (in GPX format) on the SD card under the /Garmin/GPX directory. So my questions are:

1) is there a way to sub-categorize POIs using either POILoader or mapsource?
2) When mapsource creates POI (or waypoints) and you download them to the SD device, where in the GPS menus can I find them?
3) What is the algorithm that Garmin uses to determine whether a POI (or any other point) is "along the current route"?
4) What is the maximum distance off of the current route for the unit to identify it as on the current route?
5) Can the distance off of the route be modified/changed (similar to what MS Streets & Trips allows)? ie, I would like to see all/specific POIs that are within some specified distance off of the route.
6) I have a POI file that locates most of the low clearance bridges in the US. Is there a way to have the GPS route around that (instead of simpling warning when I am approaching one, which may be too late)

Again, sorry for the long post, but Garmin does not do a great job of documenting the intricacies of each function. I look forward to hearing from the forum members on their suggestions and if I can elaborate on any of my questions, please ask.

Folders

Question number 1.You can establish categories for your pois .Here would be example how to set up.
1.Create a main folder on your computer and name it what you want.
2.Click on the main folder and make subfolders.Name them based on what categories you want.
3.Place the gpx file or csv file and icons in the correct subfolder.

>main folder=my pois

>>truck stops=subfolder
>>>loves.gpx
>>>loves.bmp
>>>pilot.gpx
>>>petro.gpx
>>>petro.bmp
>>>pilot.bmp

>>lc bridges=subfolder
>>>lc bridges.gpx
>>>lc bridges.bmp

>>food=subfolder
>>>burger king.gpx
>>>burger king.bmp
>>>mcdonalds.gpx
>>>mcdonalds.bmp

Run poi loader in express or manual mode.Direct the poi loader to the the main folder not the subfolders.Once completed you should see your categories under custom pois.

That worked great!

Charlie -

Thanks for the quick reply. That worked like a champ! Overall the unit is great, but the documentation leaves much to be desired.

Do you know anything about the "along current route" search option?

Scott

I know on my unit you can

I know on my unit you can touch near at the bottom of the screen and search ahead for areas you going to. I would think your unit would have that.It is a nice feature especially if you want to do a search for resurants etc in a area before you head out.In you previous post you asked about way points most are saved in your favorites but some units can manage way points. Not familiar with everything on your unit so left it open for comments from other members. What I have read you have a really nice unit.

How far "off route" will it search?

I think it's a great unit also. Someone else thought my previous unit (a DNX-7100) was pretty great, too, because the relieved me of it in the middle of the night while the truck was at the dealership!

What I am trying to find out is how far away (i.e - side to side) of the current route does the search algorithm in the unit consider a POI (or anything for that matter) to be "along" the current route? Is it .5 miles? 1 mile? I really don't know. And can that value be changed?

For example, state parks are often farther off of a major route than 1-2 miles. So I would like to improve my search results by increasing the distance off of the route that it searches.

Any ideas? Do the Garmin units utilize hidden or undocumented functions? For example, an .ini type file which would allow you to override the default values?

I know to get a alert the

I know to get a alert the coordinates need to be within 50 ft of the road.Tour guides can increase that.H Hannah could add some detail information on that subject as well as some of the other un-answered questions you have.Hopefully he will see this post and add some info.
