Problem with Street Number

I just had a strange thing happen with my nuvi 780. I was typing in the address of a place I wanted to go. When I got to the street number, I typed in 5450. As I was finishing, a screen appeared with several ascending street numbers, beginning with 5449. But 5450 was not on that list! And the nuvi would never accept my exact input.

What's happening that my nuvi would accept the state, town, and street but not allow me to specify the exact street address? And what caused all these pre-determined street numbers to suddenly appear? Seems rather presumptuous of nuvi to think it knows better than I where I want to go.

Any ideas as to what is happening?

address number change

Have you tried to look up the same address in Google Maps? There are some addresses incorrectly loaded into the system, and it looks for a range of street addressed. Are you using the Garmin 2009 update?

address input

the address you are trying to enter does not exist ... at least as far as your map data is concerned. therefore, you are getting options to choose from.

there are a few reasons for this ... incorrect map data, people changing their address (to avoid a number, like 13, for instance, re-zoning in a town, etc.

pick something close, or you can even skip the number altogether.

It's in Google Maps

The address does exist in Google Maps. And I am using the 2009 map update. Oh well......it should still get me close. The address is for a fairly-new Gander Mtn Sporting Goods, but it is located in an old Wal-Mart building that's been there for years. Thanks for your help.

I'll use something close

I'll just let it take me to 5449, which should be close. Thanks for your help.

be careful

of those street address numbers. I've had many times where my gps has said that I'm "there", but I was still 1/2 mile away. As long as the gps gets me on the right street, and in the proximity of the address, I'm happy.

agree, be very careful

Google, Garmin, doesn't matter, street numbers are very inaccurate. I'll get in close, but you still have to do it the old-fashion way - scan for physical street numbers as you get close.

Phil, this one is in Sherwood, AR. I wasn't aware that there was a POI for Gander Mtn. I got this street address off their website and tried to enter it into my nuvi (but nuvi wouldn't accept 5450 - gave me 5449):

I tried address tonight

I tried address tonight located in Concord NC.It didn't show up in my 2009 maps.I put the information in Google maps and it also could not be found so my last resort was Mapquest.Sure enough Mapquest had the info.I wanted to add it to my favorites for a trip I had planned.Mapquest like Google maps allows you to do that. Garmin uses Google maps so just wondering is Mapquest more up to date?

Charlie, I'm kinda new to this. Are you saying that you can use either Google or Mapquest to add a place to your Garmin Favorites? If so, exactly how do you do this?

Gander Mtn in Sherwood, AR

Durango, you wrote:

Yeah, there is, and as a matter of fact, because of your post I revisited my POI entry for the Sherwood store and discovered it was wrong. I just resubmitted the corrected POI so it may take a day or two for it to be downloadable.

This is (I think) the correct longitude/latitude for that store:
-92.212348,34.802657

The easiest thing for you to do is download the existing Gander Mtn POI and correct the Sherwood store's location with the numbers above.

That's one nice thing about using custom POI's: You don't need to worry about not finding addresses. Custom POI's don't work off of no stinkin' addresses; they work off of long/lat.

Anyway, plug the numbers above into the GM POI and it'll take you right to the driveway of the GM parking lot.

Yes.The first thing you need

Yes.The first thing you need to do is install the Garmin Plugin http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3608 .Go to Google maps http://maps.google.com/maps or Mapquest http://www.mapquest.com/ .For Google maps put in a address or business search.Once the information comes up on the location look for send on right hand side and click on it.Screen will come up and you will see gps on left.Click on it and put brand in Garmin or Tom Tom.Hook your gps up to computer and click send and follow the instructions. You will find the new location under your favorites. For Mapquest put in the address in.You will see send top left.Hook you gps to computer and click on send and follow instructions. It is a nice feature to have. Here is the video thread from Google on how it works. http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2008/04/google-video.html

Durango

Just yesterday I entered a couple of Durango addresses into my GPS and it took them just fine. However, you will run into your situation from time to time. The GPS will still get you within a few hundred feet of your destination, so I never worry about it.

