Setting a POI " Alarm "

I would like to set my Garmin c340 to " Alert "
at a certain place every time I get at least 1800
feet near it. It would be nice to have the red bar
at the top just like a Speed Zone or Redlight Cam.
Is there a way I can do this....

Thanks

Setting Proximity Alarm

You can do it by creating or modifying a POI in a .csv file. See FAQ located at : http://www.poi-factory.com/garmin-csv-file-format

If you are loading a POI, you can set a proximity alarm within POI Loader. For the beta version, you would load it in the manual mode.

Humm......

Humm......
I don't see anything that states you can add
a generic alert. I do how ever see that you can
name a file Speed or Relight and an alert
will popup with either " Speed " or " Redlight "
in the red display. I have a few of these already.

What I would really like to do is have it display
" Check Point " .

I did go through the " Manual " mode while loading and I think
I may have gotten it to do what I wanted and that is alert at 4000 ft.

I do have a question though. I noticed My Redlight and Speed poi's already had the Box checked for me. On my Speed POI you can only put the green circle in one of the two Alert boxes. The one that is lit up is " Alert when speed is greater than the alert speed ". It has 0 in the box, is that correct? I have it marked as 35 in my poi. Just want to make sure that I'm not messing anything up by doing this manually. Before it would go off if I was doing greater than the speed limit. Would like to keep it that way.

If I leave the Speed and Redlight at their defaults will they be unchanged?

Thanks

RE: Humm....

Yes, you are doing it correctly. Some files, depending upon text in the name, will default to the speed designated. However, in your case, you can set any speed you want in the manual mode. It doesn't have any negative effect. The next time you go to load the file into your GPS through POI loader, you will have the same choices with the original default.

Remember, each time you load your POI's with POI loader, you remove the ones you previously loaded.

Yes, this is true.

Yes, this is true. For that very reason I have set up a Folder named POI which I keep all my poi's in. I've heard that the new poi loader will let you load and delete poi's individually but I haven't tried it yet.

So, As stated earlier if I leave the Alert when speed is greater than the alert Speed Value at 0 will it still Alert me when I drive over the posted speed.
In that particular poi I have SpeedTrap@35 in the 3rd column.

Not sure, but

I have not tested it, however I refer you to another discussion at : http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1167. One member says that individual alerts (i.e. column 3) take precedence.

Figured Out How

I figured out a way to do what I was asking and wanted to post to help others that wanted to do the same.

This will Alert within the given distance that you tell it and display the Red Alert bar at the top of the screen. Also the Red Bar will Read Alert: followed by what ever you have typed in your 3rd line ( Name line ).

1. You make your poi using your preferred program.
I like Excel so I created mine with it.

2. Open up POI loader and choose " Manual "
This will allow you to set your POI Alerts
individually. There will be a check box where
you can choose if you want that POI to notify
you of an Alert.

3. Check the Box of the poi that you want to Alert
you and then put the little green dot in the
" Alert Whenever you get close to a Point "
option. Fill in the Distance that you want Hit
the OK button and your all set.

I tried this and the final

I tried this and the final outcome was only the files with proximity alerts displayed in my custom poi's and the others that I chose not to add proximity alerts to were deleted from the custom poi view on my GPS.

Another thing I don't like is the address info on the GPS becomes scattered as there is now the proximity info showing on the screen as well so the address just runs off the viewing screen.

Loading POIs

When you load files with POI Loader, you need to load all of the files that you want to have on your GPS. Each time you load, you are creating a new file which replaces the old files. Therefore, you need to point to a folder on your PC which contains all of the .csv and .gpx files you want to load. In manual mode, you will go through each file and independtly add proximity alerts or not add them.

I do have a folder where all

I do have a folder where all the Poi's are stored so that when I start POi Loader it grabs all of them everytime. I wanted to add proximity alerts to 2 of the 5 files in that folder and when I did that in manual mode, those were the only 2 Poi files that appeared on my garmin so I ended up having to go back to express mode and reload my files again so now I am back to no alerts unless I am to leave it at 0 for all.

Strange

Did you see each file name come up in manual mode? You do have the option to skip files. Might want to check again.

You are absolutely right. I

You are absolutely right. I had the option to skip files and that is just what I did and the skipped files are the ones that did not display in my custom poi menu after POI Loader completed the upload.

Ok, I went back in and did not select to ignore file. I thought that if I did not want to put a proximity on a file I had to press ignore. My bad.

But any advice now on how the addresses can stay on the Garmin screen after setting alerts or that can't happen?
