760 Lag time

Hi, still getting to know my Nuvi 760.
Since I've had my Nuvi, I have noticed a slight lag in the refresh rate or redraw rate. Alot of people were stating that their GPS usually refreshes about once per second and noticed mine was a little longer, maybe 1.5 to almost 2 seconds per redraw. Also, it seemed that many of the intersections I was driving through, the GPS was sometimes slightly behind my actual position. Something that never happened with my last Nuvi 650.
Today while leaving from work, I began to notice, immediately, that my refresh rate was much speedier, something like every half to 1 second. It also seemed to have a more accurate lock on my position. I'm not complaining (very happy). I updated my Nuvi when I first purchased it but nothing since. I hope this improvement sticks because it was getting a little annoying. I guess I'm just wondering why I would experience such an improvement from one day to the next.

That happened to me with my c530 and I returned it. Never has happened again with the 350. If you haven't reset it, might want to try that.

That you should let your new gps acquire satellites for 20 minutes and then it will start faster and be more accurate afterwards...
I have never done it but that might explain the change...

No return
I'm just hoping that the speedier refresh rate will remain.
Guess I'll see over the next few days. It's was a bit of a relief to know that that wasn't the norm and that it could be faster.
When she speaks
Aside from the periodic annoy lag, also noticing that when the 760 is speaking directions that the car icon stops moving whether i'm doing 50 or 100 km/h. It then resumes after she's done speaking. it will not refresh for approx. 3 to 4 seconds while this happens. Is this normal?
Starting to think I'm getting a little picky. Would like to know what your 760 does.
Nuvi Lag
The lag when the Nuvi is speaking appears to be normal. The processor seems to give precedence to the voice over screen refresh. I also had an excessive lag of several seconds at other times with my 750 (after firmware updates) and resetting the GPS and giving it a clear view of the sky for at least 20 minutes solved that problem for me.

Thanks
I'll give that a try. I'm guessing Reset first then clear view of sky.
Did some research on other sites and it appears we are not alone. According to one post, Garmin seems to be aware of the issue and will hopefully come up with a solution soon.
Hopefully your solution will work first. Guess now I have to look up how to do a reset.
Thanks again

I'm just getting to know my 760 too. I hadn't noticed the lag rate before, but I do now.
Really liking it so far.
Was it always
Was it always there or did it happen after an update? I have yet to do the reset. Will be trying tomorrow.
Another question, What is the difference between a hard reset and a cold reset?
And would this compromise my newly loaded 2009 maps?

The solution will be to buy the newest and latest and greatest Garmin on the market!!! lol
nothing but the best
Thought that's what I did. Oh well, what's the next greatest Garmin?
Firmware Problem
I'm having the same problem with my 750. This is what I got from Garmin.
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
I apologize that you are having a redraw issue after updating your maps.
Unfortunately, there is not yet a fix for this issue. A firmware update should be released soon that you can download using the Web Updater.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Weather conditions and solar activity also play a role in this. Thick clouds and storms and increased electromagnetic solar activity in the area can impact the reception of the satellite signal.

Lag
Well, I obviously found the problem with my 760. When I removed my SD card, the lag time seems to be cut in half. Way faster. When I reinsert it, it slows way down. I used a 2 GB panasonic Class 6 pro high speed card. (probably made for cameras.)
I've heard that the unit should have no problem handling the 2GB SD card, but would it be because it is a class 6? (Obviously wasted my money) Wondering would the regular SD card have the same effect on my GPS as my current one?
Makes no difference
I've switched out my 2 gig Sd card and put in an old 256mb card and loaded it with all the same custom poi as the 2.
Does not seem to make a bit of difference in the slow refresh rate. Read somewhere that any alerts can also cause the unit to slow. The only alerts I have are speed traps and camera lights. Could that make all the difference with the refresh rate? Guess i'll test it tomorrow.

