2009 map update fails

I downloaded 2009 map update. I made 4 attempts to run the installation program on computer #1 and about one quarter done the program locks up the computer. I then used another computer. When I run the install program I get 4 choices...#1 install Canada, #2 install lower 48, #3 west, and #4 east. What does this mean? I then chose selection #2… lower 48. When finished I get the message “map installed to gps successful, installation to computer failed with errors”. Why ?

When I check the Nuvi map info it indicates “city navigator North America nt2009 - 1 (check box) city navigator lower 48 states nt2009. Is this the right map? What about Canada? What is the east/west choice? What computer program failed to install?

On the original computer #1, I now have an icon on my desktop named mapinstall. What is this? Is this related to mapsource (which I have installed for my other garmin units). When I click this program, it finds my nuvi. I tried to install some maps, but there is only room for one or two states to install on the nuvi out of the entire county. What is this? This icon is not on computer #2. Is this the failed to install program.

I have tried several times to re-install the program and run it on computer #2. It installed the same city navigator program and gave the same failure error messages both times.

I am very frustrated. Please help!

mine worked on the third

mine worked on the third try, i dont remember but it wasnt working at first, but then finally it did

Clear off some space

You might need to clean off some non-essential files on the nuvi. Sounds like your running into space issues. Delete the speech files you don't use/need and any vehicle files you are not using. Then try the update again on PC #1

The mapinstall program is there so that you can add additional maps to your unit.

I don't see what streetpilot you have, but some don't have enough space for the entire update. If yours is supposed to, then the same suggestions should work for that, also.

What unit are you installing to?

Mine worked flawlessly for the 760 - It downloaded and installed in less than 3 hours. From the choices above, it sounds like you are loading it to a device that does not have an internal map installation like the - c3xx, c5xx, nuvi series, zumo series have. The map update is for these units. For devices that require downloads from Mapsource you need the non-update version of CNNT. If you paid $50 to $60 you have the unit update version, if you paid $120 to $140 it is the non update version for Mapsource.

Here is a thought, the computers you are using might be tight on Hard drive space, the install uses 2 Gigabytes of storage, anything less will cause the failure. you should have received OS low memory warnings for that part of the installation, and still un-affect the Garmin software
You might want to check into that.

Thanks for the help so

Thanks for the help so far:

This 2009 map upgrade/update is free from Garmin as my unit was elliglbe for the free update, being 3 months old.

The update is being installed on a Nuvi650. I have mapsource/metroguide installed for my streetpilot model #1 (the black and white screen one) which is several years old, but still works fine actually. I only mentioned the mapsource being installed in case there could be any conflict somehow with the upgrade (don't know how/why)?

I spent 45 min on-hold with garmin yesterday waiting for a tech, then when one answered I was told " don't know why its doing that...should not do that...try again....never heard that problem before"..........

Both computers have plenty of HD space, no problem there.

Tried to install again last night with exact same results and error message.

I will try install again today with eliminating the voice files which I never use anyway. I have no POI's, jpg's, or anything else stored on the garmin internal memory (it's on the SD card)that should be using space internally to prevent the FULL map install. I seem to only get or be offered the "lower 48".

map update

These Nuvi units come preloaded with many different languages that do take up quite a bit of space, to be able to properly load the update, we are going to need to delete some unused files from the unit which you can do by following the instructions below.

1. Plug your unit into the computer via a standard mini usb to usb
cable
2. Open your my computer
3. Open the Garmin Drive
4. Open the Garmin folder
5. Open one of the following folders: Text / Help / Voice / JPEG /
Vehicles
6. Delete any unused languages ( be sure to keep your preferred
language) or pictures /vehicles if you have any loaded
7. Return to the Garmin folder
8. Repeat steps 5-7 in the other folders listed
9. Empty your trash/recycle bin on your computer

This will give your unit enough space to properly load the map update for your unit. From here, run the rmu_cnnant2009.exe file that you have downloaded.

Please note: The mapping update must be loaded to the units internal memory, so adding memory through an SD card will not open up any space for the update to be loaded.

For Safety - BACK UP FILES

Just to play it safe you should TOTALLY back up the folders/files on your unit BEFORE you delete anything. One little slip and your unit will be toast.

It's just good practice to do the backup first. I did it before deleting my unused voice files, the sample audio book, etc. and it was easy to do. That way you will be sure that you can put the unit back the way it was originally.

I don't understand the "lower 48" thing unless it is just a space issue. I know the update IS larger than the original map set so hopefully once you delete unwanted stuff you will get the option to install the whole thing.

YooHooooooooo

YooHooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SUCCESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I copied all the voice and vehicle files (but 1 or 2) to a directory on computer #1.

The install then went flawlessly and took a little over an hour. No error messages.

When I check the map info on the Nuvi,it now says city navigator map 2009...ALL
(the lower 48 message is gone).

I guess there was not room to install the whole update with all those voice and vehicle files on the unit, hence the install giving me the message to choose between canada, lower 48, east, and west, to install.

I will do a little more testing this weekend keeping my fingers crossed.

MANY THANKS to all for the help in solving my problem.

2009 Update.

I just updated mine today and it went smooth. But it takes a long time to load it. I think it took about 1 1/2 hours or more. Got my update free as i bought my unit in April.

Nuvi-680

3 tries and many hours, but finally worked!

First two tries failed, even thought the download seemed to have fully downloaded, when attempting to run it would tell me that the "file was corrupt", a bit frustrating, but the 3rd try, and 4 or 5 more hours latter, it finally worked.

What I think might have happened with at least one of the failed attempts, is that the full size of the file seems to be allocated upfront, so if it fails somewhere in the middle, then you can't tells it is incomplete, because the eof shows the whole size.

The second download is more of a mystery, because I downloaded with the browser download manager (instead of Garmin's), and it seemed to have completed ok, yet the file was corrupt.
