Charging nuvi 650

My nuvi 650 came with a DC adapter that plug's into the window mounting adapter. When the nuvi is installed on it the charging begins. The lighter adapter end of the plug broke and a dealer told me to plug a charging cord into the USB port on the side and it would charge that way. He even suggested that my phone adapter cord would work. I went to another store looking for one and was told that I shouldn't do that until I checked with Garmin.
Any advice with experience doing this would be appreciated.
Don't use your phone charger
Check with Garmin first. Why not just buy a new Garmin adapter? $20-$30.
Two Things
Garmin has had a problem with the car chargers falling apart and if that is what happened, I'd suggest requesting a replacement under warranty, regardless of when you bought it.
Did you not receive a USB cable with the unit? My 660 certainly came with one.
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Good questions!
I needed to use my nuvi tomorrow and was looking for a quick fix.
I received a USB cable with mine, but only with connections from nuvi to computer.