Streets That Are Not There

I have a problem here in Enterprise, Alabama. My Garmin c330 shows a street near me that does not exist and tells me to turn into it. Further, my street is not shown. When I drive home Lilith, that's the name we gave the voice, tells me that I've arrived at my destination. The graphic shows me in the middle or a field.

How far behind are the maps?

Street Addresses

Many of our maps are based on US Census Tiger files. These files are updated for the constitutional requirement of the decennial census (every ten years). Tiger files assume odd number addresses are one one side of the street and even on the other. Cities and developers violate this rule. If you get an odd address look on the other side of the street (in most cases).

Further, files code only the low address and the high address of street segments. Addresses in between are calculated by proportion. This saves us money when we buy our GPSr.

Street addresses for stores in shopping centers and malls often have a number on the main street and could be 100s of feet to a mile away from its actual physical location. This can be on the other side of a mall for instance and hidden from street view.

Then there's the problem of similar street names. Peachtree Lane, Peachtree Street, Peachtree Blvd., Peachtree Circle, and Peachtree Court are examples of this scenario. Is Peachtree St the same as Peachtree Street? (Atlanta did I miss a Peachtree?)

Our mappers try to update these maps but they need our help. They use many sources often with conflicting data.

Finally, our mappers return the data to us annually in an update.

The result is some of our map data is weeks old and sometimes a decade or more old. And we don't know which is which. Thankfully maps change at a rate much slower than the price of gas.

LOL

.....I'm lost. I'm over by the Waffle House on Peachtree. This was an actual call from a co-worker a few years ago when he got lost on his way to a meeting. LOL. This scenario could apply to at least 4 locations in the Atlanta metropolitan area. smile

How to report errors?

What's the most effective way to report errors back to the mappers? In my hometown, there's a street where the address numbers in my Garmin are quite confused. My friend's address shows up on the wrong block, almost a mile from her actual house! The location of the street is correct--it's just the numbering that's wrong. (Curiously, Google maps has it right.)

I don't know whether Navteq, Garmin, or someone else.

I tried it in Mapsource and it shows it as still being a WalMart and it does show it as 5450 in the POI properties. It still won't find 5450 in the "Places" search.

A tiny wart in GPS technology

rapriebe wrote:

I bought my C530 at the Gander Mtn store at 9620 Diamond Centre Dr. in Mentor, Ohio. The store's been there for almost seven years. To this day, that address doesn't exist to NAVTEQ. I can type the "9620" into the GPSr, but when I type in the "Diamond Centre," the 9620 gets changed to 9619. Google maps shows the store about a quarter of a mile west of where it really is. Diamond Centre just has never been mapped correctly. I know for a fact that the problem was reported to NAVTEQ at least five years ago, but it still hasn't been corrected. Ah, well, it's just a tiny wart.

When I look up 5450 Landers Rd, Sherwood, AR both Google Maps and Mapquest display the address as North Little Rock and not Sherwood.

The 2008 and 2009 City Navigator maps find 5450 Landers Rd in North Little Rock as well...

Yea, the boundary line is a little confusing, and I never quite know when I have left Sherwood and entered N. Little Rock.

I was simply going by the address listed at the Gander Mtn website:
Sherwood, AR Store #470
5450 Landers Rd
Sherwood, AR 72117
(501) 945-4070

shopping centers usually

shopping centers usually have a range of adress's so garmin just has the range not exact adress. it all counts as one mall or complex.

What cities comprise a ZIP code

Two comments about ZIP codes.

1. A ZIP code may span more than one municipality.
2. It's not at all unusual for a business's address to have as its city name, the name of the city where their post office is, not where the business is.

As an example (and I don't know whether this is true in the Gander Mtn case), perhaps the GM store really is in North Little Rock but the post office for the 72117 ZIP code is in Sherwood. If that's the case here, then the GPSr user would have to know to use North Little Rock as the city and not Sherwood when typing in the address.
And again if this supposition is true, it'd be nice for GM to list the actual cities in their store locator section instead of the cities of the ZIP codes if they're different.
