My nuvi 200 is mounted on my dash and connected to 12v, and I rarely take it out. When I visit the Garmin site, I can find no information about any updates. It seems a bit odd that you can't find out IF there's an update without connecting the unit and running the updater
Is there info posted anywhere else?
Garmin 200W
If you check with the Garmin website periodically
you can check for updates to your specific unit. I
have found a couple there. Hope this helps
hmmm...I've poked around
hmmm...I've poked around there, but haven't seen it....got a link?

do you run the web updater it's a free download from garmin all you do is plug you gps into you computer thru the usb port and it will automaticly find updates for your gps hope this helps
.
The nuvi 2xx updated were taken off the Garmin website for some unknown reason shortly after the model was released.
The only real way to find out about updates is to run WebUpdater or check here.

I've run the updater. But that was exactly my point. Why do you HAVE to connect the unit and run the updater JUST to find out if there's any updates???
Oh well...just a sign of the times, I guess

Do we have an area where updates are posted? Or do they just sometimes show up in a thread? I searched before posting (pay attention newbies) but didn't find any info.
Basically, I'm having NO problems with my unit, and I'm NOT one who always wants the latest update. (I'm a SW developer, and I've let a bug or 2 slip out, and I know Garmin has done this, too) I'd just like to have a list of updates, with history about what they fix, and then I can decided when and what to apply.

09 update
For some reason, right when Garmin came out with the 09 map update, the nuvi line below 600 was removed from their update page. Since then, a couple models have reappeared and only say that the new update was to make the download of the retail maps compatible.
Try this, hook up your nuvi, run webupdater and after it finds you nuvi, the next screen will have a link that says: additional info "view webpage". Click the view webpage and save it and just check there in the future instead of having to use webupdater to find out.
I just ran my 350 and this is the webpage.

Unfortunately, not for the nuvi 200. For most models, the updates are listed on the update section of the product page and are also listed on the "What's New" page of the Garmin site.

Look on the right side of the page about one-third down. But again, this does not apply (for reasons known only to Garmin) to the nuvi 2xx.
Thanks, everyone. I was
Thanks, everyone. I was planning on giving Garmin a piece of my mind, but my wife says I don't have any extra to spare

How else would it know?
I've run the updater. But that was exactly my point. Why do you HAVE to connect the unit and run the updater JUST to find out if there's any updates???
How else would the updater be able to tell what firmware you currently have on your Nuvi? It has to see what you have, then it checks to see if what they have is a later version. If you want to just browse the Downloads section and make note of the versions they have, you could track it that way, I guess. It's just a lot faster and easier to use the WebUpdater.
missed the point

I'm not asking the updater to know what I have. I'm not wanting to run the updater at all, only to find out if there's NO update available
I'm very aware of the updater, and have used it, but the original request was to find out if there was a list available that would let me know WHEN I need to run the updater. Turns out there's not.
I wanted something with information like this page for my eTrex:

nuvi update pages!

Did you see my post above how to get to the update page in the future? You should only have to use the updater once.
yep

I'll give that a try. I noticed the URL had a product ID, and that should lead me to the right page. But I haven't found the ID for the 200 yet. Maybe I'll write a small program that will cycle through ID's and check the delivered HTML for my 200

WebUpdater is not easier for me

I know what version my nuvi350 has, I don't have to have WebUpdater know. It's a whole lot "faster and easier" just to check the download page than it is to connect my GPS to my computer and start WebUpdate just to check if a newer version is available.

which is EXACTLY why I wanted a download page for the 200. I've written a quick app to pump product ID's at the Garmin site, looking for the 200 page. I'll post it if I find it, and could use the app to find others, if necessary

dr5274... you are an adventurous one. Nothing wrong with writing a program to try out all the IDs, but you could have just looked at the Garmin\GarminDevice.xml on your GPS for the ID.
My Nuvi350 has:

< SoftwareVersion >500< /SoftwareVersion >
< Description>nuvi< /Description >
< /Model >
< Id > 3311502675< /Id >

I also agree with dr5274 and RT. It's a little disturbing that I can download the latest firmware (from 2001) for my 12 year old Garmin GPS III , but for my wife's brand new Nuvi 260 the firmware is no where to be found requiring WebUpdater. Argh.

I'm stubborn, too :)

By ID, I mean the last identifier in this URL:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1675
So, 1675 is the ID for the 350 when requesting download details. 25 is the ID for my eTrex. My test app pulled content for ID's 0000 thru 3000, and I didn't find a page for the 200 anywhere in there. Wonder if they might have referred to it as 2xx??? Maybe I'll have to expand my search criteria.

Garmin Updates & Downloads
Have you looked at this page?

It lists the latest updates for Garmin's current products.

Ah I see. The web id has nothing to do with the GPS hardware id... my bad.
I find this upsetting also since with you I have no idea when new firmware is available for my Nuvi 260 unless I run Web Updater on a regular basis. I'll call Garmin tomorrow and politetly ask why my old GPSr discontinued over 5 years ago still has the latest firmware posted AND no Nuvi 260 firmware updates?
Garmin used to really value their customers. Last year they replaced my GPS III (10 year) litihum battery and gave me a new case/antenna all for free! Seems now they have gone big time so that may no longer be the case.

No Garmin Nuvi 2XX to be found on that page! That's why I'm upset. My GPS III from January 31, 2000 is there.