I don't know how many POIs you have, but I personally store mine on the nuvi and use my 8gb SDHC card for my MP3 files. To free up nuvi drive space, I backed up all of the nuvi files onto a DVD data disk and deleted all of the foreign voice files, demo audio-book and pic files. This gave me back ~360MB of internal nuvi memory. You may see better performance with read speeds from the internal memory vs the removable SDHC memory.
BTW: the SDHC card class is the card's max data write speed. class 2/4/6 = Mb/sec (respectively)

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I have only about 9 or 10 POI files on there right now. not alot. I guess I'll dump them in the Nuvi. Have you heard about the alerts in the POI files causing anyone grief?
Alert causing problems
Have you heard about the alerts in the POI files causing anyone grief?
Not really but I suppose it would be a problem to have alerts say, for Starbucks, and be traveling down Michigan Ave in downtown Chicago. A Starbucks in every other tall building would probably cause a headache.
The only problem I have heard about is what and how many alerts you have set. TOOOOOOOO many may cause headaches.

I have a Microcenter generic 2GB SD card in my 760, and I put all the custom POI's on the card, as well as jpg's, mp3's and audio books. I do not see any lag time. You might want to speak with, and/or send the unit to Garmin if it's still in warranty.

No lag
I have a 2GB card and I have my speed camera/red light camera database (with alerts) and the rest area database (with alerts) on the card along with mp3 music files and an mp3 audio book and around 100 geocaches (with alerts) near my office. The card is pretty much stuffed full. I haven't noticed any issues with lag.

Obviously something wrong with whatever reads my cards, because it makes no difference whether it's a 2 gig or a 256 mb card.

Having the same lag problem, though I don't use a card. I will try the reset and post the result.
i have over 20 custom POI's
i have over 20 custom POI's on a 2 GB sandisk SD card. and music, and pictures. I notice that with the SD card installed all custome POI's show on the map, which then appears to slow down the map refresh rate, if i take the card out it fixs instantly.
The only alerts i have is red lights.
Also i noticed before i had custome icons for the POI'S, I since removed the icons, but havent tested if that will have any affect. I do not use any custom sounds for POI's. I have a 760
Isn't Garmin aware of this?

Weather? No SunSpots Yes!
Weather conditions and solar activity also play a role in this. Thick clouds and storms and increased electromagnetic solar activity in the area can impact the reception of the satellite signal.
GPS Error Sources
There are many sources of possible errors that will degrade the accuracy of positions computed by a GPS receiver. The travel time of GPS satellite signals can be altered by atmospheric effects; when a GPS signal passes through the ionosphere and troposphere it is refracted, causing the speed of the signal to be different from the speed of a GPS signal in space. Sunspot activity also causes interference with GPS signals. Another source of error is measurement noise, or distortion of the signal caused by electrical interference or errors inherent in the GPS receiver itself. Errors in the ephemeris data (the information about satellite orbits) will also cause errors in computed positions, because the satellites weren't really where the GPS receiver "thought" they were (based on the information it received) when it computed the positions. Small variations in the atomic clocks (clock drift) on board the satellites can translate to large position errors; a clock error of 1 nanosecond translates to 1 foot or 0.3 meters user error on the ground.

760 Lag
The lag when the Nuvi is speaking appears to be normal. The processor seems to give precedence to the voice over screen refresh. I also had an excessive lag of several seconds at other times with my 750 (after firmware updates) and resetting the GPS and giving it a clear view of the sky for at least 20 minutes solved that problem for me.
I noticed the same issue with my Nuvi 760 so I played around with the voice settings. Apparently some voice files are more processor-intensive than others. I noticed this when I switched the voice setting from "American English Jill (TTS)" to "American English". No more lag when the gps spoke but the "American Englist" voice lacked a great deal of detailed navigating instructions as well as street names. I just updated my Nuvi 760 to the newest unit software, 4.60, hoping that this would resolve the issue but the software upgrade doesn't fix this issue. I used to own a Nuvi 260W that didn't experience this issue, maybe the voice file on it is newer or different somehow. Would anybody know if the voice files on the 260W are better, newer or the same and if they would work in a Nuvi 760?
