Current speed on the map page of the nuvi 760

I had a TomTom GO920 which allowed me to put the current speed (and other items) on the map page, which I really liked. I cannot figure out if this can be done on the nuvi 760. Can anyone help and let me know if the map page can be customized to include the current speed? I do not like having to go to another screen to see my speed. Thanks!

Unless you have specified a destination and selected "GO" in which case the display changes to the arrival time. Then, you have to go to the Trip page to see your speed.

Yes. That is one important

Yes. That is one important point I forgot to mention. Thanks

Customization

In answer to your original question, to my knowledge, it is not possible to customize the screen to display speed when a destination is set. It will show the estimated arrival time.

Haven't found a way to do

Haven't found a way to do that yet,
It seems odd that items we use are delegated to another screen when a route is selected and we have to specifically select that screen to view?

Yeah, I wish that they would

Yeah, I wish that they would allow you to put what you consider important info on the main screen.

I agree. A friend and I

I agree. A friend and I both have 680's and being able to customize the screen to have the speed is something we'd both like to see.

I Hope It Comes Back

My 2620 has the ability to add transparent tabs to the display. They can be customized to display the info you wanted and you can touch them to toggle them on or off.

I had a discussion with Garmin about these but got no promise that they would be back. I liked the feature, but have been able to manage without them.

Thanks for all of your

Thanks for all of your input. I would really prefer customization on the speed, as I am more concerned about that at all times than the ETA. Perhaps it will be possible in the future with a firmware upgrade.

Answered my question

I had the same desire with my 760. Took my first significant trip with the device yesterday and wanted to see the current speed displayed on the map along a multi-point route.

I'll check the FAQ's, but is there a recommended way to get wish list items on Garmin's radar for updates/future products? The device is meeting my expectations, but there are many additional features that would take the product to another level.

Thanks...

Why do you need two?

Last time I looked every car had a speedometer included in the basic price. why would anyone need to have it also on the GPS unit at the same time? Unless your speedometer is broken.

US Federal regulations

US Federal regulations require that all motor vehicles which can be driven on a highway be equipped with speedometers!

Garmin does not have a history of upgrading their old GPSrs with new features or allow customization of the main display. Everytime they put out a model with new features. You'll have to buy a new one. This one of the many areas Garmin needed to change.

Keep in mind customizable

Keep in mind customizable status screens are not a new feature. My Garmin GPS III from '97 allows the user to change to view the speed, altitude, voltage or any other status screen. This has been a big gripe with the Nuvi line from day one since my 11 year old Garmin GPS had this feature. At least the 7XX and 8XX have a track log unlike the older Nuvis (2XX,3XX,6XX)

It is nice to thave the speeed displayed on the GPS so that you do not have to look away from the road to see your speed.

I always set my cruise control from the GPS rather than the speedometer because of accuracy and ability to see it easier while driving.

There's never one around when you need one

It's nice to have a backup - some streets have the posted signs few and far between.

Warning to all, though. I have already seen a couple of mistakes on the Nuvi screen. Just like map data, there is the occasional error. Best bet is to use the onscreen as a guide, then verify by watching for a real sign.

Current Speed

My biggest complaint with my nuvi 780 is that the current speed is not displayed when following a route. I think at a minimum, Garmin should allow this as an option to display either the arrival time or current speed.

Well I was surprised to see an ad yesterday for the nuvi 205W and it looks like Garmin made a few interface adjustments so the current speed AND the arrival time are now displayed while following a route.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/alt-image.do?pID=13432&img=produ...

So I wonder what the chances are that this interface change will be available as an update for the 7xx series? Probably slim to none I guess. I do know I'd actually pay for a software upgrade if it gave me new features like this. Asking me to buy a new unit is kind of a stretch.

Current Speed & Speed Limit Indication

All nice to have features. One more to add - I would like to see an option that builds more functionality into the speed indicator. A nice to have would be to update the firmware to give the user the option of enabling a speed alarm when the posted speed is exceeded. The interface can allow the user to enable/disable the option, set the "exceed speed limit" (0, 2, 5, 10), and select an audible, visual or both alert. The box or the number can be displayed as red and an audible alert will note when the exceed speed limit set point is exceeded.

I agree that would be nice. I mentioned in a different post that having the speed limit and current speed displayed has actually changed my driving habits somewhat. I'm much more cautious of my speed now and your suggestion would help even more.

User selectable fields

My 76CSx has had selectable user info fields forever. I can choose how many fields (to a point) are on the screen and what info is in those screens. I was a bit surprised when I got my nüvi to find out that wasn't possible on the unit.

I use mine instead of the speedometer on the way to work and home. I don't need routing info for that drive so I see the speed limit as well as the speed on the screen. I use it to set my cruise control and to keep track of my heavy foot when not using the cruise control. It's very handy.

I'd LOVE to see both the ETA and the actual speed on the screen while routing. I'd also like to be able to see the actual current time on that screen as well. It seems this could be handled with a unit update but I'm not going to hold my breath for it. For the most part I'm pretty darn happy with my 760.

GPS and my speedometer do not match

My nuvi 760 displays a consistently slower speed than my vehicles' speedometers. Both vehicles are 2008 models from Toyota (3 months old) and Audi (6 months old), so my guess is that it's the GPS that is off.

So I can't rely on that number. But I didn't buy the GPS for its speedometer (i.e. I didn't even know it had one!), so I couldn't care less. I'd much rather see elevation on the main page.

We've had extensive discussions about the accuracy of GPSr vs Speedometers...you might search the forum, and enjoy the read.

ps: the GPSr is closer to correct than your car(s)...

Thanks...

...but I wasn't really interested in the function, and my post about the speedometer wasn't a question, so didn't bother to do a search.

But now that you've mentioned it, I do have a few minutes to kill, and so off I will go meander about in the forums...

Elevation?

I have a pretty smooth riding car. I like to watch the elevation as I drive to be sure all 4 wheels are firmly on the ground. It's hard to tell sometimes if I'm floating or not.

If you lose air in your tires, the car rides lower. Watching the elevation would alert me to put more air in the tires, too.

OK - sorry - that just caught my funny bone and it's been a long day. I remember taking a scenic driving trip through the mountains in north Arkansas with a laptop GPS system. And it showed elevation on the main screen. It was a twisty road with lots of ups and downs. It was sort of interesting to watch the constant changes in elevation as we went through switchback after switchback.

Check the satellite screen

You can only view that from the satellite screen. Press and hold the signal strength bars for a few seconds to view that screen.

Thanks
